"Black Swan” tells the story of a dancer, an artist, who fears the death of their career: the moment when they can no longer perform on stage. The moment when music no longer touches BTS’s hearts or stirs their passion is the moment when the specter of that “first death” appears. "Black Swan" dives deep into the group's fears as artists. In the song, the group details their fear of losing their passion for music, and how they are determined to never let themselves reach that point, because music is all they have.

Jimin was top of his class in Contemporary Dance before joining Big Hit and BTS. He also did Pop and Lock in Middle School, but he excels in contemporary dance. If you want to see a bit of ballet though, watch 2020 MMA's - the first song is Black Swan, but no singing just dance. It's so beautiful. Black Swan was my intro to BTS and will always be a favorite of mine. I absolutely love everything about it.

Jimin was a top contemporary dancer at his school, it's different than ballet. Tupac did ballet though! Not joking, he actually did ballet in high school. He also liked Shakespeare and theater/musicals. His knowledge in these classical type of arts helped his rap music later on. BTS looked classy af in the Black Swan era. RM looks like a boss, but I still like his look and style from his solo music video era the best, like for Joke and Do You 😆 By the way, have you guys seen that Vice video about the trainee who was suppose to be in BTS but got cut from the team? It's really quite sad actually, he trained so hard and lived together with them, was good friends with them😌 He said he wasn't envious of their fame or money, but he's envious that they got to stick together as bros and he couldn't. Thanks for all the reactions, great vids as always 😊

I think the harp instrument you're talking about is Gayageyum. The gayageum is a like a plucked zither with 12 strings, though some more recent variants have 18, 21 or 25 strings. It's a well known Korean traditional instrument. Chinese also have one similar to named guzheng. Its a music instrument that creates beautiful melody by plucking the strings. You need a lot of practice and finger technique to accomplish to play it. I was happy since BTS used an Korean traditional instrument in their music not only black swan they used Korean instruments in some of their other songs too, such as idol. To me gayageum was the perfect instrument that could go with a song like black swan. I also heard an cover of black swan using that instrument it almost sounded identical.

It's a masterpiece Black Swan and that MV. They are all great. Jimin did a dance solo that is filmed, I leave the link at the end in case you are interested and also a post from an Army about Jimin and the reason for his unique dance. (Repost)❤️JIMIN, at age 11-12 started studying, performing, & competing (winning every competition), in hip hop, popping (excelled), & street dancing, while attending the renowned Just Dance Academy in Busan where he's from! He was so good that an instructor even had the high tuition fee waived at one point! This was while also attending middle school, where he loved sports, being quite athletic, joined the football team, excellent at track, great at basketball, & billiards! Jimin also, all throughout his schooling, was known as a top scholar, achieving perfect scores, especially in math & science which just always came easy to him! Jimin was even class president for 9 yrs in a row! Jimin, all throughout his schooling, was also quite good in art class, as well as calligraphy. Jimin, then also took up contemporary dance. The media, after seeing a performance of Jimin's performing at a huge Busan Festival Event, called Jimin "The rising star of Busan"!! JIMIN also studied ballet & traditional Korean dance while attending Busan High School of the Arts. Jimin still went to Just Dance Academy to take hip hop classes whenever he could because his first love has always been hip hop, even though he was now majoring in contemporary! JIMIN even had an offer to dance overseas, but declined because he also wanted to become a singer since the 2nd grade, to the dismay of one of his dance instructors who said "The world of dance was going to lose a great artist"!! So Jimin then went and auditioned for BigHit Entertainment, (company BTS is signed with), being the very last member to join, being a trainee for only a few months (which is unheard of for most Kpop idols), as opposed to the 2-3 yrs of being a trainee the other members had! But Jimin was so good that he was assigned the official title of one of the two Main Dancers, as well as Lead Vocalist. Jimin was even assigned most of the high notes since the very beginning, because even without all that training in the beginning, he was that good, a natural born singer who, just like his dancing makes you feel every emotion and feeling he's trying to convey! JIMIN, also, for 8 yrs, since a quite young boy, trained in various forms (4), of martial arts: Taekwondo (Blackbelt), Hapkido, Kumdo (Korean form of Kendo), & Chinese martial arts. He even won a scholarship, the only student to do so, to study more extensively in China for awhile! All the martial arts training has given JIMIN his phenomenal inner core strength, as well as his amazing flexibility, which has enabled Jimin to achieve all those breathtakingly spectacular gravity defying dance moves! JIMIN has found a way to incorporate all his various dance disciplines, as well as his extensive training in martial arts into his unique, ever so special, outstandingly amazing dancing abilities!! JIMIN, has been called 'Stage Commander', known for his amazing, so mesmerizing stage presence. Each dance move is executed flawlessly, his extensions all the way to the fingertips, his lines so clean, his fluidity, his poise & elegance, his ever so graceful moves, but yet, sharp, quick & deliberate when required! He focuses on every detail! Known for his work ethics and being a perfectionist to a fault, spending hours in the practice room, will study every move, even focusing on hands to fingertips. Even his facial expressions, or the look in his eyes! Every single detail he focuses on. Jimin tends to take in the music and interprets all the emotion & feelings, whatever it's trying to convey through his body movements as well as his vocals. JIMIN has now won the prestigious titles for 3 yrs in a row, for both KING OF KPOP, as well as also winning BEST TOP #1 DANCER IN KPOP, also 3 yrs in a row!! Jimin is also referred to as "Rookie's Bible" because all rookie idols, try to emulate & study every move he makes, trying to learn from him! Aside from all that Jimin has won other countless award, broken many records. His 5 solos have broken charting records worldwide, as well as being top seller, plus most listened to. Also breaking records for being #1 branding marketing idol, every single month for now, 3 yrs, a feat never achieved before, and still ongoing! The term the "Jimin Effect" is now in the Urban Dictionary! So much more as well but will stop here. (Solo de Jiminkzbin.info/www/bejne/rn7JoWWgmLBoaK8)

