I couldn't agree more. I don't buy this "it's a disease and you're powerless" stuff. A person trying to cut down on drinking can just buy ONE tallboy(24 Oz) beer, instead of a six or 12 pack. He can drink that tallboy over the span of 1-2 hours while he watches TV or whatever. And if he feels a "booze craving" after that, he can take a nap and sleep it off. Take a tylenol pm if he needs to. Or engage his mind in some activity like reading a good book or sketching a picture. I just don't accept that there is some unstoppable "demon" in his mind, MAKING him helplessly get into his car and going to buy more booze. Nonsense.

As an alcoholic I just accept things how they are. A person can quit anytime they want but addiction has its other side and it borders on insanity.
@dcworld4349 Жыл бұрын
Yeah telling an alcoholic that you can drink a little and responsibly is like saying that you can do just a little bit of H once in a while. Granted H will make you addicted faster but it's the same principle. And it's actually more dangerous to detox from alcohol if your tolerance level is so high that you drink a vodka bottle a day. Where I think this episode gets it right is how religious and a bit culty certain AA places are. So if you live in a small town it can be hard to find meetings that are more fitting. Just like you have the opposite extreme where you have rehab facilities that claim they can cure alcoholism or any other addiction in 28 days so that when you get out of there you are told you can start drinking again just as long as you don't overdo it. Is it a disease the same way cancer is? Of course not. But there are people who literally die if they are exposed to peanuts because they get an allergic reaction. The way I think of alcoholics is sort of like that. Their body and brain chemistry simply don't allow for them to just have that one drink without their brain chemically starting to tell them to not only keep going after the first drink but to do it all over again the next day until it's all they do. That being said I would not classify Randy as an alcoholic, and not because he's able to keep up a better lifestyle than Kenny's parents. Stan is right he's a hypochondriac.

I am an alcoholic as well. I feel like my brain is going crazy all the time and I drink to settle it down, and to help me sleep, but the flip side of the coin is alcohol on the long run make some more crazy and makes you sleep less. Plus it kills your insides which I feel like I'm doing but at the same time I am actively going after mental health help no it's taken me years to get to a real doctor because I'm poor. But I think if I get proper medication and get my mind settled I won't feel like drinking as much. I don't drink socially and I don't drink to get confidence or anything like that I just drink because it helps me forget things and I can enjoy a show or something every once in awhile.

I'm an alcoholic and my alcohol abusing friends (smart guys regardless) told me I've got to do something for this problem, because otherwise I won't live to see this summer. As much as I love South Park, this episode really pissed me off for trivializing alcoholism. So many people think it's just "partying", while in reality I often have tears in my eyes. I’ve said this before but you are without a shadow of a doubt the best channel that reacts to any tv show. You have the most insane knack for catching references I’ve pointed that out before, but what you’re getting even better at the further you get with the show is catching callbacks, references to older episodes and reoccurring jokes. I mean to actually take the time to go “damn I know I’ve seen that character before” then looking through your reactions to find which episode it was and cutting out that clip, I really appreciate that amount of effort. A lot of these channels forget they’re WATCHING SOMETHING, they put in zero effort with editing and half the time don’t even pay attention or catch the easiest most obvious reference bc they don’t care. You actually take the time to put in extra stuff, be it references, questions for the audience or a point about the episode. You’re completely engaged, you don’t just say every episode is flawless you’re honest about how much you enjoyed each one and what it was that you liked. I don’t think I watch ONE other channel that reacts to shows or movies, every now and then I’ll watch one for a specific movie or show episode but you’re the ONLY one im subscribed to. The only other reaction channels I watch are like 2 or 3 for music if even that, and I still just watch ones I like or am interested in. This is the only reaction channel period that I watch every single upload from, I’m never disappointed even if it’s an episode I’m not a huge fan of

