Well done Eric,,, yes old oil hardens to the consistency of old style varnish. It is a common occurrence in some of the older sewing machines that I service and what works best in my experience to remove it is acetone although be careful as it will dissolve certain paints and plastics.

The only way to know if you are getting a good deal is to really pay attention to the market in your particular area. What I paid for this South Bend in the Seattle area would likely be way too much in the mid west, where these lathes are far more common. I watch my local Craigs List and FaceBook Marketplace daily, so have a very good idea of values. I should also note that If you aren't really quick to respond to a good deal, someone else will get to it first..
