I was stationed in Germany in the late 80s. Spent time on OP 9 in Grafenwoer. Every day at 1600 hours the A10s had the impact area. Boy, those guys smoked targets. Learned how to call close air support back then. 90 and 91 I found my happy ass in Desert Shield and Desert Storm. I called A10s and it saved our lives.

@alexanderdgray
@alexanderdgray 4 ай бұрын
@@tvdroid22 Close Air Support is aerial warfare actions against hostile targets in close proximity to friendly forces. The USAF says the A-10 should only be deployed in uncontested airspace-and in a world where you never know if someone is going to pop up with a shoulder-launched SAM, that situation is never assured. Using the A-10 just to use the gun is kind of the worst of all worlds-expose a pilot and airframe so they can use a weapon where they have to get within 1km or less of the target, to fire a gun that has a rather broad splash zone, increasing the chance of friendly fire and civilian casualties. The modern choice is to use laser guided or other precision munitions that can be fired from a variety of aircraft from much further away, achieving the CAS mission with far less risk to pilots, friendlies, and civilians. To say nothing of drone warfare which makes all of this even more obsolete-javelin missiles for anti tank warfare or even Ukraine-style FPS drones for 1/10th cost. I know the A-10 has fanboys. But it is no longer worth supporting and maintaining a platform that gets more obsolete with each passing year when we could be investing in newer tech. And the gun? Fun fact-from day one, it was never a tank killer. Tests back in the 70s on stationary Soviet tanks (t-64s I think) showed even when they scored hits, the rounds penetrated the armor only about 10% of the time, when shooting from behind. It’s a fascinating plane, but its retirement is long overdue.

Cool fact, the A-10 is the only aircraft designed after the primary weapon system. Meaning, they took the GAU-8A 30mm gattling cannon, and basically said, "ok, now make this fly", so they designed the plane around using that specific gun, as the primary weapon system. Normal procedure is design the plane, then design, weapon systems, to accommodate the overall design and intended function of said aircraft.

When I was younger, I was a USAF TACP. My job was controlling close air support (CAS) for ground troops. On one exercise I found out that that day was the company commander's birthday, so I decided to give him a present while we was practicing coordination of fire on the firing/bomb range. When it came time for the CAS, I was lucky enough to have a flight of A-10's. I asked the flight lead if he was ok with a high threat scenario. He said sure. I hooked up with the company commander and told him we would be working together to designate targets. When he asked what we had, I told thait it was a surprise. I gave him a smoke grenade and told him that at my signal, pull the pin, throw it out there as far as he could and tell me the color. No sooner had he thrown it, the A-10s was doing pop-ups and rolling in on the initial targets . The captain spent the entire time designating targets and thoroughly enjoyed ths sound of the guns. When the lead told me they could do one last pass, I gave the headset to thecommander and told him he could talk to the planes and give him the final "cleared hot." Once thay were finished, I askedthe flight lead for and got a "door check," where the plane flies past our location fast, low and louud. Once the sortie was over, I turned to the captain, and with a big grin, said, HAPPY BIRTHDAY. The commander said it was the best present he had ever received.

The magazine can hold 1,350 rounds of ammunition. The pilot can select a firing rate of either 2,100 or 4,200 rounds a minute. The"funky shape" is why we call them the Warthog! They only travel at 420 miles per hour.

I have always loved the Hog, and even built a model of one back in the late 70s. The GAU-8A cannon, with magazine, is longer than a 60s VW Beetle, and actually slows the plane down when firing. When you watch the reload clip, you may think it's a carosel, and you're right - if memory serves, the spent shell casings are stored in the plane instead of being ejected - that's a lot of brass. The A-10 was built to be basic. It's cockpit was more reminiscent of it's predecessor (Thunderbolt - an excellent ground attack fighter in WWII) than the F-15 or (originally export-focused) F-16, and had little in terms of sensors for ground attack (FLIR, active radar). Instead its original main stand-off missile was the Maverick, which was a TV-guided missile (not ideal if you're in dangerous territory). But it can carry a LOT - I think payload is 16,000 lbs, which is double what WWII B-17s could carry. The engines were turbofans that were commercially available. All of this was for cost control and focus on the gun. The only area where the USAF "splurged" aside from the gun was redundancy and pilot safety - the plane has multiple cable-linked redundant controls and the pilot sits in the proverbial titanium bathtub, which no other US ground attack aircraft that I know of has. Most A-10s now are operated by state Air National Guards, but obviously have been called up for active duty too often since the end of the Cold War. And sorry to burst your bubble - or confirm you are not gay - but some Hog drivers in Desert Storm were ladies - I think there's a video out there about one such pilot who nursed her Hog back after suffering massive triple-A damage. Lastly, it was mentioned that the A-10 has been threatened to be made redundant for years. This was USAF bureaucracy-driven (they like fast, sparkly things), but Congress (especially those members from military/infantry heavy states like SC, NC, VA, CA, TX) have repeatedly called gnerals to the carpet, seemingly often enough that they have got the message: ground-pounders adore the planes and their pilots. Every Army infantryman or Marine grunt I have talked to who had experience in Iraq or Afghanistan seemed ready to form a line to buy these pilots beers all night long - they absolutely loved to hear Hogs were inbound. My dad served in Vietnam (1/7 Cavalry, Garryowen) inclding Ia Drang, and his analogue was the A-1 Skyraider - he absolutely loved "those amazing bastards!"

