So they use autotune in this song to show the group's shadow (they're deepest collective fears/secrets) vocally, the fear being that they would fall out of love with their craft. It was RMs idea to use the autotune to blend their voices, (which makes sense since he adores Kanye and Kanye uses autotune on his vocals). Black swan is based on Jung's work of the map of the soul where the shadow, ego and persona (and more) are all equally important parts to a person's construct. The dance moves in particular you can see in the beginning they pluck what seems to be invisible string instruments, while at the end of the choreography they seem to be hanging by those very strings like puppets. Their shadow (fear/secret) has consumed them.

Autotune is really normal thing nowdays but then there are artists whom can sing without it, like BTS... (I mean even good singers all over the world use autotune for various artistic purposes)
@kentokim
@kentokim 2 жыл бұрын
@@chisays9936 no you don't understand...it's normal now yes but it was popularised in some way (especially in hip-hop) and that was through Kanye West (after Michael Jackson complemented him on its use). He used it in a similar way that the rap line uses it now and even Travis Scott uses it (who Kanye West mentored). That's the problem that many people don't understand is that, yes BTS doesn't need autotune but it is a stylistic and artistic choice that makes sense once you take into account their hip-hop background.

@@chisays9936 I hear you. There is this widespread idea that autotune is only used on bad singing. But producers use it in pop and hip hop all the time. I think it is interesting that when it is used with singers who "don't need it", like BTS, it becomes obvious that it is a style choice. It is simply another instrument. SUGA in particular likes to use it for effect in his production. In Black Swan, it makes their harmonies sound so dreamy and far away.

This is the song that made me ARMY. As a dancer, I recognized the Martha Graham reference as soon as I heard the song - which I discovered at a time I was forced to choose between enduring major surgery or giving up dance. This song saved me and gave me the courage to go through the surgery and difficult recovery. I'm still dancing today because of BTS and this song. I know a lot about dance (not to toot my own horn, but I have been studying dance and dancing for several decades) and Jimin, in particular, is one of the best contemporary dancers I have ever seen.

i really like to think that the part where they say "film it now" is because as artists, musicians, dancers, painters, songwriters, they take their feelings as inspiration so even in the moment of despair, they want to create (or it's their instict) from that and capture it to make art.

yeah documenting youth years is kinda a two side coin for them. on the one hand, it's a really good memory chest and it's also one of the pillars for the connection with fans. on the other hand tho, it's like being watched all the time. that can't not affect you, right. i also remembered is jungkook's lines from his solo song My Time "My life has been a movie all the time", it correlates with "film it now" from Black Swan, that tell us that there are not only good and happy things that have been recorded. when they suffer, when they feel down or insecure, cameras don't turn away but then again nothing is only good or bad in this world. they are open about their darkest sides, they are not shy to show it in hopes their experience may help someone. in a sence this honesty and vulnerability is a great sacrifice of privacy. as Jungkook once said "There could always be someone who takes advantage of the things I say or do, but I’m confident a lot of people will use them for good"

I have been part of the BTS Army for a year now and it is the depth of their lyrics about the psyche that originally got me hooked. I have a masters degree in clinical psychology so I really enjoy all the Carl Jung references, but it is definitely their ability to write lyrics about problems that we all face that has resonated with both my heart and mind. Above all, it is the members’ fun and distinct personalities, their humility, and their strength of character that has made me a committed Army. I really enjoy your reactions and appreciate the time and effort you take to understand the meaning behind their lyrics.

When you made a comment about watching the movie because of a BTS song, I definitely could relate. When I first watched their Blood, Sweat, and Tears MV and heard RM quoting a passage, I was very confused. When I found out it was from Demian, a book by Hermann Hesse, I had to read it. Eventually I read that as well as the study of the book by Stephen K. Roney and it was life changing for me! It came at a perfect time when I was at a crossroad in my life so it felt especially serendipitous. There were many books and references I checked out just to understand the depth of BTS’ songs. At this point, they are definitely not a boyband to me but more of a phenomenon in artistic expression.

The shadows are a theme of the whole album that this song is on. The album is called Map of the Soul 7, and the theme is from Carl Jung's theory of psychology. Jung says a person has a Persona (outer image shown to others), a Shadow (inner self hidden from others), and an Ego (self). The rap line has 3 songs, RM's Intro: Persona, Suga's Interlude: Shadow, and J-Hope's Outro: Ego.

