That vault door is for water. What it does is it creates a water tight seal preventing water from flooding the station again.

Inner loop is a part of the old nyc South Ferry station. It once was the platform for the shuttle train, which ran from bowling green on the 4/5 line to the south ferry inner loop platform on the 1/9 line. Bowling green shuttle was discontinued in 1977. South ferry outer loop, which belonged to the 1/9 trains, was discontinued as well some years ago due to the new south ferry station being built. The new station can hold the entire train whereas the old station can only hold 4 cars of the train. Hope I answered your question 🚉

inner loop was used a part south ferry station on the IRT Lexington line (outer loop is IRT Broadway-7th av). Nowaday, this loop is turn over for the "5" trains in weekend or non rush hour time.

The station still remains operational for the most part. The only difference is that we use it for storage now instead of using it for customer service. However, the station has been set up so that in the event that we may need to use the station for customer service, we still have the option to.
