Mr Carter I talked to your Admin Chief Kirk and gave him the written explanation. Like all incidents it was easily avoidable. Contributing factors.... It was along day, sun was going down. Missed steps, move the 550 first or straighten the wheels on the Volvo and pull out slowly. Lessons learned. Sorry about the trucks, I'll touch up the paint and bolt the tiedown back on. Brian

@@eastterminalrailway5975 It's all good. Like you said, lessons learned and no major damage to man and mechanical. For what it's worth, a couple of weeks after I got my certification as an engineer in 1990, I managed to derail a two-bay covered hopper loaded with silica sand on a 10 mile branch line. My train? One SW-1 switcher and that ONE car in a curve with a speed restriction of 10 mph which I took it at almost 20 mph! When the Trainmaster saw that car with all wheels in the dirt and the trail of chewed up ties, I got the lecture on acting like I was in the Indianapolis 500 and not paying attention to slow orders. Me, being the green-horn, had to quip, "On the bright side, the engine made it through..." ...The next morning, I got called on the carpet for the speed violation (and probably for bad timing with the joke). A week on the sofa cured me of being over-confident with train handling and being a joker with an official. Lesson learned!

Good Morning Brian. As much as I admire your determination and your desire to see this through alone, please consider this viewpoint: just because someone wants to help doesn't equate to wanting part of the spoils. Case in point: I have a very dear friend that has operated a sole proprietorship small engine shop for over 15 years; he started by walking out of a hostile work environment and started with only the toolbox and a small shop. People believed in him and not only were flexible in terms of the rent, but I have helped him the entire time, seeking nothing but his success. This is not to pat myself on the back but to show there are those out there that also want to see the Dream come true and are willing to support in whatever way they can, asking for nothing but the success of the endeavor. My friend was recently hospitalized with chest pains'; when he was able to speak he asked his wife to make 2 calls, one to one of his children and the other to me. While it was touch and go for a while, he has recovered. The point of this is, don't think those wanting to help are seeking a tangible return for themselves. Thanks and sorry for the long rant.

I don't think Brian's point was seeing others as getting part of the spoils. This is about his personal goal, he has set for himself and his son the task of rebuilding this RR, filming it, and thereby setting an example for others, that with grit and determination, you too can accomplish giant tasks. If he allowed others to help It would indeed get the job done, but he would not be true to himself or to his original goal.

@@MrBNARick Dear All, Thank you for your comments but my point was this: Brian and Graham are determined to see this through, win, lose or draw and are not seeking any outside help. Judging by past comments on this channel there are many that also share that goal and want to support in various ways; not all necessarily with physical labor like MS Hum 53 states. I wasn't very clear but my intent was that many want to see them succeed and I for one would like to provide some financial support realizing that, like any stock play, might result in a loss, but would realize that going in. Agree 100% with MS Hum53's assessment about laywers and osha and all that fallout. Hope this makes the previous comment a bit clearer.

Never hurts to have a good relationship with another railroad. Case in point, years back I needed a used switch (new ones were sky high) to drop a new 1/4 mile spur for a warehouse siding into a chemical plant I managed. We already had two similar-sized sidings and we'd often allow the local Class II Short-line to push cars onto our track for free storage over weekends and the like. Long story short, they sold us all the used rail and ties we needed for the new track at a great price, and said, "Hey, we've got an old switch you can have if you want it. You sign a release of liability and it's yours." That was in '98 and it's still in use today. Love the videos Bro...

Theirs that lovely liability word, i had to fill out a liability form in length from my boss who has known me for 20 years just to remove an old oak desk from the roundhouse foremans office then after I had the desk out and hauled away he asked me how I did it I said I removed about 12 screws, he said I didn’t know it was screw together or I would have took it home, i just laughed, double sided desk secretary sat at the other side…..the way things are today, i wouldn’t even ask for anything today….

The fact that there’s a need to store cars on the ETR just goes to show that the industries in that area need more rail access even if it’s just an extra yard for storing rail cars, the ETR might find itself in a profitable position to become a 3rd party car holder facility like in the OTR trucking world companies make a fortune having secure lots to store companies trailers and semis

Rent / but yourself a gas powered log chipper, mount it on the p-way trolley, then you can use the grab on the truck to load the chipper and just throw it back to the side a mulch. The bonus is the layer of chip will stop the smaller weeds growning

And getting a chipper will save you a lot of time (hence money) because you can chip it on the spot, hence no loading / unloading / reloading of the wood. You’ve got a shitload of trees and brush to get rid off. Get smart and get a chipper

It would be much easier to use a gas powered power saw on the small trees get them down low so they won't be along the tracks this summer. Much quicker! Need to be careful! I find this very rewarding that you and your son purchase this rail and in one year nearly have it ready to go for car storage. Just a few new ties here and there and you should be in business late spring. Big snow coming end of this week will slow down rail work plenty of ice I hear coming in Ohio. Take care stay safe

I understand your feelings about not taking donations... that's one thing that I have noticed is different from the general attitude in Australia, where I grew up. Sometimes I'll see signs on businesses, saying 'I built this completely by myself, without any outside help'... my first thought is 'that's sad, didn't you have any mates to lend a hand and help you?'. In Australia, if you were doing the same as what you're doing with the ETR, your neighbours and friends would be around, lending a hand, because, well, you're a mate, and we help out our mates whenever we can. It doesn't take away from what you've achieved, but it's the community saying 'we will help you, we will stand by you no matter what.'.

