Local TV News Bulletins capture the depth of dismay at the threatened closure of the ONLY dedicated war veteran's' hospital in the State of South Australia; the Daws Road Repatriation General Hospital, known affectionately as 'The Repat' which was established 73 years ago.
'The Repat' has looked after Australian war veterans from World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Iraq, Timor and Afghanistan and in recent times serviced the loacal comunity and been an annexe of the [News bulletins]
Flinders Medical Centre a large hospital servicing the southern suburbs of Adelaide.
'The Repat' has expertise in medical conditions such as post-traumatic stress disorder which would be lost if the hospital at Daw Park was closed. One veteran gave a graphic account of its impact on him and the gratitude he has for the help The Repat gave him and his family, which would have been too unsettling to be broadcast in prime time. However two veterans attest on camera that it saved their lives and helped their families.
The latter is significant as the sons of Vietnam veterans had a higher mortality rate compared with Vietnam-era personnel from late teenage years to adulthood, largely due to external causes which include car accidents, misadventure and suicide. The underpinning dynamics which give rise to this may well apply to the children of veterans of subsequent conflicts.