When I "discovered" BTS it was through the dance (Dope and Fire) - since my daughter danced hip hop/street dance - but it was the lyrics that kept me coming back, checking out more and becoming an ARMY. It is nice to se that you put a lot of time in to understand the lyrics.

It was not what a lot of people thought. The fact that they actually had something to say instead of the canned cookie cutter music that was coming out at the time in kpop is one of the primary reasons that they caught on with younger people in the first place. Even more impressive is that the bulk of their music is composed/written/produced by the members themselves. And they are in the Los Angeles Theatre.

There are several things going on in this video. First, the primary item is that it is based a famous quote from the modern dancer and choreographer Martha Graham who stated “a dancer dies twice - once when they stop dancing and this first death is the more painful.” You hear this line early in the song. BTS adapted the quote, in part, to discuss anyone who losses their art. For them it is fear of losing their passion for music. Second, the actual dancing is in the Martha Graham style. Notice that while you hear Jimin sing, you never see him sing. His dance is a homage to Graham, who we can thank for many of today modern dances. His dance starts out flowing and graceful, but as his dance goes on, he struggles and suffers, till the end when there is nothing left. Far more about this further down. For me, however, when Jimin sings “No song affects me anymore - crying a silent cry” was also haunting because it is about how one has had a complete loss of love/desire/ability for an art they once were passionate about. Third, RM part is about what BTS life purpose is and what it would be like if they lost that purpose, it would be like a death. “If this can no longer resonate - no longer make my heart vibrate - then this may be how I die my first death” Fourth, between Suga and Jin lyrics it is expressed, that while they may have a fear of loss, they will keep fighting to keep the desire. Suga is in his studio and stage and sings that he will not let the waves drag him away and Jin says he will shout with “ferocity” to keep his passion. You also see that while Jin’s image is frozen on the outside, inside he will keep moving, fighting to keep his passion. Fifth, there are direct visual connects to the movie Black Swam. In the beginning of the movie, Natalie Portman dances the white swam (Jimin and the guy are all in white). As her character starts to mental fall apart while she is in the dance studio (Suga) the has walls are covered in mirrors so she can see herself dance (Jin). As she loses it, she keeps seeing herself switching between the white and black swam. In the MV we see Jimin quickly go from white, to black, then back to white clothing, and then the last time he is in white he cuts his throat, the white swan is dead. Next shot we see Jimin slowly rising by himself but not in the dance studio or stage but the floor. He is now in black; he has become the Black Swan. In movie Natalie now dances the black swam with imaginary wings. Jimin sprouts black wings before he starts to dance again. Jimin’s dance now becomes more desperate in his movement and on the “killing me now - killing me now” part of the song we see him do an over the head leg flip which represent his last attempt to reach up. After that he is dying and in the end we see the death of the dancer. Sixth, there is also an art film that Big Hits commissioned from MN Dance Company that goes along with this. It is a true master piece of modern dance. It has seven dancers with one being a swam. The swam is not able to fly free, it is being held down, like BTS is now. Even if it gets away for little while, he gets caught and held. The making of the art film was a way to show that even if BTS's voices fade away, art will continue. kzbin.info/www/bejne/rHjFpoh8h8mMp7c&ab_channel=HYBELABELS Finally, as you might have figured out, I am very connected to this song and trained as a dancer all my youth. There was a saying at the studio that applies here, real art does not make you feel, real art IS a feeling. That is what this song and MV are - a feeling. Well, if you made it the end of this I hope this helped you understand this MV a bit more. What I did not touch on is any of the Carl Jung and shadow references, which there are ton.

