Hi Nancy, glad that you toured our country. Hope the expedition was enjoyable at the least. But the way the poor were made the subjects of attention throughout the first half of the video- disheartening. The guide's commentary was so lit lool

Adithya, I did not feel we visited the poor just because they were poor. It's a different way of life and that is what traveling is supposed to be about - broadening your mind and experiencing different cultures. What I got out of the visit is that as we supposedly "advance" in our society we lose some things that are really important. Kids nowadays, for example, would not even be able to play as a group the way the kids in this family were, because they need some kind of toy, ball, or computer game to connect with each other. They can get many gifts for the holidays and still be upset and unhappy because they may not have gotten the very top technology. The "poor' kids as they are called, needed absolutely nothing to laugh and have fun. It makes you think twice about which ones are really the lucky ones, and that we have to be careful about what we think we want out of life. Not that I would not want this family to do better financially; they work hard and I wish them success. In that sense, I hope our visit helped in a very small way. Even though they received us as welcome guests, I believe they were compensated for receiving tourists. It was fun for us, and I believe it was fun for them as well. A very enjoyable cultural exchange.

I'm really sorry people have been offended by the terminology. Our guide explained to us that he uses the term because that way it is easier for us foreigners to understand what he is saying. He does not condone the practice and does not consider the people untouchables. He was just explaining that that was how it was in the past regarding the jobs people were "cast" into, and that while there were still some problems, attitudes have changed in many areas of the country. We, visitors, in no way viewed Tamilnadu in a less way because of this issue. It's a beautiful place with warm, welcoming people, and we loved every minute of our visit.

Nancy,it is not the visitors we are complaining about. I just recently visited Tamilnadu, and saw with my own eyes how the dreaded caste system still plays a profound role outside the cities. In the villages people still live in separate colonies. I am more angry with the guide who, instead of explaining the issues correctly, took the lazy path to clump them as untouchables. Thanks for your explanation.

It doesn't mean anything to say that someone is Indian -- it's a nationality with all racial groups represented within its fold -- including Caucasians, Blacks (the Siddis), Asians, tribal groups that look Asian and mixed Indians that are a combination of the aforementioned, just like Latin America. There are a few Communities that are like Castizos or White Latin Americans and they look Middle Eastern/Caucasian as they have minor SEA Asian admixture. My family members and I look White/Caucasian and no one believes when we tell them we are from India thanks to the mass immigration of these admixed Mestizo Indians like Aziz Ansari, Mindy Kaling, Kal Penn et al, who have distorted the perception of Indians so much that people think Indians have a uniform look and are always the furthest thing from Caucasian, when a genetic test showed that our family is ~85% West Asian/Caucasian, Most Indians are around ~50% (some even less) and are thus mixed. South Indians and East Indians are also the darkest groups in India, and much darker than NW Indians on average, regardless of caste, as they are highly admixed with SE Asians. If you compare the average skin color of North Indian Upper Caste individuals to South Indian Middle and lower and even upper castes, they will be much lighter on average than South Indians. South and East Indians have a lower frequency of the gene for lighter skin due to admixture and selection over generations. Furthermore, people in the South are a completely different race from Upper Caste NW Indians and possess a different countenance and different physiognomy -- their skull, facial features and bone structure, along with their physique and skin and hair textures are markedly different from Northern and North Western Indians. BTW if you really want to observe the diversity of race in India, look up these seven people on KZbin in succession: Nikki Haley (Caucasian NW Indian); Mamta Banerjee (Bengali - Mongoloid East Indian); Asha Rangappa (Tamil - South Indian Dravidian aka the 'classic Indian look' for the ignorant); Neil Nitin Mukesh (Caucasian NW Indian); Smriti Irani (Gujarati-- West Indian aka the Mestizo looking Patels that form the bulk of the diaspora here in the US and the world over). Rohit Bal (Caucasian North Indian Hindu with Blonde hair) and finally Pria Kataria Puri (Another Caucasian NW Indian that is not well represented at all in the Indian diaspora and passes for Caucasian/White here and elsewhere), the point is India is not a race, but a nationality and people in the North West range from Blonde haired and Blue eyed and White skinned to olive and light brown, while people in the South are mostly medium brown to Black with some that are light olive if Middle or upper caste. They also look completely different -- from Caucasian in the North to Dravidian Asian in the South and East Asian in the East. So please stop calling these people 'Indian' it doesn't mean anything to people who live in India unless you specify their ethnic group.

TBC1987 Thank you so much for the very detailed comment! It's the same here in the US as well with the diversity. We consider all people that are nationals of the country to be Americans, no matter what their heritage. We all maintain our individual identities though. For example, I was born in Greece. I speak Greek at home and gravitate to Greek food and entertainment. But I am still an American (and proud of my Greek heritage 😊).

Nancy Ioannidis Hellas! I love Greek food and culture as well, particularly Greek mythology and architecture. The Greeks also have a rich history of trade and cultural exchange with the NW Indians ever since Alexander the Great and his men made contact with the kingdoms in the NW of India. There are also some Greeks that look like upper caste NW Indians due to our shared Mediterranean heritage. Thank you for your open mindedness and visit NW India when you get a chance.

Positive: Nice documentary Negative: Guide You have missed a lot of interesting places in and near Chennai, Government museum in Egmore, Guindy monuments, Muttukaadu boat house and crocodile farm, Dakshinachirta in OMR, pulicat lake etc instead the guide has wasted your groups time in showing poverty etc you we’re there on tourism not on a cleaning mission I believe. Please visit the above places if you go next time.

Thanks for your reply, Chennai is typically not a tourist city anyway but I remember the days when I used to take students from Semester at Sea (US) around Chennai about 20 years ago. It seems you have covered fair bit of the South in your other documentaries anyway. Ooty and Kodaikanal are very nice places to relax too.

Yes, I was very happy with the trip, but I know there are many many more beautiful places to visit. You sound like you have great knowledge of the area. Best way to learn something is to try to teach it, and that probably holds true for guiding your own groups ☺️

Mahesh Ranganathan Sorry to hear that Mahesh... We foreigner travelers already know about the cast system and the other problems facing the country, so he is not giving away any secrets. It's good to be open because that is how change comes about. The cast system served a purpose for many many years; now that it is not needed anymore we need to help people change the way they think. Change like that is never easy and doesn't happen overnight, but South Indian people are great and the issue will one day be only history.
