Around a month or so ago raw sewage flooded the basements of hundreds of houses in that area. In some cases it was over six inches deep. The city said, "Not our fault, it's because people keep pouring cooking oil down their drains." People got outraged, and then the city did a 180 and said, "Okay, it was because an old sewer pipe collapsed, which we knew all along, we just made up that cooking oil story."

These are the streets that produced the Infamous Supreme Team( Supreme and his murderous Nephew Prince...Bimmy, Black Just, Green Eyed Born) the Corley Brothers, Ronnie Bumps, the Nichols Organization( Fat Cat... Glaze Gibbs...Pappy Mason and the Bebos Posse), 50 Cent and G-Unit, Onyx, Ali Vegas, Nicki Minaj, The Lost Boyz, Pharoah Monche, Skip To My Lou, Lamar Odom and Wacka Flocka. These streets were so vicious that on February 26, 1988, rookie police officer Edward Byrne was killed while guarding the house of a witness in a drug-related trial. Byrne's murder and other violent crime in the neighborhood led South Jamaica to become a symbol for the national drug epidemic, and the city's war on drugs instigated by Mayor Ed Koch. Following the killing, Koch created the Tactical Narcotics Team (TNT) program, with the first team dispatched to South Jamaica on March 14, 1988.

South Queens in general has improved a lot in the past few decades. Sidewalks and roads were rebuilt and are well maintained. Gangs that were roaming the streets in the 90s and early 2000s aren't there anymore. There's increased NYPD presence at night (although, this has been happening since Bill di Blasio was in office). Most of the houses and buildings are over 100 years old and the public schools aren't that great, but those are some of the only downsides. It's also a great location for short commutes to Manhattan and Long Island. Overall, a good place to be, with fantastic access to amenities if you can find housing there.
@Qrec12 Жыл бұрын
Bloomberg increased NYPD in high crime areas, stop and frisk, and it worked. Diblasio deserves no credit at all, he left the whole city in worse shape than when he took it. With all the people and tax revenue leaving NY, crime rising again, and the illegal migrant crisis depleting resources in the city, it's areas like this that get effected the worse.
@SnakePlissken001 Жыл бұрын
@@Qrec12 Well, I lived in this neighborhood, I can tell you there's almost zero housing for anyone - let alone an influx or recent migrants. And despite the neighborhood's old, ghetto appearance, it's more middle-class and white collar. This isn't a low-income community. I think the surrounding regions like Orange and Dutchess will have to take in some of the migrants in eventually.
@Qrec12 Жыл бұрын
@@SnakePlissken001I’m from this area, and now live in Flushing. South Jamaica is pretty much one of the last choices for people when looking for housing, since most of NYC got gentrified and the cost of living skyrocketed. South Jamaica is affordable compared to the rest of Queens and BK. Jamaica in general has always been considered middle class, doesn’t mean it’s not a high crime area and it has a reputation for that even if it has gotten better throughout the years. Everything that is happening now in nyc and in the country has consequences, areas like this are more vulnerable when times get rough, time will tell.
@SnakePlissken001 Жыл бұрын
@@Qrec12 I think South Bronx has Jamaica beat when it comes to lower rent and housing, but no one in their right mind should ever move there if they can help it. I've also heard that most of the ghetto people from these parts have been moving into Newburgh and other places along the Hudson Valley once they got pushed out of affordable housing in NYC. As for the migrants, the City's definitely got a problem, but most of NYC is already out of affordable rental options. So, I just can't see them flooding Jamaica and other areas - unless there's some new buildings somewhere being built for them. There's just no room to house them.

I am just a young white man visiting from Europe and I booked my airbnb in this neighbourhood by accident. Was a bit of a shock to see everything looking pretty trashed. Also I was the only white man in the area which felt strange and made me realize how some black men can feel in my country. Anyhow I had no problems and the stay was fine.

Being from watts, California and moving to south Jamaica from between 2006-2008 I could honestly say I f****** loved my whole experience out there frfr….we first moved to 165 & linden 2 blocks away from the infamous “Supreme team” projects to a few blocks down off 167 and guy r. Brewer….i made it my purpose to visit all 5 Burroughs as the New Yorkers would say but I spent most of my two & 1/2 years out there in between south Jamaica and Brooklyn in the Marcy’s (jay z hood) cuz I have family in there as well but most of my time was spent in south Jamaica…..what I miss the most from out there is the snow, them corner store chicken cutlet sandwiches and Jamaica avenue……oh them were the days for a west coast nigga lol….shout out my south Jamaica niggaz from the 40 Ps, Basleys, and rochsdale projects y’all showed me BIG love

I grew up in Queens during a time when young children could walk from block to block and eat grilled hotdogs & burgers from total strangers and not worry about getting kidnapped. I grew up in Queens during a time when we created fashion from head to toe, the Pirate hats, Lee Jeans, Suade Pumas, and gold name belts. My generation helped create an entire culture that created hip hop, roller skating, Graffiti, and partied with 2 turntables, a Gemini mixer, and a mic. We created the breakdance Cypher when people use to gather in a circle rooting for their rock steady Crews. My generation is special, 70s babies I salute each and every one of you. Southside!