@@DestructiveMediaYT Thank you for your kind words. MN Dance Company is from Nova Gorica, Slovenia - they are a very talented group with great story telling. I come from the world of contemporary dance (in my youth). Jimin will often do contemporary dance, so one needs to remember that contemporary dance is story telling. It starts a step BEFORE you go on stage. Most often when you see Jimin separate from the group, he is storytelling thought the dance (like in Black Swan). His LIE live piece (not MV) is story telling wiht the dance and is full of LIES told though the dance, lights, tone, music, and finally the lyrics. BTS is an interesting group. Not many popular groups that include contemporary dance, which is one of reasons why there are a perforamance group (V even said this recently). They have many tools to tell a story and use the tool that best suits the medium. They also many take several songs and/or MV to talk about an issue. Finally, the way you are approaching BTS is so intersting. The deeper dive has been enjoyable. I saw a few things in different light when you discussed them (I am still working understanding the double and triple meaning in rap). I understand the meaning behind a fan kick, I do not alway get three different meanings behind a single word.

I appreciate your reactions Bryan and that is why I’d like to give you my personal insight. Again, it is just my opinion and maybe other fellow Armys don’t feel the same and you can just disregard it altogether. I personally think it’s always best to start with the MV with subs as you get a whole idea of the message BTS would like to convey. If you’re doing Doolset lyrics anwyay I wouldn’t do any lyrics video at all since a lot of us don’t appreciate the inaccuracies on who sings what or what’s being said. Lastly, I do feel you should do the dance practice after listening to the song itself as it wouldn’t spoil it for you. I don’t mean any criticism with this, I hope you understand where I’m coming from! 💜

This music video also represents Jung’s concept of the shadow, since your shadow includes your deep seated fears. They are afraid to lose their passion for music, and the shadow behind Suga at the beginning is huge and has a life of it’s own. Then at the end of the song they have faced their fear and the shadow loses it’s power over them and Jungkook’s shadow at the end of the video shrinks and disappears. Also, appropriate to react to a video where Jimin is the featured dancer with his contemporary dance background on the morning that the news broke that he had emergency appendix surgery last night and tested positive for Covid while at the hospital to get his appendix removed.

Ah, I love this reaction, you have the opportunity to see and understand the integrity of the song, first by seeing the choreography which is very often linked to the lyrics and the mv, more after you have discovered the lyrics and the mv to end with breakdown the lyrics. Just one thing, they have pretty much all of their title songs and a lot of b-sides, performances attached, whether it's from talk shows, concerts, awards shows or music programs. So for Black Swan here there are many performances for this song, I would recommend if you want to see them dance, watch the one from MMA 2020, then the one they did in concert in LA last November to finish with a normal performance of Black Swan like that done in James Corden's show for example. These performances are all different. I don't know if you plan to listen to other songs after this one, I recommend Fake Love. Otherwise, I recommend you the introduction of BTS, '7 members of BTS (update 2021)' by Ida.S, you can better familiarize yourself with the members, who they are, their projects and roles. Ps. There are explanatory videos on each BTS song, which I recommend, especially in the future for those of the BU (BTS Universe) and the songs of the Rapline.

Notice on the choreo, at the start 4:21 the ripple effect w/ the hands starts from the inside with Jimin outwards, but at 8:52 it's the opposite, starts outermost towards inside. It's up for interpretation for anyone, saw 1 army says it's like a flower blooming then a flower closing. ☺️ mine is I feel we sometimes go out and open up ourselves to the world to express our art, our passions, and along the way we lose track of why, so in the end we need to go back "inside" ourselves to remember. ☺️💜 21:34 Jin turns around looks back to the camera but his reflections do not move. Hope u checked out the Art Film video for this song ☺️ Interesting to hear from someone who has very different taste to some of BTS genres. I know a lot of people who arent into rap at all starts liking the rap side of BTS. I myself is not into EDM/Techno music, but they have songs that has some elements of those, they're not my favorite but overtime I have come to appreciate them too.

I always thought that there were two other meanings that were missed. Martha Graham also said, "I get up, I fall down, all the while I am dancing." Meaning, whether good or bad happens, she is always dancing, because that is who she is and her passion/purpose. So her whole life is not just expressed through dance, but IS dance and I think it is similar for them with their music. The other (and very literal) interpretation has to do with the sea with no light. Almost every decently popular kpop group has some kind of unique light stick that represents their group that their fans bring to concerts. BTS has the ARMY bomb. When a kpop group is performing and the people in the audience either do not have, or turn off their light sticks it is called a black ocean. It is a huge deal to a group because if they get a black ocean it either means their fans are upset with them and it is a message/protest or it means that their fans are gone. BTS works very hard to maintain their deep connection with Army and to show their love and appreciation for all that Army does for them. The idea of getting a black ocean is probably horrific to them because the relationship between BTS and Army is very symbiotic.

