Did the episode about the aftermath of the 2008 election air the night after? They literally had the South Park version of people behind Obama during his speech. Oh, and that would be a great episode to react to, just for the line about 2008 being the "most divisive election in US history".

One episode they begged the producer not to send to Comedy Central they said they knew it would ruin South Park if it aired. It was "Make love, not warcraft." One of the most beloved episodes ever. They just hold themselves to such an insane standard but that's what makes them great at their jobs.

I've watched almost every late-night interview with Matt and Trey since the beginning of South Park when I was in high school. This documentary shows the minds in action, giving a lot of insight to why they make the show the way that they do. Outside of that, the early interviews with Matt and Trey on Jay Leno in the late 90s were outrageous. The reason why Matt and Trey singled out certain Hollywood types from the get-go is very interesting, sometimes stemming from these types wanting to be a guest on South Park but demanding their parts be huge or outlandish. Trey or Matt would offer some a part to play a cat or dog in the show and this offended A TON of actors. Jay Leno was one of the few who accepted such a meager opportunity early on. Almost everyone else became targets for the show's most cruel jokes. *Ahem* ...Matt Damon...

The show is always evolving, in season 19 they introduced season-long overarching plots. I've been watching since the beginning and this was the start of the modern (and IMO best) era.

I got to see them since the beginning and it’s sooooo hard to say which season is the best. Definitely around 3-6 it started to grow to a different level and then it kept going and now it’s a completely different thing (while being the “same”). But even the first season has golden episodes that hold up to other greats, imo. Also, the movie (which is from the early days) is FUCKING AMAZING

The story of them at the Oscars was always a fave of mine. I remember watching them that night and just laughing. Matt in the Gweneth Paltrow dress and Trey in the iconic JLo one. Learning they were on acid was just the icing on the cake.

In recent years, documentaries have been my favorite thing to watch and I kind of wish there was a full length or docuseries on Matt and Trey. They're just so fascinating. As far as best seasons go, I think 5 to 11 is peak in terms of stretch. I think if I had to force myself to pick two, I'd say 7 and 8 are the best. Season 2 is a bit underrated IMO for early South Park.

@llamasarus1 oh similar? I struggle to think of similar docs to this one. There's not a ton of excellent documentaries covering tv/movies that I've seen tbh. There are those Movies That Made Us docs on Netflix which are fine but a little too zany and excessively edited for my liking. I'll just list a few that are my favorites and 'll start with two suggestions that i think fit relatively close to this one: - George Carlin's American Dream - NoClip Documentaries (patreon supported video game docs) my favorite, and maybe closest in terms of feel is the series on the development of Hades. Others i like a lot: - Tony Hawk: Until the Wheels Fall Off - Wild Wild Country - Pro wrestling docs (Beyond the Mat, Dark Side of the Ring, and the A&E docs) - Woodstock 99: Peace, Love, and Rage - Bad Brains: A Band in DC - The Keepers - Won't You Be My Neighbor? - The Devil Next Door ... I gotta stop lol.

I've seen The Book of Mormon multiple times. Probably the funniest thing I've ever seen in my life. The humour is exactly the same as South Park and Team America, except it is on a stage and happening live in front of you. Also the soundtrack is just phenomenal. You have to see it live on stage if you ever get the chance.

Season 14 is the greatest season ever. Creme Fraiche, The Coon & Friends Trilogy, Poor & Stupid, Medicinal Fried Chicken, the banned episodes where the moral of the story was, "...that's right, children. You can get anything you want in this world with violence", etc. I bought the DVD set right when the some of the episodes were being pulled. Some of the most offensive and outrageous material was bred and born in Season 14. (Crippled Summer was set on the back burner after Matt and Trey felt unsure about releasing it to the public. The backlash from the 200/201 episodes caused them to throw it on the air and take a week off. That is how the greatest f%$&ing Jimmy and Timmy episode made it to the fans. Matt and Trey's creator commentary on every episode that whole season is worth going through.