@AJ-ut8cz Жыл бұрын
This episode is super important to me. It's the episode that helped me lose over 100 lbs. It drove home the message that my decisions were the reason I was morbidly obese. Because just like every drink randy had was a choice made by him entirely under his own control, every piece of food I ate was a choice I was making. I was choosing to be fat just like randy was choosing to be an alcoholic. It's not something out of your control, you're literally the only one who has any control over it. Everyday you make a series of choices that dictate the person you will become. If you want to become a fitness freak then you need to make the choices a fitness freak would make everyday and then you'll become a fitness freak. Make the choices of the person you want to be, and you'll be that person. Just like Dr Wong said to Rick. "You chose to come here, you chose to talk, to belittle my vocation, just as you chose to become a pickle. You are the master of your universe and yet you are dripping with rat blood and feces, your enormous mind literally vegetating by your own hand. I have no doubt that you would be bored senseless by therapy, the same way I'm bored when I brush my teeth and wipe my ass, because the thing about repairing, maintaining, and cleaning is; it's not an adventure. There's no way to do it so wrong you might die. It's just work, and the bottom line is some people are okay going to work, and some people, well, some people would rather die. Each of us gets to choose."
@adamplace1414 Жыл бұрын
The only clarification I might make is that no one chooses to be an alcoholic, but they do choose to be a drunk. Maybe the equivalent is that you always had a tendency to overeat, but you got rid of the desire to do so - just a guess, I obviously don't know for sure. I hope that doesn't come off like I'm trying to change the meaning of what you said, because I'm not - that's all absolutely wonderful and spot on. Just a little extra info to bear in mind. Congrats on the positive outcome of your journey!

This is still one of my favorite episodes. I was in AA for several years but I ended up leaving because it was so much like a cult. They were extremely controlling they demanded their time and money. They controlled every single aspect of your life, and if you didn't abide their rules you would be publicly shamed...still sober but most of the people who were there with me are dead now. I will say there are some things that I learned there that actually do help, but I have no interest in being a part of a cult. I got sober so that I could be in control of my life

I'm so proud of you for powering through and taking control over your own life by your own rules ♥ It's sickening to me how AA takes advantage of people who are suffering like that and force the same agenda on every individual. This has a place in the show's history because what it did was shape all the controversies that the show dealt with for the next 4-5 years. Plus, 1:17 was based on a true part of creator Trey Parker's childhood. When he was 9, his dad was drinking a beer while driving up a road pass and didn't want to stop so he drunk the beer and then peed into the bottle, while he was driving.

@lisettegarcia701329 күн бұрын
And he put some false words in Randy's head. Alcoholism is not a disease, it's an addiction. If Randy kept on drinking throughout his life, _then_ he has a disease which is called hepatitis. Which is caused when his liver shrivels up if he drinks more then less. What Stan told him is the truth. If he just cuts down on his drinking and know that he can't drink and drive at the same time then he has responsibility and discipline *(disciprine)* .

I resonate with this episode so much. I've always drank beer, maybe a few shots of rum, but it escalated slowly and after a rough cpl years *ahem covid* and family illnesses and work drama, I went way over the edge. I REALLY fucked up a few times but luckily my boss is a great person and believed in me. She gave me a time frame to fix it on my own, or else I'd have to do AA or rehab, etc. So I fixed it. I felt like I had to prove I could do it alone through willpower. I didn't need AA or god or forgiving people to make me better. I was never an angry drunk and hadn't wronged anyone but myself. I feel better than ever now. And I can still have a cpl beers when I want. For me personally, going to rehab or AA would have been torture. This episode showcases how you can't fix everyone's addiction or alcoholism with the same plan. Some people latch onto the idea of it being a disease and that they are powerless over it. I don't think that's the right way to look at it. My opinion is it's not a disease. I beat it through willpower and the fact that the people giving me a 2nd chance cared about me. I didn't want to fuck that up and ruin those relationships. But for real. Randy is an alcoholic lol. I just love how they use him to showcase the problems with addiction treatment. Edit: I don't think it should be classified as a disease. But it's certainly a psychological issue that needs treatment. Telling people they have no control over it is not the solution IMO.

