Hey Guys, if you are still travelling south in the south island, consider stopping for the night at Tekapo (hopefully it is a clear night). theres a dark sky sanctuary around there (no light pollution). the night sky up there in the mountains is incredible to just lie back, stare up and admire. truly does show you just how small we are on our rock in space. love that you guys are enjoying our country so much.

My unsolicited advice for Tia, as someone who has had back issues for years (since scoliosis as a teenager) is: work on building up your core muscles, abdominals and back muscles, which will in turn cushion your spine and hold it in alignment, to feel less pain, twists and twinges. I noticed this massively when I started working with a personal trainer… I have almost no back pain, twists and twinges now since working out for a year. As travellers, I don’t think gyms are necessary with the amount of videos and fitness apps online to help you target some daily core routines to add to your already very active lifestyle hiking around this amazing world😊. However, if you’re ever in place for a week or two, I think it’s worth it to pay for 1-2 one-on-one sessions with an expert to get you on your way properly (correctly) with a tool-kit to work on eliminating your back issues, during your travels.

Very evocative video thanks again. Gosh the glacier has receded heaps since I was there in the late 80's when I could easliy walk up to it. It was dirty with gravel and crushed rock at the face but when you looked into it you could see this deep, deep blue clour. I seem to remember it making a creaking sound. Stay safe, Melb Si

Back in the 80's we walked on the glacier which was way down the valley. It was so warm walking (with ice boots and a pointed staff) that half way through we were down to tshirts and wishing we could take them off. Walking through brilliant blue ice caves which would form overnight and be gone a day or so later. Magic! Enjoy the rest of the country. I was 18 and left South Austraia on a working holiday in NZ and returned almost 6 years later. The Pancake Rocks seem to be fenced off now. We laid on them back them, and sat on them eating our lunches. 40 years brings a lot of changes, just saying.

It's the super high rainfall and rapid descent of those glaciers that allow them to exist so close to rainforest. Between 6 and 12 metres a year of precipitation. If snowfall is 10 times rainfall, thats up to 120 metres of snow feeding the galcer annually.

It's a shame to see how far the Franz Josef Glacier has receded. When I first visited New Zealand in 1982 the glacier came nearly down to the car park (well, a few hundred metres away) and now it appears to be a kilometre and a half away. I remember travelling with a friend and we had seen seals on the west coast and then, later that day, we visited the glacier. We walked right up to it. As we returned to the car park, an American tourist commented "Is there a spa up there?" because we were wearing T-shirts and shorts. Ah, it's a beautiful country! Have fun guys!

Tia, regarding your back, I had a similar problem when I was younger. Regular yoga practice cured it suddenly ( not gradually as you’d expect ). Bad news is it took about 10 years! Since you mentioned it started after an accident I’d suggest finding a good chiropractor ( they are all very different ) to re align your spine. I felt that happen when I got better, and although yoga is wonderful in practice you probably would like a faster result than I had. However I’m 67 now and never have a sore back anymore so I don’t regret doing it the slow way! Wishing you can overcome this soon and keep making your wonderful videos without having to suffer being called a grandma.

I come from Marlborough and used to work in Franz Josef. I cannot believe how far back the glacier has gone back! When I was there it was coming forward 1-2m per day and you could walk to the bottom in about 40mins or less. When you come back up from the Haast side, there is a beautiful little walk at Ship Creek (say that fast 5 times) and it has a beach walk and a forest walk that are super easy but so lovely. The beach one is perfect at sunset and the forest one is lovely whatever the day - raining it's amazing! I love the West Coast scenery! Mountains, Lakes, bush, birds etc. I can't remember if you what path you are taking next - I think it's over to Christchurch. I went on a couple of university trips around the Mt Cass area- just on the otherside of Arthur's Pass township. I have very fond memories of that whole area too!

Toured all of NZ in the early 90's in a hire motorhome (that was fun) & the south island just blew us away how stunning it is. Did the fast jetboat rides up the rivers & helicopter ride to land on top of the Fox Glacia (epic), thermal hot springs, pools, tubs in Hanmer & Lake Tekapo & Onsen which is also a must (especially soothing for Tia's back) and Larnach Castle is a must do (epic). Milford Sound & the Te-Anau glow-worm caves and Arrowtown also a must. There are so many stunning hiking trails in the Sth Island it literally blows you away. Make sure you take your time & soak it all in without rushing around is my advice as there is so much to see. One of the crown jewels on this planet for sure - enjoy (especially Queenstown spend plenty of time there)
