As someone with Asperger's and depression for years, I want to say that the two episodes South Park made on these are my all-time favourite episodes. I thought the concept of everything *literally* being shit was great, and Eric's "assburgers" thing with the school nurse is hilarious! The two episodes for me are both emotional and hilarious. They really hit home with me and despite the jokes, they actually do a great job with the serious side. I'm always concerned that people will see these and think they are being offensive and poking fun at these issues is wrong, but they aren't. I absolutely adore these episodes and like with everything South Park makes, what matters is having a sense of humour. 😊 (Just edited to change my grammar slightly in places and to word a couple things better. Sorry.)

This 2 parter was written at a time where Matt and Trey were feeling like they needed to change the direction of the show, it was a hard time for them both, so they started to experiment with serialisation rather than a new story for every episode, however at the time it didn’t feel like it would work. That’s why stan is trying to take a left turn at the end. But Sharron is all about staying with what she knows, despite it probably not being the best for her because it’s safe and stable

These two episodes tore me up. I feel like Stan (more from the previous episode) a lot around my friend group. Like I'm just waiting for them to get tired of me being depressed or whatever and stop inviting me to stuff and frankly I wouldn't blame them if they did. I don't want to be an emotional drain, but you can't really fake being happy when you aren't, you know?

I have Asperger's Syndrome since I was around four or five. As a child, I had trouble explaining things or how to interact with people. For example, I don't know how to start a conversation to another person unless somebody starts talking to me. When I was seven, I thought the word "huge" was pronounced "hug". Even I had a normal childhood, it was a struggle. I felt like an outcast until I found out many people are diagnosed Asperger's and are VERY successful people.
@solitudeguard5688Күн бұрын
I’ve realised a few people in the comments have Asperger’s too. It’s very difficult sometimes because I see my diagnosis is “invisible” I articulate quite well and come across as charismatic in real life, I’m able to socialise but it’s extremely draining for me and others seem to do so without it affecting them. People think “oh he’s chill, nothing wrong with him” but longer lasting relationships seem to be more difficult and then I have routines and plan everything in my life. Hehe

Sharon talking about people getting older and the best thing being to stick with what you know is a metaphor for Matt & Trey feeling burned out on making South Park, thinking that it was time to end it and do something else, then realizing that they are both middle-aged men and that making a big change in their lives at this point is going to take more energy than they've got and that it's better to just stick with what they know... the episode before this ended on such a cliffhanger that hinted at the pair feeling this way and taking a "left turn"... that a lot of fans were convinced that it was going to be the end of the series. So... when this bittersweet cap on the story aired... it was kind of depressing, but also kind of a relief. At least if you were worried that the show was going to end. Honestly, though, even though I still love South Park and there have been some real banger episodes that aired after this one that I'm glad were made... I think they probably should have ended it here and done something else. Because ever since these episodes it has felt a lot like they're just kind of phoning it in. Sticking with what they know to collect a paycheck or because they're too lazy to try something else at this late stage in their lives. And, that's fine, I guess, but... later seasons of South Park are definitely not what the show used to be. Peaked around season 7-10... and here... sometime between season 15 and season 20... is approximately when the show definitely jumped the shark.

That line about it being aliens sending out perception altering rays is a callback to the movie They Live by John Carpenter. It also popularized the sunglasses as a sign of "breaking out into the real world" way before Matrix. Also, a few years ago I was diagnosed as a neurodivergent person and my family have been supportive of me managing it. They said that it explained a lot of my anger problems and social awkwardness. As my brother told me: "David, I believe I speak for the entire family when I say UH DUH!"

This episode hits hard for me, I have some family issue myself, which I totally get Stan's emotion. I am a 30+ yrs old whom gives thousands to my single mother monthly. But she is overly controlling and insecure, always questioning me and I would steal all her money. Checks my bank account and credit card daily, and needs me to explain transactions to her, even like a coffee from mcdonalds. I have been having nightmares for well over 2 years every night now, and everything has been crap to me. And when I distance myself, she blames me for making the family fall apart. Trying to get joy out of things, and watching South Park with Dash makes me smile :)

@michael_c2 thanks man, I do understand the concept and honestly, I am doing fine from the outside. I have a pretty nice place to stay, a pretty well paid job. But it's my mum that gives me nightmare, just a month ago, there's an announcement that my industry will have 3% salary increase, she asked did u get it? How come I don't see it in the account? And last night I have another nightmare abt my mum questioning my bank account. I have not been happy for a long time and I dunno who I can talk to, it's not something I can tell a friend about my family issue. And honestly, I pay her $1500 every month, n the month after I got married and moved into my new house last year. I needed to get furnitures n bills etc. Which that month was $1900 in credit card. I went to visit her, the first thing she said wasnt not hello or hey or whatever. It wa a confronting tone "hey ur credit card this month is very high". N then she go through transaction by transaction asking me to explain. Which honestly I have more than enough to pay it off..... N it's my own work n earning. I was like.... Can u stop checking my finance? N she blew up..... It's just very hard....

this episode had a weird effect on me in june of 2023. i had been making half hearted but potentially successful attempts to end it for about 8 months at the time. i watched a reaction to this episode one day and decided i would quit doing everything else i had been doing and just spend the next year drinking as much as i could. i started drinking flatboat whiskey and by about august i was going through two handles a week. i was doing 8 shots every day before work, drinking at lunch when i could, and spending the nights drinking until i fell asleep. i told myself i would stop drinking exactly one year later. i drank like this every single day, gained about 60 lbs, and started having happy moments far more often. one year and one day later i quit cold turkey. i lost over 50lbs in about 3 months. quitting was easy for me and i haven’t had a drop of alcohol in six months now. i’m never happy anymore and i wish i could go back to drinking without gaining the weight or taking the hit to my wallet. oh well.

This is sadly what it’s like to be a kid with depression in a world that doesn’t understand it. My teachers, principal, and even my school counselor all treated me as though I was just a no good lazy kid. And because I didn’t know anything about depression either, I agreed. I didn’t realize the troubles I was having were the result of a mental disorder and I thought I couldn’t be helped. It wasn’t until I was an adult and sought treatment that I actually learned I was clinically depressed and was finally able to get the help I should have gotten ten years earlier.

As someone with Asperger's, I first wanna say I freaking love this episode 😂 and how accurate it is to how it feels. That bit where drunken Stan begs Kyle to come back and chases him off is a very real thing and I honestly don't know why that is. But I describe the disorder itself as feeling like a very lopsided balance of intelligence and social awareness. That's why people with Asperger's are often some of the smartest people you ever meet and can remember even the smallest impossible details but can also be incredibly socially awkward. Of course, your social capacity can typically catch up to normal as you get older, but then the tendency to distance yourself from others socially almost becomes voluntary because it really seems like the world is shit while most people seem blind to it and you feel like you're the only one who knows this. These are very real things. But once again I freaking love this episode and the Matrix spin on the disorder 😂