Hey guys, thanks a stack for this reaction, it’s an incredible song for sure, one of my favourites - the rhythm, the flow, the lyrics, the beat, ah - I just love it 🤷‍♂️😂 Oh, and Jimin did popping/locking/hip hop dance in middle school, and contemporary dance in high school (but he became a trainee at 16 years old and went to Seoul), so he would have left Busan (where he majored in contemporary dance at school) at least 18 months before finishing high school, and although I know he finished school in Seoul and graduated (he graduated in early 2014, but he left Busan some time in 2012), I don’t know what he majored in at school in Seoul…He also did martial arts from elementary school, he has a black belt in Taekwondo, and he did Hapkido too, plus Kendo for maybe 8 years, and I mention this because I think it has impacted his dancing style, he is very athletic with a really strong core…🤷‍♂️🙏 I don’t know a lot about these things, I’m just a nurse - I’m writing what I have picked up about him over the years 💜

Just so you know, you missed one last scene in the MV with JK's "shadow". I recommend always letting the video play out to the last second. You never know when they'll add something to the end. I believe Jimin learned both popping and locking as well as contemporary dance as a kid, starting somewhere around middle school. He's definitely a fluid dancer, but can show those sharp edges when needed. It makes him extremely versatile and truly mesmerizing to watch. I recommend adding the MV Making of video to your list of things to watch for this one. You get to see how they did the shadows on the walls and a bunch of extra information about the song and how they did the MV. Honestly, the making of videos are a must-watch for all of the MVs that have one. It's always amazing getting to see that behind the scenes. Great reaction. This song is one of my favorites. It's so different to everything else they've done, and the lyrics are just gorgeous. For anyone, not just dancers, like the original quote, or singers, as they relate it to here. When you have something you absolutely love to do, whether it be dance, music, art, or anything else, and something happens, voluntarily or not, and you can no longer do that, it can be devastating. A dancer gets injured and can no longer dance, a performer gets older and can no longer perform as they used to, or as they say here, when music no longer moves them anymore. When something means that much to you, the fear of losing it unexpectedly is real. They do such a good job of articulating that. It's beautiful and terrifying at the same time. That right there is the magic of BTS. They manage to perfectly articulate a lot of things that we ourselves feel, but sometimes can't express quite right. Borahae!! 💜💜💜

Hi, I am back. Good reaction, ty. Jimin is a contemporary dancer that is the name your looking for. This choreo was way more in his wheelhouse. But the other members slayed as well. Love this song and choreo so much! Also, pls watch till the end. Gosh your rusty. We don't stop BTS MV's until it's the end end. Sheesh. Rolls eyes. 🙄 This song was inspired by Martha Grahams quote a dancer dies twice once when they loose their passion for the dance. The first death is more painful. They explore and show us their fear. They are brave and share their emotions with us always. It's a beautiful thing. hugs. -NY USA Army💜

