Yes, wonderful video. I started in 1973 as a fireman, and this locomotive was there. All the 25 NC locomotives started from 3401 upto 3422. The driver who worked this 3422 regularly was Hannes Greef, a big guy, wonderful guy. Engin I fired was 3417 with driver Flip Marx, wonderful days. Hard work but worth it.

I used to see 3422 on the Trans Karoo in later years, and 3417 in the Cape as an oil burner before she threw a rod.

How can I not watch steam train videos? They are magnificent machines that I loved since kid. I used to live by a railway station and each day after school I used to go and visit steam trains and drivers, often bringing a wheel barrow of fruits, potatoes and grapes from our 3 farms. I miss this era.

The pacing scenes remind me of 50 years ago following Canadian National Railways 4-8-4 # 6218 through the Province of Quebec. The 25NC is an equally beautiful piece of machinery. Thank you so much for sharing steamfreak!!!

The Class 25 is my favourite SA loco, but I'm more in love with the condensers which I grew up with. Somebody please save the lone one standing at Beaconsfield (if it is still there).
@steamfreak6 жыл бұрын
Thanks. The 25 at Beaconsfield is under the care of Steamnet 2000. The one at Millsite has been moved to Germiston for safekeeping. Hopefully will see one of these beasts running again!

Excellent photography. This steam engine has set of 4 drive wheels having diameter more than 1.5m. What will be its maximum speed?.Thanks.
@steamfreak7 жыл бұрын
+Vishwajit Pawar they were limited to 90km/h in regular service, but were known to reach 120km/h at times.

In continuation,this seems to be using oil as fuel. What will be maximum speed for coal user steam engine?
@steamfreak7 жыл бұрын
+Vishwajit Pawar yes it's an oil burner. The coal burning versions had the same top speed. They had a mechanical stoker so that enough coal could be delivered even at high speed.

They are truly great locomotives but oh, that smoke! He is running much too rich.
@steamfreak2 жыл бұрын
Yeah could wind back the atomiser a notch or two...
@chadleighdebruyn7673Ай бұрын
It’s an oil burner , smoke will look darker than coal engine . The fact that the fireman had that boiler on the red make without blowing off shows he was firing just right

Oh...I miss the old coal trains......nothing quite like it..
