A very snakey outing in South Carolina, where we find over 40 snakes under tin in a few hours before getting rained out! The only new species for the episode was an unusual South Carolina Slimy Salamander sharing tin with a pair of Copperheads.

What a large number of copperheads, geez!!! Mind blowing how many there were lol! I do have to say though that the dog was a pretty big distraction for me in the video. I've always struggled with anything that has heavy or raspy breathing (my own self included), so it could just be me. I also found thinking about the what ifs on the likelihood of the dog getting too close to one of the snakes. Idk, I guess what I'm trying to say is that if it were me, I would never bring, or allow a dog to go with me field herping lol. Great video otherwise; keep up the awesome work!!!

When I was about 13, I was fishing in this little pond in Bradenton FL, circa 1977. I felt something on my bare left foot, I look down, and there's a huuuge cottonmouth head resting on my toes!!! I was scared sh!tless! I didn't breathe for about 2 minutes, until it slithered up and over my foot, and disappeared into the brush!

I always love you vlogs. Please linger a bit longer on each find the go pro zipped over many so fast I often could not spot what you were seeing on my computer without pausing it. In real time there I know they were easy to see. I'm struck by how much the Coppers remain still and rely on their camo-skins to remain unseen, when the other snakes you uncovered were often more reactive. Here in CA we don;t have those beauties.

Here in NE Oklahoma it’s a similar thing, ‘cept we get more rat snakes than copperheads. But you still have probably a 1/3 chance of finding a snake under a piece of tin. Me and my dad one time was doing roofing in a chicken house we were building, and there was a 5-6’ rat snake underneath it. I never in my life had I seen him so scared up until that point. He dropped that tin and screamed. And this is a 49 year old grown man. I used a fire poker we had outside to lift the tin up, cuz he wasn’t able to identify it so he just said “snake” and he pointed it out to me under the tin. And when I grabbed it he looked at me like I was holding fire in my hands.

Funny story, I live near where you flipped today. I have a big aquarium and one day I cleaned it and did a water change. I replaced the ornamental rocks[ hollow store-bought rocks] I kept the replacement rock outside on my back porch. A few weeks later I did another water change. When I picked up the fake rock in my aquarium a copperhead came out of the rock and smelled very awful. He was decentergrating from being in my tank underwater for a few weeks. Had to completely remove everything and super clean it my tank.😩

Those are certainly beautiful snakes. I read that Lowcountry copperheads are desirable for antivenom production as it is often more toxic that in other parts of the southeast. The slimy was really cool and I learned from this video that they changed the name...lol... P. glutinosus was such a great descriptive scientific name. Its been a pretty decent year so far here in the Lowcountry of SC! There must be a lot of chow for those snakes!

A lot of the old tin in South Carolina (especially in the Low Country) are remnants of Hurricane Hugo that made landfall in 1989 around Charleston and proceeded all the way north to Charlotte, NC. Hundreds of barns, cabins and old buildings were destroyed. The tin was generally part of a roof system that was torn apart by the hurricane and dropped in various locations.

If I'm not mistaken, every piece of tin had at least 1 copperhead, with multiples under most. I know that metal acts as a heat sink for the snakes, but I wonder why it's predominantly copperheads that love metal? My father had a scrap pile at his trucking company when I was growing up, and from time to time our mechanics would dig around for a piece of metal or part in it, and you had to be careful, because you could usually count on multiple copperheads.

I sure do wish you would also take the precaution of Leather Gloves when you know you are in an area this populated by venomous snakes. It's weird. I live in Tennessee and I bet I see anywhere between a half dozen to a a couple of dozen snakes in a given year. Most of them are chicken/rat snakes. A few corn snakes. A few racers. A bunch of grass/garter snakes. However, I only rarely see copperheads . I know they're here and I'll bet they are quite numerous. It'd be a great environment here... lots of woods, nearby creek, and a somewhat nearby river. I just don't see them very often. I think I've only seen one rattlesnake my entire life and that was a few counties over. I watch these guys herp and I just shake my head. It's not like I'm in a much different environment, especially when they're out in N. Georgia. I dunno why I find it so strange but I do, maybe it's because it just seems like such a perfect environment for them. Anyway, good vid. Thumbs up. Oh, and for the record, I love chicken snakes and love when I see a bunch in a season because they absolutely keep rodent populations down. Makes it less work for me during the spring and fall to get rid of mice and moles. Just wish they'd help keep the squirrel population down. The rodents have been doing a number on our barn.

Too fast with the filming. Had to pause it quite a bit to even see the snakes. Interesting vlog though.

You actually missed a copperhead and one minute and 24 seconds on the left-hand side of the screen there is one hiding under the leaves all you can see is his head so his nose in his one eye look just below the branch look a little left from the middle of the screen I will try to send a picture to your Instagram highlighting his head

I'm just curious - all of these sheets of tin look the same. Are these sheets of tin that you've placed out in order to attract snakes?

Do you do anything with the snakes you find or do you just leave them and go on your merry way?