7:52 They chose to use autotune in this song was to show the group's shadow (they're deepest collective fears/secrets) vocally, the fear being that they would fall out of love with their craft. It was RMs idea to use the autotune to blend their voices, (which makes sense since he adores Kanye and Kanye uses autotune on his vocals). Black swan is based on Jung's work of the map of the soul where the shadow, ego and persona (and more) are all equally important parts to a person's construct. The dance moves in particular you can see in the beginning they pluck what seems to be invisible string instruments, while at the end of the choreography they seem to be hanging by those very strings like puppets. Their shadow (fear/secret) has consumed them. So... the song draws inspiration from both the ballet (Swan Lake) in it's choreo and imagery, but also draws a lot of inspiration from the movie "Black Swan", which in turn is heavily based on the Japanese anime film "Perfect Blue". Both movies break identity and deal (in a non-obvious way) with Carl Jung's theory of the self: Persona, Ego, Shadow. In these movies, a female performer spirals into insanity as increased pressures in her career cause her to lose grip of herself and reality. “Black Swan” tells the story of Nina, a passionate ballerina (Natalie Portman) who struggles to maintain her sanity while competing for the main role (the White Swan, Odette) in “Swan Lake.” Meanwhile, “Perfect Blue” follows Mima, a former (Japanese) pop idol whose sense of reality begins to waiver as she attempts to transition into a career as a serious actress. Both stories feature a female protagonist is put in highly stressful situations and that makes them question their identity and ultimately conjure up a doppelganger that messes with their psyche (persona, shadow and ego, basically clash). Just as Nina suffers from the pressures of being a ballerina, Mima is also forced to deal with the strict expectations of being a Japanese idol. Their personal conflicts also bleed into their professional lives causing them to spiral out of control. In Nina’s case, it comes in the form of her oppressive mother and in Mima’s situation, it’s an obsessive stalker fan. At the core of the film, both protagonists have a psychological battle with themselves that results in hallucinations that blurs the lines between fiction and reality. In the end, like I said, these films break the self and deal with themes like loss of passion and the heartbreak that come with working for your dreams. Black Swan (BTS), at its core, reflects these themes. I think that Perfect Blue can be chillingly on point for BTS, since they too are idols and experience some of the things that Mima experienced as an idol and continues to go through. BTS reflect the core concepts of these movies, identity, and conceptualise them to reflect their fear of losing their passion for music and, by extension, losing themselves. They portray people who are afraid that music is all there is to them and are afraid of losing themselves if they lose their passion. How's that for a deeper meaning? Ahahahaha This last part is mostly my analysis with some commonly known facts about Black Swan 8:55 Oh boy, Jimin's dance haha he did train in ballet, but not rigorously, as his main focus was contemporary dance and that's what he mostly trained for during highschool. He is "professionally" trained in contemporary, hip-hop and idol dance. Even the members have said that Black Swan is Jimin's song, that he embodies the black swan. This is further highlighted in the 2020 MAMA version of Black Swan, where he does a duet with Jungkook! (here's the link for a breakdown of the moment twitter.com/mintynkks/status/1335236325373448192?s=20&t=2C90i3inGV9MBv5dgoiYQA Spoiler alert, since I dunno if you guys plan to react to the 2020MAMA performance. Which I HIGHLY recommend, it has an amazing performance of Dynamite as well). Anygays, Jimin's dance style is unique and probably near impossible to replicate since its highly influenced by his 8+ years experience in martial arts. He does a lot of tricking and aerials s you could see (9:17 ish) with his medialuna (which is a very dangerous movement to do, because you can easily overrotate and injure your ankles). Black Swan is one of my favourite songs from BTS! I actually got a tattoo inspired by Black Swan yesterday! Cheers, mate! Sorry for the huge comment, as per usual. I don't know why I keep apologising ahahaha

They are all swans... in there dance representation and quickly change from white to black and back again. When they did this live in LA in December 21, they created a whole black-feathered swan with all the bodies. It was epic. You can catch it online. The crowd... and me, went wild. Jimin of course is a professional dancer.

One of the meanings of "Black swan" is that something (bad) happened unexpectedly. Opposite to "grey rhino" (in Blue and Gray) that everybody expects (bad) things to happen but they act as they don´t care.

Jimin has studied numerous different dance types, but he's a very strong contemporary dancer, which emphasizes smooth and quick movements with accent moves from the head, hands and feet. I believe it was Busan art school that actually let him finish out his courses for free at one point so that they wouldn't lose such an incredible talent. All seven of them are extremely good dancers, but Jimin is on another level entirely 💜

Some things to notice in the song: - Jin looking into mirrors but when he turns the reflections/shadows(?) don't. - the song starts with white clothes, them flying. Ends with shadows not flying. -shadow at the beginning dancing crazily, but in the last scene calmly settles down In fact the album has interlude by Suga called Shadow, where he comes to terms with his inner dark self.

Love you guys but was a tad surprised for someone deep diving into BTS from pre-debut times forward that you cut the final scene of the mv off. Black Swan is an applied exposition of the Jungian concept of individuation complete with Jung's concept of Shadow elements emerging as light is shown on the Persona. The last scene was related to individuation. On the surface artistic block (first death) is the outward meaning but BTS included Black Swan as part of a series of songs engaging the works of Karl Jung, even naming the album that it is a track on Map of the Soul after the Jungian book. Perhaps an explanation video might help you understand this connection. Good luck and keep up the good work.
