Think of it this way, our framers wrote our Constitution so that members of our government can be replaced as we choose. For that matter our whole government and it's structure can be removed and changed (although not easily). But what they were very keenly aware of is that while we might readily want to change those whom we elected, it would very likely never be the case that we ever decided to "scrap" the whole thing and start over! 👍💪🎆❤️🇺🇸

The remains of that very flag is in the care of the Smithsonian in Washington D.C. where it is on display under glass. Now you know why we're so proud of our flag - it stands not just for freedom, but the lives of those who have died through the years protecting the U.S. and her people. This is why we stand for the flag and refuse to bow to anyone but God...

Actually that isn’t the storm flag that was flown and shelled that night. Nobody knows what happened to it. The flag in the Smithsonian is the garrison flag that was raised over Fort McHenry that morning. Unfortunately Paul Harvey messed that part up when he said Fort Henry. The fort is in Baltimore MD on the harbor.

According to Brittanica, there were 28 deaths, 250 injured, and 50 captured americans. There were over 1000 troops inside the fort, amongst the large population of civilians taking refuge from the nearby city. Something like 1800 shells and 800 rockets were fired at the fort for 25 hours. 19 ships shelled the fort. This story always makes me emotional. It's utterly sad that the younger generations in the US are being taught to hate our flag and country.

I majored in History and Political Science and graduated University in 1971 and this story is NOT fake! I’ve been to Fort William McHenry in Baltimore Harbor- a National Historic Landmark-which recounts what happened there. There weren’t hundreds of British War Ships but closer to twenty. This was the War of 1812 when we were a young nation and no longer colonies. The British had burned the White House previously. I don’t know where “outdoorsman” gets the idea this story is fake? That flag is in the Smithsonian preserved under glass--very ripped and so brown. I know there was a period where some crazy people rewrote American History books and only devoted one paragraph to WWII and glossed over anything they felt was patriotic-- our son’s high school history book was an example-- but he knew from us that it was nonsense. Fortunately his University courses taught the truth.

Something to remember about the song, is it ends in a question. @@jessedaniel6330 The flag pole was massive, physically impossible to "hold it up", the number of ships were off by an order of magnitude, wrong war, no colonies, we declared the British were not trying to retake the colonies, Key was not trying to free POWs only one doctor, there were not prisoners chained up on the ship he was in he had dinner and was held there till the next day, the bombardment was largely millitary and ineffective (i.e. very few civilians affected and barely 2 dozen casualties, certainly no piles of corpses), "Predominantly not a millitary fort" is a blatant lie, the batteries at the fort were the reason the British retreated and the failed land battle not even discussed which happened at the same time. "Lowering the flag to surrender" Bullshit, the guns firing back were the signal the fort had not been destroyed. What else, quotes were blatantly misattributed because it's a pastor putting words in people's mouth's. The history is mangled, the honor of the people who defended that fort is mangled because apparently their bravery isn't good enough so we need to lie to make them look like martyrs. The British were not trying to get the United States back under British rule. It was the United States that declared war on Britain in 1812, not the other way round. In fact the British ignored the declaration and just carried on trading normally ( 80% of US trade was with Britain) until the United States invaded Canada in July of that year. It wasnt until after the *fifth* attempted invasion of Canada that Britain made a concerted invasion of the US in 1814. When I was in the marines me and another guy got the short stick and had to put the flag up every day. One day California had like 70 mph wind gusts. Well needless to say the flag got blown away. When we got back to our unit you would have thought we let a man die. I never had so much pain put into my body. They had me do so many pushups I couldn't even get myself up.

Thank You. To let you know, The Patriot was the Revolutionary War in 1776. This was the 2nd round with GB in 1812. They burnt most of Washington DC down. Dolley Madison, the First Lady at the time, was there, while the British were marching in. She and the servance were grabbing all the stuff they could, out of the capital. The US Constuction, Picture, ect. into a wagon to get them out of WDC, so they would not be destroyed.

LMFAO....do you even know which flag is hanging? It's NOT the one flown during the battle. The one flown during the battle was a small foul weather flag. The next morning it was taken down and the Great Garrison flag was hoisted as a "fuck you" to the British. It was a huge american flag....that is what is in the Smithsonian.

There’s a few inaccuracies of the narration, referring to the colonies when it was already the USA, misattributing the quote “I’d rather die on my feet than live on my knees.” To George Washington when it actually came from a Mexican Revolutionary General Zapata, but the general story of ft McHenry is right.

I finally got to see the”real star spangled flag” this April at the American History Smithsonian Museum, my heart stopped actually seeing it! I have always wanted to see it, but seeing it in person was life changing. I will always remember seeing it, you couldn’t take pics of it, because the real one is so guarded so it will always be safe under humidity and light tested. But I will always remember how I felt seeing it, and the guard keeping it safe will always be my hero! I will always wish I had a pic of it, but will always understand how precious the original it is, how many millions of lives and families it represents. I will uphold the flag, no matter what, I will live forever on my feet and raise my kids to live on their feet and respect every single person who holds our flag high and respect every person who gives their life to our flag with respect!

The flag is an ideal. Yes it's a symbol of our government like it is in most places but it is so much more. The flag is more about the country we want to be than the country we are. I attribute that to the comparatively optimistic culture of the US compared to most countries.

If you love historical documentaries as I do, get a copy of Ken Burns' "The Civil War". It was a 9 part series on PBS aired in 1990. It's total running time was 11.5 hours. It was so riveting, poignant, and emotional that I watched it during a rebroadcast marathon from start to finish. Its format included amazing photography and commentary by Shelby Foote, author of one of the best books about the American Civil War. Best of all was the inclusion of primary source materials from diaries and letters penned by soldier's and their families. The narration made the whole war come to life with the human emotions and grief on both sides of the conflict, with both North and South perspectives .While it's too long to react to, I think you'd really enjoy it for your own viewing.. Try to find a copy of this DVD.

You mentioned the movie The Patriot. Interesting enough, much of the movie was filmed in upstate SC very near me. The house the family lived in is an actual structure in historic Brattensville SC. The house and property were once owned by a promenint Dr. and can be visited and toured. In the movie a battle takes place in a field in front of the house. In reality the field sits behind the house and a two lane road is in the front. The field was super imposed to appear in front. Many of the wooded scenes were filmed in King's Mtn State and Federal park. The ocean front scenes were shot near Charleston SC.
