South Beach Sessions is back and whether you love him or hate him, you've never heard Stephen A. Smith like this before. Stephen shares with Dan how despite all the success, growing up in poverty will never leave him and the controversy that still haunts him today. Dan pushes Stephen to address his relationship with the black community, how he handles the haters and imitators flooding the landscape, if he's getting bored with First Take, and where things stand with him, Skip Bayless and Max Kellerman. Stephen also tells Dan how his words of advice and near-death bout with Covid, changed his life forever.
Watch Stephen A. daily on ESPN’s First Take and listen to his weekly podcast, Know Mercy with Stephen A. Smith. His bestseller, Straight Shooter: A Memoir of Second Chances and First Takes, is available now wherever you get your books and audiobooks.

Wow. Stephen A’s recollection of the moment he heard his father say that he isn’t smart enough almost brought me to tears. I guess I remember when I used to get my progress report I was also embarrassed. Such a story. Thank you Dan for uploading this.

Loooongtime listener. I can't express how wonderful this interview was. To have a guest tackle such questions, for Dan having the courage to be frank at the risk of alienating someone dear to him (that's his friend after all), it speaks to many wonderful things, but what hit me among many items was the rapport they have with each other, to be able to HAVE such an interview where Stephen A was comfortable enough, to have such a discussion publicly in a space like a Miami podcast. It speaks to the well founded trust and love they have for each other. Nothing speaks louder than love.. It's special. The only thing I disagreed about, respectfully, was the notion that they couldn't sit across from each other. But I respect how it may not help them with there personal goals.

I think it's interesting that SAS immediately gets defensive when the "I hate what you've done to sports media" comment comes up. He starts the interview off by talking about how he remains true to the tenets of journalism, but his takes consistently lack accountability, fairness and impartiality. He says that his bottom line is to make money but refuses to take accountability for the fact that the brand of entertainment he provides does not stand on the fundamentals of journalism. He tries to make it seem like you can't question his integrity because he was a journalist for decades, but what he's doing now isn't journalism.

Within the first three minutes, SAS talks about the important and necessary role of a father... while saying that his mother filled that role for him, with the result being that he's wildly successful and perhaps the most prominent sports media figure in the country. His own lived experience disproves his beliefs; it's not about having a traditionally male role that is specifically filled by a father/step-father/etc., it's about having loving and supportive adults who work hard to provide the best life they can for you, whatever their gender and relation to you.

I think you missed the point. He talked about resenting his father and explained why. He talked about the importance of men in family's fulfilling their roles. His father's dereliction of his duty caused his mother undue stress because she had to fill his role. His mother did a great job, but it was difficult for her and the family. His father also financially deprived SAS' family because he had a second secret family. The father's lack of involvement also made SAS' path more difficult with his father not believing in him and being there and it was hurtful. Everything you said was true about having a loving parent.

He talks about the weed because in a way he’s scolding players for messing up their money over something really dumb and avoidable. Not because he thinks smoking weed is wrong. SAS can't mention the names of the enemies he says he has? He can't even let LeBatard MENTION the name? Btw, does anyone know who he's speaking about?

Popular guess seems to be Whitlock. Would not surprise me. The background as a journalist-turned-TV guy matches SA's description, too

@@Karafin1 I highly doubt Lebatard has any relationship with Whitlock. He wouldn't be playing mediator in that situation.

@genesmith3582 Maybe. But they used to be pretty good friends. They've both talked about it in the past.

Love Dan and the show but for the life of me I don't understand why people like Steven A

Stephen A.'s right! Kellerman was not a good fit on First Take, mainly because - in my opinion - Max was unable to debate at Stephen A.'s level. When Max co-hosted, First Take was stale, and I often watched the show only to listen to Stephen A.'s take on the first topic, and then I would turn the channel. Though I wish that Stephen A. and Skip were still co-hosting First Take, the show is much fresher with the rotating co-hosts, and I tend to watch First Take longer.
