Thank you for sharing this. I've saved it on my video list to complement my Miami history channel.

I also lived in South Beach in the early '90s and I totally agree with you. I was a working artist doing tourist t-shirts and beach towel designs for Disney and Warner Bros. to name just a few. I had a little apartment on Pennsylvania, 2 blocks form the ocean. It was so chill back in those days. The Super Models used to come in during the winter and dance and party with us on the bars at places like Lucy's, The Chilly Pepper and The Deuce Bar. I wrote about it in my book 'Find Your Flow" (available on Amazon and Barnes& Noble) and I included paintings of several of my favorite spots including the lifeguard stands and the old News Cafe'. I left SoBe in '95 and it was never the same after. I saw it coming... the Disney-fication of South Florida. Same thing happened in CoConut Grove and even Key West. Once the big money and the corporate greed sets in, the chill vibe and creative experience disappears like an Ibis before an impending hurricane.

One of my favorite things to do on weekend mornings was head over to the roller skating circle on the beach side of Ocean Drive. I can’t remember the name of the bar/club but there was music and a lot of people getting together and having fun showing off their skating skills. Seems like it was Penrods but that might have been a club in Lauderdale.

Miami is no longer cool, like you said. Just overpriced, over-hyped and over crowded. I say the same thing about Southern California for the same reasons.

You're right Pat. The area is still beautiful, nature and some of the things they have built, but there is no soul, it is all plastic and extremely expensive. Thank you!
