The way I see it, this is retribution. Korea has a tendency of crapping on anyone and every country they deem beneath them economically, and now this is happening, and has for the past several years. Only now are they starting to wake up and notice, which may be too late. And most foreigners there tend to leave eventually after seeing the "dark side" which doesn't help either. Enjoy whatever time you have left before the ship sinks. Korea's living proof that haste makes waste.

@@xanderp3325this is the case for every western country without immigration, it’s just masked with immigration. south Korea has not had anywhere the immigration of western countries. First world countries are not rewarding motherhood. It is nothing to do with anything else. To have more than 3 children you should have the option to be a full time mother. It’s not an option for most women who want to be full time mothers. It’s far easier to get women who already have and want more children to have children than women that complain about life and have no children. Until this is addressed it’s simply extinction for first world countries.

Well if that's 17k per kid it gets pretty expensive to subsidize that program. And by 2 years old is usually when parents feel more comfortable with getting a daycare so they can get back to work so it's a fairly good compromise. Wish all countries with low birth rates had these programs.

First of all LOVE the sarcasm 😂 Second, the government need wage slaves, they don't really care about you, as if we didn't know that already. That may delay the fall in birthrate, but the trend will continue. I live in a country with high living standards, short working hours, long vacations, highly subsidized childcare (free for single/low income parents), housing subsidies, paid maternity leave, paid sick-leave, universal healthcare and government funded education. The birthrate isn't as low as in SK, but it is low and falling rapidly.

I think I was 12 when I started hearing about this, now I’m 25. Their government doesn’t want to change, it doesn’t care about their people. So there is no reason for us to keep talking about it. Just move on man talk about something new already. It's not just South Korea, it's the path all the developed world is taking. Birth rate is also very low, and getting lower and lower, in all of Europe, in Russia, in Japan, in North America. It's partly due to the high cost of living in the city. It's also due to women being pushed to uni studies, and pursuing financially rewarding careers. At that point, they have "criteria" for men. Earning more than they do is one of them. The more women study, the more single women out there. We can also blame the promotion of the culture of materialism. Unfortunately, all these financial incentives by governments to boost birth rates will only show very mild improvements. Russia is trying that approach too for the same reasons. The solution is to operate a radical society change : exit the cities, promote a more rural lifestyle, help young people have access to property, reward women who have several children (like Germany did in the 30s), discourage women from studying and joining the work force.

You don’t need 150,000 KRW shirts. No matter how affordable it is parents will put a lot of their budget toward child and education costs. It’s just what people do there. Now everyone has dozens of shoes, free education, accesssible doctors when no strike, rice and year round produce. When food scarce, they charged for middle school and some kids didn’t have one pair of shoes they had 6 kids. Now they can’t have 2?

What's the logical reasoning behind such question? Just curious, you're wondering if women were FORCED to choose to do one would they prefer getting pregnant most likely with a person they don't love (due to pressure) adding a human being to a miserable life, and potentially dying giving birth, or joining the military that is rampant with corruption, bullying by superiors and potential sexual harassment? Like why do you hate women? Because in my head I can't fathom entertaining such a question if one doesn't harbor I'll feelings against women