He has been working a lot on TXT songs (and he even asked RM for help with one of their songs) and my guess is he will also be more involved in the new BTS album than he has been in the past few years. So I am looking forward to what he does with BTS music wise now that he has more time to focus on music again.

I’ve always said that Bang PD is a genius when he picked all the members. Every member is mega talented (rapping, singing, dancing, writing, producing), they have awesome chemistry together (they are absolutely hilarious), they sound so great all mixed together, their visuals are eye candy. They just gel so smooth as a group. I can’t really see how he could have done any better. I know I couldn’t have. Btw I appreciate these kinds of reactions you are doing because I get tired of people fan girling/boying over their physical appearance. I can’t blame them too much, I have eyes too .. but there is no shortage of those. I’d rather watch them being appreciated for their talent and the deeper meanings of these songs. So thank you for being another one of the ones I can really enjoy. 💜

Two comments: 1. V's most recent single, "Christmas Tree", really showcases his range, from his deep, rich, soulful voice to his ethereal falsetto. Despite the title, it's actually a love song, not a Christmas song. The official MV is from MostContents channel (not BTS or Hybe) because it's a soundtrack to a drama called "Our Beloved Summer". 2. As a translator, I'm happy you're reading both the official subtitle translation and the doolset translation. They are both great translations that serve different purposes. The doolset translation seems to keep close to the original text and provides explanation to cultural references. This is an author-oriented translation, trying to convey everything that the author means to convey. The subtitles have restrictions because they have to fit the two lines on the screen with enough time without making the viewers pause.. The translator has also managed to keep the rhymes, which is not easy to do, involving poring over synonyms and play around with sentence structures to achieve this feat. This is a reader-oriented translation, trying to recreate the experience of the source-language speaker for the target-language speaker, such as the pleasure of hearing rhymes and the convenience of listening to the song and understanding the lyrics at the same time.

Love your deep dive seeing choreography, lyrics and MV. It’s funny you mentioned it looks like they are dancing in water it’s so fluid, they did a live version of the orchestra version on water with it splashing as they did a much more complex version of the dance. The lyrics are so beautiful and yes the lyrics show the right person here. One thing you will find is that some songs like Black Swan, Fake Love etc have so many remixes and even different choreography that make it so fresh with behind the scenes etc you can dig deeply into such complex songs. You keyed in quickly that a goal of the Map of the Soul is to teach the audience Jungian ideas and share their own thoughts.

Love that you did it this way. It is about losing your passion as you were told. It is also (and since people keep getting this wrong) based on the ballet Swan Lake. There are 2 swans one white representing good and pure and a black swan that is evil and conflicted. In many performances one dancer plays both roles(that is what the movie Black Swan focuses on the famous Black Swan pas deux which is one of the hardest choreographies EVER). It is meant to represent the fight within oneself between the light and dark, good and evil. This song by BTS is in the period where they were exploring their shadow selves. Their struggle between their light, dark and temptation. And yes it is based on Jungian theories and the book Demian by Hermann Hesse but Swan Lake predates them both. The depth they go into with their music leaves me speechless. Love this song. 😘💜💜💜💜💜💜💜

Hello Bryan and everyone! Greetings from Mexico. This is my first comment but been subscribed for a few weeks ago now. I got very late to the streaming, but I wanted to thank you for going deep not just in music but in lyrics also, you will find a lot of interesting things. I don't know if someone commented this but Black Swan is part of the "Shadow" section on the Map of the Soul era, so the lyrics explore a very dark and hidden side of what (in this case) the members fear to experience or have experience in one point. There's a lot to dig on Jung's archetypes and I'm not a psychologist, sorry if this is vague. Anyway, another thing is that part of the choreography was based on The Swan lake ballet in which there's a version, a darker/shadow version of the protagonist, and on the MV you will find a few references of Black Swan, Aronofsky's movie. Sorry for the long post. 😅 Thank you again for doing this.

