It's great to see more youngsters getting involved in farming in SA. I certainly feel her pain with regards to all the problems that farmers face on a daily basis. Droughts, disease, theft, so many things that put us down. Now with the coronavirus hitting us all, this makes it equally challenging for us to look after our livestock and crops (in my case 66% of my labour disappeared at the start of the lockdown so I have to look after hundreds of sheep and cattle with minimal staff to support). Many of us have had to diversify, we added self catering guest cottages a few years ago to try and help us through all the times when farming related debt is about to take you over the edge. South Africans are resilient though, and we will make the best of what we have. Good luck to this father and daughter team.

The SA government needs to offer farming classes to these new farmers so they can learn proper farming really quickly. That girl was learning as she was going along, while white farmers in South Africa are some of the best in the world and could teach her and other young farmers how to avoid such drawbacks.

Sadly many of those of us who farm do not have the time to play games. We have to work, and work everyday. And when employees don't come in to work because they feel too tired, or are drunk after payday, you have to do the work yourself. Many of the commentators on here live in a dream world and think farming is easy - it is not. When it's raining and snowing my employees are all sitting working comfortably and warm inside a shed with a roof over their head whilst I go out in the freezing cold to feed and check on sheep and cattle. So people must never say the boss just sits around and does nothing!
@user-vw6bk4pb4lАй бұрын
@ashcro11 No one forced you to farm if you are dependent on your unreliable low wage workers to make it work then that's on you. Africans were farming for thousands of years, that's why European slave traders targeted tribes with expert farming knowledge like the rice farmers of West Africa and Madagascar. Or the Khoi to look after their cattle. Humans are an intelligent species we adapt and grow through challenges. Africans have forgotten farming and we are going to relearn it. Who says we're afraid the hard stuff? You guys just can't accept the idea that you are not expendable, there's nothing that you do that we can't do ourselves

The Boers shouldn't despair. Nothing wrong can succeed in the long run. The country will fall apart or revert to savagery like during Shaka Zulu and Dingaan times, but in the end the Vierkleur(The Boer flag)will fly again. It has all been foretold(even Obama's presidency in the U.S.)by Siener van Rendsburg 😎😁👍👍

GREAT! This is what most of those jobless youths in the South African township should be encouraged to venture into farming. If you don't feed yourselves or create your own job and be waiting for the white man to feed/exploit you, then you're screwed, and you give ammunition to them to criticise you for being dependant on them to feed which's their propaganda right now. Show the world your capability that you don't need those SOBS to feed yourselves or better still hire them as farm-hand and pay them peanuts just the other way round.

You don't become *anything* overnight or after a 6-month course, you have to practice for a while and actually do the work to become it. Which is exactly what she is doing. She might not be a farmer now, but in a few years time of her working at it and trying her best (which she is doing right now), she will be a farmer then. You have to start from somewhere after all- we all can't be experts overnight without being beginners first, and she is a beginner right now. Let her learn and grow, don't spread negativity here. Everyone can learn everything that they want to learn after all.