Man I wish this episode didn't have real-life parallels. When I was younger I had a friend who had 2 DUI's. He was put on probation, had to attend AA, lost his license for a while and for about a year and a half I took care of him. Helped him get to his job, do things he needed to on a daily basis, and kept him occupied so that he wouldn't resort to drinking again out of boredom. He got sober, got off probation with his car back and everything. No more than a day after his last state-mandated activity, he was at a bar, getting hammered with another friend, and they drove home. I was so angry, and insulted that I'd spent so much time trying to help someone whom it felt like had just used me for their own benefit with no intent to change. Not long after that he found religion and doubled down on it, meanwhile, I finally came out as an atheist, which was a big deal seeing as I come from a very fundamentalist-oriented family. He called me up and stated he didn't believe me, borderline insulted me about it, and then removed me from all his social media before moving out of state. You're either a good person without religion, or you're not. having faith doesn't change who you really are, and if anything makes some people even worse.

This is way too true about the 12 step program. I remember being in Boy Scouts; we would have our meetings at a church. I was reading through the church’s library, and there was a book on the dangers of alcoholism, and curing alcoholism. The first part of the book talks about how people become alcoholics, the end of the book talks about curing alcohol addictions. But the book doesn’t have a happy ending, because the main anon character didn’t accept god. (Really disturbed stuff. He failed solving his problems, because he wasn’t religious enough.)

I rack discipling, so i don't drink. I stopped dreaming of having it under control. The problem of Stans theory is: Because im an alcoholic, i can't possibly enjoy if i try to drink in moderation. Sure i can go to a bar and buy one or two beers, but after that, every cell in my body start screaming more alcohol and it's not a pleasant feeling. Even if i could drink in moderation, i don't wanna torture myself. Im powerless against this addiction so i don't have to fight against the illusions that my mind creates, i don't have to negotiate with myself if i should have a drink. Yes, i go to aa-meetings regularly. Never agreed to "having a disease" part, even though the program has helped me alot. Rarely even talk about my alcoholism anymore. It's more like, i wanna improve myself to be a better person overall. Cult dynamics is something i've been thinking alot during these years, a single group can be vulnerable against since there can be some individuals who try to force their own views alot. Anyway, good episode, one of my favorites.

Mm i dunno if he got a point there , most will not notice or admit that they have a prob , and will exactly claim that they drink on occasion , socially , and can control themselves . You don't usually gets DUIs like Randy's if you drink occasionally and responsibly . Where the episode nails it imo , is with that weird crossover with religion as part of the program . I always found it off , and like trading an addiction for another . It's cool if religious themed 12 steps programs actually help already faithful people , it's plain weird when "forced" onto atheist or agnostics .

Lost is my favourite show of all time, so I obviously recommend it. A lot of people who watched it back in the day didn't follow it properly and dropped it early and talk trash about it but it was ahead of its time and if released nowadays would be much more appreciated.

I love how you had to pause after the little girl with elephantitis, I lost it at that point, SP so messed up 😂🐘

"Lost" was very interesting and fascinating. Many plots and turns and twists. There were many speculations if the whole place was some form of Purgatory or just a random island, or part of military, or ... Until the Writers basically admitted that they had no clue what they were doing and they had no plan for where to go with all the threads and plots they had opened in the show.

I think it's one of the best shows ever until they get off the island then it goes a bit downhill. In fact I'm defiantly going to rewatch it later.

@@sirdrchefwangiii1841 I have the series on Blu-ray and watched it live and again on home video and can confirm based on conversations with coworkers that I was getting more than the rest 🤷♀️

As a Christian, I don't think I'd see a statue bleeding as anything Miraculous, Divine, or Holy. On another note, any episode centered around Randy is hysterical. Something, like a trend, is going around the town and he hops on it immediately.

10:16 THIS is what "you laugh, you lose" means. Not just funny things. Things you'll laugh at that you shouldn't. So you lose.

1:11 yea, but not while literally driving obviously. The air in the bottle will get replaced with liquid, so make sure the air is able to escape, or its pretty much guaranteed, that it gets messy with that already tough task... If u arent noteworthy experienced with it and im sure most arent. 😄 The bigger the opening, the easier it gets and the opening of a beer bottle is VERY risky to make the story short. The amount might be more than u think, especially if it went so far, that u have to use a bottle for it, so be ready to cancle it... What shouldnt be a noteworthy problem. I mean this is a emergency situation and u dont have to empty the bladder 100% to be good enough again for a while.