I think you've probably been informed of this already haha but the main dancer doing all the solo shots and playing the shadows in the MV is Jimin. He's a trained contemporary dancer who's often spoken about how dancing (and music) means the world to him and it's when he's on stage that he finally lets go of all his worries and self consciousness and feels the most free. A simple summary of the relation to the black swan theme is that Jimin is playing the role of a dancer so consumed by their perceived need to be perfect that they completely lose themselves and their passion in the process. It's an allegory to how artists/ creative people are often so swallowed by the demands of a capitalistic, competitive world that they often lose their love for something that means the world to them when they pursue it as a career. It's why Jimin is dressed in white in the beginning of the video - he starts out "pure" and his dancing full of passion and emotion. But as the video progresses, you can see his creative side get suppressed as it takes on the form of a shadow trying to break free instead and finally mid video the darkness overtakes him (the black wings) and from that point on he's dressed in all black and dancing in the darkness until finally he collapses at the end of his performance (on an empty stage), realizing that he's lost his love and having died his first death and the shadow finally completely disappears.

Lemoring are the worst lyrics videos as the creator pumps out the video ASAP when the music is released and there are a lot of mistranslation as a result. Black Swan is one of their better songs, imo. Not necessarily the sound, but the overall message, choreo, the amazing lyrics, the outfits, etc. Unfortunately, it got overshadowed (ha!) and did not get the proper respect and comeback time it deserved. I believe it was supposed to be the title track on its own album, but BTS took a long break and they pushed Black Swan onto a longer album with ON as the title. I think it would have had more impact being separate from ON. Also, this was RIGHT before covid hit, which also affected everything. It's a shame, really. This song is amazing. I'm blown away by the lyrics and the meaning every single time.

I don't believe that Black Swan was supposed to be the tittle track on its own album ? . It's about the fear and the shadow , so it's fit with the "shadow" part of the Map of the soul. But I agree it's easy to be "overshadowed" with MOTS 7, because each song in this album is a piece of art ! And the performances, both for ON and Black Swan (and Dyonisos !) are mindblowing.

@@h.vgavriel5838 well MOTS7 was supposedly going to be two albums, MOTS: Shadow and MOTS: Ego presumably, so it's definitely possible that Black Swan was supposed to be the title track for Shadow. Personally I don't think it was overshadowed at all; even though ON was the title track I see more people talking about Black Swan and recommending it to reactors. I think the pure artistry and deep lyrical meaning makes it impossible to be overshadowed 😁

man i remember when this song was released and the fan translations starting coming out on twitter. everyone was dissecting the lyrics and sharing about how they interpret/relate to it. my entire feed was filled with people around my age ( teens to mid thirties) mourning their past passions that they've lost interest in and admitting to feeling afraid of falling out of what hobbies/interests they have left. a lot of times when bts release songs there is a whole group therapy session on twitter lol personally, i'm following a lot of artists on twitter so they were especially hit by the lyrics and the whole "my art is everything to me but what if come to a point where i cant or dont want to create anymore who am i then" thing for me i used to be into many many things (dancing, acting, singing, running, drawing, painting, photography, writing, etc) but as my social anxiety started worsening i slowly dropped the more social hobbies and as my depression worsened i lost all motivation to pursue even the less active ones. to go from having a list of like 10 hobbies that i was all so passionate about, to stopping those activities one by one bc of things seemingly outside of your control...it really feels like having your identity stripped from you.

Hi, i am back. Good reaction, ty. Appreciate u carefully listening to the song. Love this one a lot. I am Russian and there is a a famous ballet called Swan Lake. Here the guys dance in many ways as swans and i love seeing the words reflect in their choreo. I adore the blending of Eng with Korean. It sounds great to my ears. I also love hearing their culture mixed into the beat. Very unique and appealing to me. I am glad u watched a dance practice. Hope u do that more. U will like the movie. I hope u watch it. I have never seen it. I saw the trailer to it. This one has beautiful deep meaning of their lyrics. As you notice like lines " It would be my first death. That's what I'm afraid of ." It has that emotional theme of an artist fear for losing their passion for what they do. With this song BTS dives deep into their inner selves as artists and faces the shadows they had once hidden. The song lends voice to their fears that one day music will no longer be able to move or touch them. The very moment they come face to face with the ‘Black Swan’ within themselves, however, they are stricken with a paradoxical realization that music is all they have. It is a confession of an artist who has truly learned what music means to himself. It's also inspired from Martha Graham, who said “A dancer dies twice once when they stop dancing, and this first death is more painful.” Now with the band on a long break and working on solo albums we know this was also a hint to us that they were struggling. - 2019 ARMY NY USA 💜 Jen W said on 6/7/22 Black Swan ballet: changing from white to black swan - growing up, losing innocence. Black Swan movie - sacrificing mental and physical health to reach the top. Shadow/mirror images - self reflection.

