One possible accessory to extend this series is to show the principles of an angled guide fence for clamping on the grinder rest to assist with tools for screwcutting, etc. which need accurate angles. It would be extra credits for many, but some might appreciate the security of working off a guided system.

Just a thought, but maybe the set screw was offset from the groove on purpose. It seems that if you tighten the screw down it would try to push the rotating jig forward locating it with the back face of the dial. This would make for a fixed axial position of the jig when tightened.

The spin indexer will lock into any position on 1 degree increments. The holes labeled 0-9 do that for you. If you want say 32 degrees turn the spindle to 30 degrees put the lock pin in the "2" hole and turn the spindle slightly until it drops in place. It is truly the mechanical equivalent of a vernier scale. You will see the big dial will show a little past 30 which is of course 32 degrees. Thus all 360 increments are readily available. A clever and simple device which is likely more precise than reading a rotary table .

@paulhunt5982 жыл бұрын
Yes, set the "vernier" pin at 5 degree. To speed up the engraving process, index on 10 degrees all the way around and possibly set a hard stop for the mill axis travel. There is no provision on the mill for this, but anything rigid and cheesey could work. After completing the 10 degree steps, repeat process for the shorter 5 degree marks moving the stop and the vernier pin appropriately. I don't own a full set of 5C collets yet, so I did a poor man's trick and purchased a 5C 3 jaw chuck. This allows me to hold any size round stock while I shop for bargain full set of 5C tooling. My 5C chuck has a wee bit of run out (.003"), which works for most of my spin indexing work, but is disappointing. I really like Lyle's cheesy drill press vise trick to set the tool but square. Fast and dirty yet reasonably accurate. I would have used an indicator against the clamped piece of tool bit stock, possibly gotten it more accurate, but my method would have taken much longer. Lyle is clever in doing things simpler when close is good enough. It isn't hard to level a knee mill. Our shop standard was to level manual knee mills to .0005"/ft. I just sheared an assortment of sheet metal shims (I preferred SS) about 4" square. Using a pry bar, rock the machine base to insert required shim. The rough machine base casting and the floor variations allow miniscule adjustment. The weight of a knee mill held our machines in place for an indefinite period of time in a high production environment. I have anchored a mill on a rare occasion, but there must have been an extreme reason why we thought anchoring was necessary. Our machine pilots appreciated leveled knee mills. It was common for them to use the protractor type levels for work set up with a leveled and trusted machine. Experience gives method confidence. Lyle "cheats" on best practices when he has proven a simpler method is good enough. I think that he was scribing with his height gage from his work bench surface instead of a surface plate. If so, on this job that may be acceptable. Obviously a surface plate would be more accurate. I cheat similarly on non critical part center locations, by touching off my known tool diameter and part diameter to calculate center and skipping the edge finder step. I am still using hand dial scales on my mill. I introduce so much error with axis backlash. I set up a travel indicator when I need accuracy. My mill came with a partially malfunctioning DRO. The display got separated in the purchase/delivery. I got used to working without the DRO and never installed and repaired the DRO. In the long run, postponing the DRO installation and repair has been a frustrating option. Most of my machinery was purchased used with used machine issues. Sometimes I live with those issues, because repairs seem unjustified. I recently purchased several brand new shop tools and machines. They are wonderful. I haven't had new equipment in the shop for so long that I forgot how much "some assembly required" and how much packing material causes different setup issues and frustration... But new is vastly better!
@daveticehurst41912 жыл бұрын
@@paulhunt598 Thanks for confirming about using the pin at the 5 degree mark. Trouble is with your idea of going round and doing all the 10 's first. Lyle was marking a Long line every 15 degrees ( 2 short then 1 long ) so your idea would totally confuse him. With regards to fitting a stop, Best idea if you have a solid stop is set it for the long line, then introduce a piece of packing to the length of the short line you want.
@paulhunt5982 жыл бұрын
@@daveticehurst4191 Yes. I confused myself on the degree spacing and you corrected me. I repaired and maintained machine shop equipment, mostly CNC, for most of my career. I got bored with CNC and enjoy learning to manual machine in my retirement hobby life. I was trained and served as a technician, but never formally trained as a machinist. Lyle is a fabulous instructor for someone like me. Someday I hope to meet him in person. My pockets are deeper in retirement than during my working career. I am enjoying exploiting this by tooling up an extensive machine shop for hobby pleasure. We lived so frugally that I was shocked when my wife encouraged me to build my dream shop while I am still young enough to enjoy it. I recently added an American Pacemaker to my lathe inventory. Are those markings imperial or metric?

Silly Arse. They are Degrees.

Not sure radians sit well with indexers! The world would be a better place if they did :-)

Mr. Pete. We're you in fact guilty of overthinking your setup ? You didn't need the clamp and second vice when you drilled the second hole. You didn't need the tool bit inside either. You had established the correct position with your graduations and you had a grub screw to clamp it.

I am saddened you feel your channel is floundering. I have heard other active content providers say the same thing, so maybe it is a bigger trend. Or, YT itself has been picking the winners it wants to win in the algorithm shenanigans

I’m not sure what is happening. I blame it on myself for Producing poor videos of little interest to people. Also, there are many many great creators. But I really do blame some of it on KZbin. They gave lots and lots of support to channels that already have millions of viewers. Almost impossible for new producers to get views.

Mr Pete, I think that if you looked up about D cutters for machine engraving. Such as with pantograph machines. Then looked a bit more at the cutting angles. I'm sure you'll want to simply grind a tiny angle at the tip of that tool you used and then try engraving with it rotating at high speed. Because it looks to me that it's a new D cutter that hasn't been made ready for use yet.

I think I would have engraved the 90 degree marks all the way across.