15:10 - 15:20 Not only did they take LSD and wear dresses to the academy awards, but they also had them tailor made specifically in the same design as dresses that were worn by Jennifer lopez and Gweneth paltrow which were worn by trey and Matt respectively (from what I remember hearing, apparently gweneth Paltrow was glaring at matt, and Jennifer lopez even went out of her way to push trey)

Best season of all time for me is season 19. Seasons 18-20 are the "serialized seasons" and 19 to me struck the best balance between serialization and every episode being unique. It was so timely in 2015 when the PC culture was really getting out of control and still resonates today.

If you get the chance, listen to the commentary track for “Woodland Critter Christmas” it will give you a real insight into their process and shows an example of them (almost) hitting the wall creatively, but managing to put out an amazing episode and cap of that season….

As tame as it might be, season 2 and 3 are combined my favorite. The humor, the stories, just amazing. The cliff hanger ending to season 1 was amazing, as was the following episode. Hell, even the full length terance and phillip episode was amazin! Dash, I really really wanna see you review some of the earlier stuff. For me, my centimental favorite episode has to be Mecha-Streisand. Just hilarious, and the first episode I ever watched. An awesomely outrageous story plus Anime style fights with a gigantic mechanised Barbara Streisand!

I'm loving your journey and discovery of South Park, but more so how you appreciate the humour and it's nuance, and I'm so glad you finally got to see this documentary, I think it will mean even more to you now because of how many of the episodes you've seen. It was a seminal moment for me seeing just how much went into it as well, I'm glad you've seen this too. Monty Python: You've got to look up "Ministry of Silly Walks" and the "Dead Parrot", those are two great ones to start you off :) South Park: I doubt I'll get a lot of support on this one, it was an old one, but *Season 3 Episode 10 "Korn's Groovy Pirate Ghost Mystery",* the Nu Metal band Korn played themselves as characters from a Scooby Doo style mystery. It's a bit like Matt was saying in the documentary, the early stuff is a lot more tame, but I always really enjoyed some of the early episodes, and this one was so funny because of how out of character these metal rockers were :D

It's funny you mention the episode that parodied Heavy Metal. It took them a long time to make because they had to introduce three animations. The South Park animations, the hand drawn Heavy Metal animations, and computer generated animation such as the Firebird in space.

Good choice, this documentary is great. I remember on the Fishsticks episode, you mentioned curiosity on their process and it made me think of this documentary. I think it was Bill Hader who came up with the core idea for that episode. These dudes are notorious workaholics, but it's great that they hold themselves to such a standard. The two games they went on to make, they insisted they be involved in nearly all aspects of the game and they turned out fantastic. Until then, South Park games were pretty terrible.

That heavy metal parody was all hand drawn and they had to hire in other people to assist with the process they had never done animation li8ne that before and it took longer than a week to do, I think it took like a month so they did another episode while doing that one in between. No I don't remember where I read that but I do remember on my work break reading it somewhere on google when they were doing a breakdown of certain episodes of how they did it

I like how they made their animations like Monty Python did. stop motion style then they progressed to computers and now they can make better animations and more complex storylines. As long as there are new movies and news they can continue. For current events which can go months at a time I bet they have a library of ideas, but they have to get it out. That lady who children were taken from their mother to be deported. The kids were hiding in the closet and south park put that in an episode before the week was through. Brilliant

It should be noted that they don't do episodes in 6 days because they have to. They explained in one of those mini commentaries from some season that they tried making their package of episodes months before they were due to be aired, and it never worked for them, creatively. So they choose to fly by the seat of their pants and pull episodes outta their asses. I always found that astounding. That's an insane amount of pressure to be under

the South Park Sticky Forms Adventure Book is one of my favorite things ever, you can make South Park scenes inside of it using little re-usable stickers. sucks mine was stolen