This song says, “The dancer dies twice. The first death is when the dancer stops dancing. And this death is much more painful,” the legendary contemporary dancer Martha Graham made its motif. Just as a dancer faces his first death when he quits dancing, it contains the fear of the moment when he will no longer be able to stand on the stage as an artist. "The more I do music, the more I fear that music will no longer give me a lot of emotion or trembling, but the moment I face my inner 'Black Swan' from the depths of my heart, I paradoxically realize that there is only music." [Suga] Ayy, they say my heart is not beating no more listening to music Tryna pull up Time seems to have stopped Oh that would be my first death I been always afraid of [RM] If this makes me cry no more If you can't make my heart tremble more How could I ever die like this But what if that moment’s right now right now Ps:Black Swan is my favorite song. When I had to end my 25-year career as a contemporary dancer, I felt the same way, and this song comforted me.

The Black Swan History check - the back swan is a character in a ballet called "The Swan lake" by Pjotr Tjajkovskij. It is probable the most famous ballet there is. The lead is a Swan who is a cursed princess, she is the pure one. There is a Prince, can he break the curse? The Black Swan is the fake, an evil entity that is trying to take the "pure" ones place with the prince and it's lika a "tele novella" thing. The role of the swans is danced by the same ballerina who dances the "white swan". The Martha quote is an reference to the dancer who has to die twice on the stage. So I guess they mimicing Swan Lake's story and saying that it is the fake swan that they fear will take over??? Or is it the double deaths of creativity?

