Sure, lot's of fans like me were mad at first , but understanding the intent just made me appreciate their sense of humor even more. Think about the balls this takes, for TV in the 90s. So much of TV comedy then was about fan service (Ross and Rachel were always gonna get married, come on) and yet South Park, less than a year old, coming off its biggest episode, with all the attention in the world on them... And yet instead they put out an intentionally crappy April Fool's meta-joke parody of themselves, itself parodying a movie no one even remembered back then - all because they thought that was even funnier.

Kind of funny aside, most people forget or are unaware, the whole reason that Saddam Hussein on South Park looks like he's Canadian is because the character originally showed up in this episode...

Then explain other characters, like Mel Gibson and David Hasslehoff (Mr Garrison getting his face). The flapping head has been used for non Canadians. In fact, Hasslehoff was the first.... It's not him "looking Canadian." It's South Park being consistent with how they previously showed him. Same with Mel Gibson, who's made multiple appearances, SP just decides which real faces they use for celebrities and who they don't use them for.

@@DLFLux you obviously haven't watched this show as much or as carefully as I have. Mel Gibson on South Park does not have a flapping head. Neither did Mr. Garrison when he had a nosejob. Both had real faces pasted over their bodies, which changed expressions, but their heads were not flapping like Canadians. The movements are exaggerated because they use only a few different head pictures combined with large fake mouths (sometimes) to animate them, but they are not the two disconnected eggshells model that are used for Canadians on the show. Which in turn is only used for Canadians because that's how Terrence and Philip were originally animated, as a joke aimed at people who criticized South Park for having crappy animation. When Mr. Garrison gets a nosejob in the episode Tom's Rhinoplasty, his face is replaced with a magazine cutout of David Hasselhoff's face... because it was funny to have a photo-realistic recognizable celebrity face. But his head isn't flapping. His mouth is still your standard South Park character's mouth. There are other differences in the models used for Saddam and other celebrities. Seriously... just look it up. I don't know why you didn't bother looking up these clips and watching them before commenting. Saddam's body is very blocky, a collection of squares and rectangles, just like everything that comes from Canada on the show. Mel Gibson's model looks like a normal human male body. Mr. Garrison's body when he got a nosejob remains Mr. Garrison's body. Other celebrities sometimes have photorealistic faces and some have more cartoonish faces. But none are like Saddam Hussein who looks like a South Park Canadian. What I wrote was 100% accurate. You are wrong.

If I understand correctly, this was the first episode that established that Terrance and Phillip were Canadian, and also that they were relatively real people. In Season 1, they were just assumed to be a cartoon within a cartoon, which was one of the two reasons for having a Pac-Man face, the other being babies like Ike. But now that Terrance and Phillip are in the same layer of fiction as the rest of South Park, the Pac-Man face became associated with Canadians. This also meant that Kyle's baby brother Ike had to be ret-conned into an adopted brother, which was resolved two episodes after this one. As for the Ethiopian Pac-Man baby briefly seen in "Starvin' Marvin," Matt and Trey are probably hoping we've forgotten about him, or just didn't notice. Maybe Matt and Trey themselves forgot.

Appreciate the honest reaction. The episode wasn't supposed to be very good... that was part of the prank. The humor wasn't so much the episode itself, but rather that M&T punked all their fans on April Fool's Day, and everyone sat through a half hour long Terrence & Philip show thinking to themselves "holy shit, this cannot be the entire episode, can it??" We wouldn't get the actual conclusion to Cartman's Mom Is a Dirty Slut until six weeks later...

In fairness the whole point of this episode was to be the ultimate injoke for the creators by making their entire audience mad by ending a 4 week cliffhanger with the ultimate anticlimax of a completely unrelated episode mocking their audience. When I want to watch South Park I just go back and rewatch your reactions. There are some South Park episodes that I cannot wait till you see! You really had to be there for it. A tape short went around (having to be recorded and re-recorded on VHS!) that made this show popular to begin with, had an amazing first season, left off on a cliffhanger and came back months later with an intentionally bad episode. Episodes 200 and 201 is where you do find out who Cartmans father is. They're both banned because they feature the prophet Muhammad but you can find them through certain streaming sites. I highly recommend them they are both some of my favorite episodes ever.

I love just how Parker and Stone took one of the worst and most hated episodes of the entire series and spun it into one of the largest and most significant episodes as far as early worldbuilding is concerned. The events of this episode pretty much lead directly into the movie, it establishes Terrance and Philip as Canadians and thus establishing the Canadian look going forward, leading to Ike getting retconned to being an adopted Canadian baby, and it marks the first appearances of Saddam Hussein, Scott the dick, and Ugly Bob. If you like to see more of these characters, check out Season 7's Christmas in Canada. It's a Wizard of Oz parody in which the South Park gang travel across Canada to try and retrieve Ike before Christmas, and Scott fills the role of the Wicked Witch of the West.

When this came out, I was only ten years old, and allowed to watch South Park, so long as I never repeated the bad language in it. That was my parent's rule I still remember season 1 fondly, I love the first basic episodes, though they aren't as glamorous or exciting as the later seasons. I never hated this episode like most other fans, but took it as it was, a light-hearted April fools joke with a simple yet amusing story. Saying that though, the following episode, Season 2's Cartman's Mom is still a dirty S**t has always been one of my favourites.

As a humble Canadian, I speak for all of us Canadians when I say we all love it when South Park makes fun of us... Because as a Canadians we are born with a love for roasting and being roasted, we all know its all in good fun and we make ourselves part of the joke...
