According to Brittanica, there were 28 deaths, 250 injured, and 50 captured americans. There were over 1000 troops inside the fort, amongst the large population of civilians taking refuge from the nearby city. Something like 1800 shells and 800 rockets were fired at the fort for 25 hours. 19 ships shelled the fort. This story always makes me emotional. It's utterly sad that the younger generations in the US are being taught to hate our flag and country.

The remains of that very flag is in the care of the Smithsonian in Washington D.C. where it is on display under glass. Now you know why we're so proud of our flag - it stands not just for freedom, but the lives of those who have died through the years protecting the U.S. and her people. Actually that isn’t the storm flag that was flown and shelled that night. Nobody knows what happened to it. The flag in the Smithsonian is the garrison flag that was raised over Fort McHenry that morning. Unfortunately Paul Harvey messed that part up when he said Fort Henry. The fort is in Baltimore MD on the harbor.

Think of it this way, our framers wrote our Constitution so that members of our government can be replaced as we choose. For that matter our whole government and it's structure can be removed and changed (although not easily). But what they were very keenly aware of is that while we might readily want to change those whom we elected, it would very likely never be the case that we ever decided to "scrap" the whole thing and start over! 👍💪🎆❤️🇺🇸

@@jessedaniel6330 The flag pole was massive, physically impossible to "hold it up", the number of ships were off by an order of magnitude, wrong war, no colonies, we declared the British were not trying to retake the colonies, Key was not trying to free POWs only one doctor, there were not prisoners chained up on the ship he was in he had dinner and was held there till the next day, the bombardment was largely millitary and ineffective (i.e. very few civilians affected and barely 2 dozen casualties, certainly no piles of corpses), "Predominantly not a millitary fort" is a blatant lie, the batteries at the fort were the reason the British retreated and the failed land battle not even discussed which happened at the same time. "Lowering the flag to surrender" Bullshit, the guns firing back were the signal the fort had not been destroyed. What else, quotes were blatantly misattributed because it's a pastor putting words in people's mouth's. The history is mangled, the honor of the people who defended that fort is mangled because apparently their bravery isn't good enough so we need to lie to make them look like martyrs. And lie to make their enemy look like monsters, rather than normal people fighting in a war that we declared (for good reason, but this is just a set of patriotic lies).

LMFAO....do you even know which flag is hanging? It's NOT the one flown during the battle. The one flown during the battle was a small foul weather flag. The next morning it was taken down and the Great Garrison flag was hoisted as a "fuck you" to the British. It was a huge american flag....that is what is in the Smithsonian.

I'm from a military family myself and I have great respect for our service members. And I have great love for the American flag. It's not the wind that makes the American flag fly, it's the last breath that of each soldier who has died for our country. 🫡🇺🇸🪖

Now that you've seen this, you need to find and read the poem My Name is Old Glory. It's a beautiful poem about our flag. They have a recitation of it at military retirements and sometimes funerals. Beautiful, and such a tear jerker.

This is why we do NOT disrespect the flag. It has a proud history representing freedom from its inception. Too many men and women have lied down their lives in her defense. God Bless America.

Now you've seen this, you should check out the performance of the Anthem from before this year's NFL Superbowl by Chris Stapleton. It is agreed by many to be the greatest presentation of the song in many years. Just a man and his guitar.

that battle was actually in 1812. The British tried to come back and take the colonies by force again! They did not succeed obviously! That actual flag is in a museum in DC. As a veteran our anthem and our flag mean EVERYTHING to me. My family has a long line of those who served in our military! From my Dad who was a USAF pilot , my brother in law who's a retired Ranger to my son in law who's a blackhawk pilot. NO ONE disrepects our military, our flag or our anthem in front of me EVER! I may be a 68 yr old Nana but I come down hard on whomever tries it!!

It was the United States that declared war on Britain because of impressment and trade then tried to expand by invading the British territories of Canada
@dominicbuckley8309

The British were not trying to get the United States back under British rule. It was the United States that declared war on Britain in 1812, not the other way round. In fact the British ignored the declaration and just carried on trading normally ( 80% of US trade was with Britain) until the United States invaded Canada in July of that year. It wasnt until after the *fifth* attempted invasion of Canada that Britain made a concerted invasion of the US in 1814. At the time of the battle of Baltimore, peace negotiations were already taking place, after Washington had been burnt.

I would never ever expect a foreigner to do so, but my gut reaction to seeing you watching the flag during the anthem was “why isn’t his hand on his heart??” Haha, it shows you the pride I have in my country. Not in my president, or my government, but in my countrymen who died and still would die to keep us free.

Every time I hear our Star Spangled Banner at a public event, I end up with tears rolling down my face because I know the history behind the song. Usually, at least one person around me sees my emotion and asks, "Are you okay, sir?" And, I always respond with, "We are all more than okay. We are Americans." Freedom is taken for granted by so many people. I hope every free nation on the Earth will take pride in their respective country's national flag. Sacrifice was sewn into every one of those flags. Let it never be forgotten now or ever.

When the National anthem was written, it was America's second war with England. It was the War of 1812. The movie"Patriot" was based on America's war of independence, circa 1776.