The A-10's ammunition drum can hold up to 1,350 rounds of 30mm ammunition. In practice, the A-10 typically carries around 1,174 rounds. This leaves some room in the drum and makes the aircraft less heavy. Key Points : GAU-8 Avenger Cannon: The A-10's primary weapon is the GAU-8 Avenger, a massive 30mm Gatling-style cannon. Armor-Piercing: The cannon fires a mix of armor-piercing incendiary (API) and high-explosive incendiary (HEI) rounds designed to defeat tanks and other armored vehicles. Firing Rate: The GAU-8 has a blistering rate of fire of 3,900 rounds per minute. they say that it is the only aircraft built around a gun. Each design aspect has one job, to add to the hog's ability to carry, feed, and fire that cannon,.

The evolution of the airplane's use in wars is very interesting. They started out as a way to see what the enemy was up to. Then someone came up with the idea to carry things to drop on the enemy. Then hand held guns. They then mounted guns (which were sometimes more dangerous to the plane than the enemy) It just kept evolving from that point on.

In Dessert storm at the beginning of the 90s, the Iraqi forces started a bunch o foil fires. This was to keep all the allied planes from hitting their middle stations. The only aircraft that could attack thru all the smoke was the A10. It would fly in and let the middle radars lock on to the aircraft. That would show the A10 where the missle batteries were. And they would shot the ground forces before they could shot back.

1200 rounds for the 30 mil cannon with a total of 18 seconds of continuous firepower. A 1 to 2 well aimed burst will destroy nearly all tanks.

Actually, there is talk of building new airframes of the A-10, but with newer materials like carbon fiber, and 21st century technology like advanced computers, but the 1 thing that the new ones IF BUILT, will retain, is that 30mm cannon in the front, but might get more rounds for it, if enough space can be made for a larger ammo drum. The design is so good, and the mission that it was created for is so crucial, that no other platform can even come close enough to it's performance to even consider letting it take over the mission and retiring the A-10. not to mention fitting that huge 30mm in another airframe smaller than a cargo plane is a difficult enough task, but it's presence over the battlefield has a value that is impossible to measure. and yes that information is available, the 30mm GAU avenger cannon in the A-10, hold 1,174 rounds at full capacity which is about 15.6 seconds worth of firing capacity, but considering how much damage each one of them can do, (DEPENDING ON THE TYPE OF AMMO LOADED) 15.6 seconds can do an awful lot, seeing as how there is practice ammo, (just a normal bullet) then there is high explosive bullets, (hollow and filled with an explosive compound) which basically hits and explodes, blowing stuff up, then incendiary rounds, hits and sets things on fire, steel core armor piercing, I think is self explanatory, and then the one that tanks really hate, the DU rounds, (Depleted Uranium rounds) which slice through tank armor like a hot knife through butter.

The A-10 is the best CAS (close air support) ever to fly. Said from experience.

Unfortunately they have started retiring some A-10s. I saw an article that the squadron at Davis Monthan AFB in Arizona just retired their first batch.😢

I live in Maryland, USA. The Maryland Air National Guard has a squadron based in Chase, MD which is east of Baltimore. We can see them flying occasionally during their training flights. Don't get to hear the awesome 30mm cannon but it's still cool to see them flying overhead!!

You wouldn't have to worry when loading the ammunition for a gun on the Warthog or any other plane featuring some sort of cannon. They're not going to fire at random or whatever.

The GAU30 fires so fast that fully loaded, the A10 carries about 15 seconds worth of ammo.

I imagine the pilot would need to use it very sparingly if he only has 15 seconds

The A10 holds about 10 seconds of fire. About 1600 rounds on board

Most USA ground troops make sure A10 flyers never buy food or drinks when they meet. A friend who drove Army vehicles said he lost count of how many times they got bailed out by Warthogs.

1174 max capacity. Remember they only fire short burst about 200 rounds at a time.

It looks like more ammo because of the two belts. One belt loads new ammo the other unloads expended shells.

The A-10 Warthog has an Ammo capacity of 1,350 round. But they usually only load it up with about 1,174 so it has some space to feed into the gun better. Yes this is acurate. I asked my best friend. He was a marine engineer who worked on alot of different planes. The A-10 being on he fix once or twice. They're pretty hardy but they can still get damaged or pieces just get old.

The gun's 5-foot, 11.5-inch (1.816 m) ammunition drum can hold up to 1,350 rounds of 30 mm ammunition, but generally holds 1,174 rounds.