Hi Bryan 👋 I just finished watching the video - had to watch in 2 parts as it was a bit late for me the other day when it premiered. Thank you for the video and again going through Doolset. I don't think I've gone through the lyrics to that extent before myself (or at least not for a while) so that was excellent and gave me an even deeper appreciation for the song. Also I think it actually really helps to have someone else go through the lyrics rather that going through it yourself (at least for me). It helps me to process the information and I love getting your own insight and thoughts as you do so. I also want you to know that what you are doing in analysing the lyrics via doolset is so unique. Though some other reactors have mentioned doolset or indicated they have read it, it is rare. I have not seen any other reactors go through Doolset to the extent that you have, going through the lyrics and explanation with it displayed on screen to us as you do. I really do appreciate the time that you are taking to do that. As long as you are happy to do so it would be great to see you continue with that. But as usual it's your channel and journey so it's up to you how you want to do it and what you want to share with us. I understand you can always look at Doolset on your own if that is what you prefer. Also there are certainly some songs, their English ones particularly where Doolset is not necessary. The lyrics and meaning of Black Swan really is beautiful and relatable. I really like all the references to the ocean, the ocean floor, silence being blocked out - given how dark and quiet it is in the depths of the sea the ocean is a perfect metaphor. When you sit and analyse them properly the lyrics have such amazing imagery. I love how the song like many of theirs can be interpreted and applied in different ways. Even though it's intention is about fear of losing a passion for something, I think it can be applied to struggling generally like not feeling like you have a purpose or dream (also covered in BTS's song Paradise) not knowing who you are or just general mental health struggles. I love that you did the dance practice. I have watched the live performances before, but I've never seen the dance practice for Black Swan, so it was my first time watching it too. It was great as you got to see the full performance properly. The MV obviously breaks up the dance as there are different scenes. Live performance are awesome (and there are so many for this song) but it can be harder to see the dance especially if it's filmed on TV and has bad camera work/angles. BTS's dance practices really showcase their skills and many of them also serve as comic relief as they provide a flawless performance while just having a good time such as in their Halloween dance practices. Obviously they are practices in the sense that it's not a formal performance but it is not their first practice of the dance. I see in the comments a couple of people disagreed with doing the dance practice first. Personally I think it's fine and it's interesting to see a reaction to things in different ways. Everyones going to have a different opinion or preference - I mean I've seen people requesting reactors watch live performances including their epic awards show performances before hearing the studio version or seeing the MV and understanding what the songs about, which is not my preference but that's just me. I think it's ok for people to offer their advice and experience, but I don't think theres a right or wrong. In the words of RM 'Do You'. Looking forward to your reaction to the art film performance video. Something very interesting that you may not know at this stage, is the dance performance video was released about a month and a half prior to the MV for the song. To me this is amazing and so unique, no other artist or music Company releases this kind of content or in this way and it gives their audience the chance to experience their content in different ways. The fact that it gave the dance company which performed it, MN Dance Company the chance to show their skills and share their art form with so many different people who would otherwise never see it is so commendable. The dance performance is played out to an Orchestral version of the song which I believe suits the song and lyrics so well. Unfortunately Hybe has never released the orchestral version of the song for streaming. ☹ If you are interested there is also a video (a bangtan bomb) available of BTS watching and reacting to the MN dance performance video for the first time. Heres the link kzbin.info/www/bejne/sIOcomifipKagLc Looks like I'm reiterating what others have said but regarding the Natalie Portman Black Swan movie, I personally wouldn't generally recommend it. I mean there may be some similar themes because I think they are both inspired by the same source material, but I can't see any relevance/reference in the song or MV to the movie Black Swan. The movie was an experience to watch once, it was interesting and I appreciate it for what it was, but will probably never watch it again - it was just a lot. The movie goes pretty crazy 🤪 to me it was more about getting lost or obsessed in your art rather than fear of losing it. The movie revolves around the main character and dance company who are performing the ballet Swan Lake which features a Black and White Swan and I believe the movies story is somewhat inspired by the story of Swan Lake. The movie is also apparently about understudies and the notion of being haunted by a double or doppelganger - I think this relates to the fact that the ballet Swan Lake has the black swan (which is an evil character) and the opposite white swan (the good character). Its a very heavy movie and I think could be described as a horror movie. Its a Darren Aronofsky movie (the director) I've only seen one of his other films (The Fountain which I definetly preferred - very long but interesting), but just from those two ill say they are a lot. It's definetly not a popcorn movie. Ive never seen the ballet Swan Lake but from briefly reading about it, I would say BTS's song may be inspired by the ballet Swan Lake and that the Black Swan could also be representative of Carl Jung's Shadow. So maybe a combination of the two and of course inspired by Martha Graeme's quote - it made sense that you said the Shadow can also be the bad parts of ourselves that we want to hide from people. Maybe it could also be something we want to hide from ourselves 🤔

This music video was filmed at the LA Theater. Black Swan is a famous ballet. BTS song is based around that and on a famous quote by Martha Graham who is a famous dancer : “A dancer dies twice - once when they stop dancing, and this first death is the more painful” - their song Black Swan is about the fear of losing your passion for your art. BTS reflecting on their life as artists being part of a group since they were young teens. This is all they’ve known and what if they no longer want to do this? it’s a form of death. But in the end Suga raps about not letting that fear get to him and you see the dancing shadow go away at the very end of the video. The movie with Natalie Portman is about a ballerina that gets so obsessed with her art form and being the best she ends up destroying herself (going from first dressed in white to going to the dark side and dressed in black as if she sold herself to the devil - just like BTS are dressed in white and black throughout the whole video-GREAT movie by the way).

I highly recommend a live performance. I personally love the Black Swan performance from The Tonight Show the most. It’s completely remarkable how perfectly they sing the song live while doing such difficult choreography. I was lucky enough to see it in person at SoFi and it was phenomenal.

The black swan is the swan in Swan Lake (the ballet) with the troubled soul... the movie is built off this story, so it might be possible to understand the meaning of this song by understanding more about Swan Lake, rather than the Hollywood movie.

11:58 V is definitely the most versatile singer out of all of them he changes his voice to fit in any type of song without losing his baritone rich deep quality , he can do growls too , you can hear 10 different voices from him in one song or performance only so effortlessly ! But he often uses his normal voice that you heard in singularity . Him and Jungkook are absolutely my favorite vocalists