I would strongly suggest a small folding saw always carried in truck , along with an axe , a hatchet , a file, sharpening stone, machete ,bow saw, if you are going to do it right do it right. I have cleared tons of fence rows on my brothers farm for over 40 years. When you get big stuff done ,rent a tractor if you don't have one on the inventory and a big brush cutter and level everything along each side of tracks . My brother has a mower deck that cuts up 10in stumps like hot butter , golf course afterwards,lol. Well done.

Now that was awesome. Hey Brian I have been following the Mass Colony Railroad that runs from Taunton Mass to Cape Cod. They just rebuilt the Fall River section. Which was the New Haven Railroad. For the MBTA. And they are working on the Taunton to Framingham line. Which CSX Has sold to the Mass Colony. Boy, you and your son have come a long way. And the trucks have paid for themselves. Keep up the good work. And G&W owns the P&W and the New England Central. And there is a town called Palmer where CSX, Mass Central, and the New England Central all meet. It is about 75 miles west of Boston. But sometimes I go there to film. Whoever owned the boom truck before you got her. Took good care of her. She has a lot of mileage left and a-lot of work to do

Have you thought of buying a brush cutter for the hydraulic arm. Then you could cut using it horizontally or vertical. Going over the stuff that needs trimmed or cut twice chops it up and you could just leave it to rot.

rear speaker All I know is we used a brush cutter on a high rail truck with an hydraulic arm just like the one in this video. They could trim the limbs vertically and the brush horizontally. I know it can be done with the arm on the high rail truck. It’s the way we trimmed our main line and our branch lines. I would think they could use the hydraulics for the grapple to control the position of the brush cutter. Them probably an Aux hydraulic supply to run the blades or rotors.

I know the satisfaction of clearing it yourself. I clean up the alley right away behind our house. On the opposite side of alley it goes down a hill. Keeping the trees cut back and grass cut. One suggestion the grapple is great I used to be a logger I have had experience what kills me is watching you bend over for all the little brush. Just amazing the progress made in the year and handful of months since a video of a father son team popped up on my feed standing in front of an Amazon rain forest level thicket of brush with a couple of rails running into it saying they were going to run a railroad. Have hung on every episode since and glad to see that work paying off. For a brief second that upcoming episode preview message made my heart fall thinking oh no not the 2021 but quickly remembered that other part of your line of work and figured it's another 50 tonner going to that great rail yard beyond. Aside from the generally more available lemon, orange, etc try the peach/apricot Lacroix and I think they may have a pomegranate Lacroix as well.

Maybe you could consider running a siding off of the J lead instead of rebuilding it. Other than more storage space the building off of it could theoretically just be serviced off a short spur of the 700 if needed. Less investment needed that way. Running a siding instead from the J lead down to the next switch, giving ample space to run the 2021 around any cars to be stored/delivered on the south end.

And a siding could work for pulling one particular car that needs to be pulled out of storage which I've seen done on many other railroads were they didn't have a siding and they had to pull out a whole bunch of cars way down the Rail to spit put select cars needed for customers.

I hope that you guys get yearly checks for Lyme disease since you are working outside in the brush. I got a bullseye rash on my right upper arm between 1982 and 1984. I experienced a lot of health problems and finally 30 years later I was finally diagnosed with chronic Lyme disease in 2013.

The plastics plant is not on the ETR rails. The plastics plant is actually its own spur with rails that go in to the building. ETR's rails connect to the plastics plant spur which eventually connects to the main.

I researched this line when they first started uploading almost a year ago. I estimated that if they got permission to use all of the customer sidings, they could store approximately 50-70 cars on the line. Without the customer sidings it's a lot less. Probably 35-50. The mainline is half a mile long, about 2600 ft. That length doesn't include sidings.

I see many gallons of Ortho "ground clear" in your future. Where I used to live I had a power line about 400 feet behind me. The company used to take a hatchet and make a few cuts into the sides of trees and then another guy would come after him and use a brush to "paint" the vegitation killer into the wound. They would then spray it on the ground. It worked really well and after everything died (meaning the roots and all) they'd come in with a coupld machines and shred everything that was left. ( I used to get lots of firewood that way and they didn't care).

Hello my Friend. Love your channel. I appreciate the concept of a father and son working together to make a dream happen. However there are these things called chainsaws and brush chippers that drastically diminish the workload and toll on old bodies like mine and yours. I now they are new fangled and akin to cheating but man do they speed up the process and not wear you out like loppers..................LOL

Another entertaining video. This gave the best idea yet of how much brush and vegetation there is to be removed. Good job and much work to come. I enjoy the video and even the music. In order to make the Welland Canal flow better it may take help from the city to ensure Death Valley doesn't go under water in the spring. Seems like the water should flow to the stream to the east. Everything starts with an idea and a person willing to do the work. The ETR and many other similar organizations are examples of what makes America great. Press on! Your continued success is contagious and attractive to everyone.

I love what you guys are endeavoring. Maybe consider ratchet strapping your plywood to you vertical supports on the grapple to avoid easily knocking them down during all of the loading/ unloading. Relatively quick and easy.

Great video and great work. I love the progress you have made. I run a truck very similar for a city picking up brush and junk off the side of the road. Those grapple trucks are a work saver.
