Fun Fact: Priests used to be able to get married and have families, but then they were not leaving all their worldly possessions to the Church since they had pesky families to inherit their stuff. Some Pope had the brilliant idea to tell all priests they must be single and celibate so now the church inherits more stuff... and nothing bad ever happens when these men who cant have wives are alone with vulnerable people.
@AlexA-uz6po7 ай бұрын
It was also because in medieval Europe, the first son used to inherit the profession of the father (the son of the blacksmith was a blacksmith, the son of the baker was a baker, etc). The fear of the church was that men would become priests because of inheritance rather than faith.

I agree with your assertion at the end. When you remove emotions and superstitious hang ups from the world, you find that ethics and morality have no more basis in reason and logic as any other religious structure. One of the baser truths, for better or worse, is that human beings require subjectivity and unreason to create the illusion of sensibility. Biggest problem with ideologies rooted primarily in the political sphere, is that they lack a sufficiently sophisticated metaphysical structure. This lack of metaphysics makes it exceedingly difficult to successfully map the problems which arise from The Human Condition on to them. We as human beings need The Parables and stories in order to model the problems that we encounter in day-to-day life. The world as described by movements such as socialism and communism and Fascism and liberalism, is too narrow to answer the most fundamental of questions. Chief among these being, given that I exist what is to be done of this? It may come as a shock to the more ideologically entrenched members of society, but ideologies which describe the nature of society as their primary concern, can never meaningfully address the nature of individuals within Society nor how they relate to that Society. It is only those religious structures, which have grown and developed into sophisticated metaphysical systems, which have proven against the unrelenting hand father time, to be sufficiently robust for the purposes of grounding one's life.

Thank you! But one question, what aspect of a religion being a religion does atheism not fulfill? As far as I am concerned it is exactly the same model, only with the parameters being changed.
@TLeining7 ай бұрын
@@Tolye What aspects does it fulfill? Depending on who you talk to, the central aspect(s) of religion changes from something simple as "faith" to a complete list of behaviors, practices, morals ... Pretty much all religions have at least a designated worldview that establishes right and wrong, as well as a central figures in the Creator and the Messiah. I do agree that there are people who treat Atheism as religion, along with religious figures such as Dawkins and Hitchens. But does that make Atheism itself a religion?
@Tolye7 ай бұрын
@TLeining 1. They subconsciously acknowledge a "higher power", most of the time, they replace God with science. 2. They start extracting moral values based on their "higher power". 3. They gather in groups.
@Tolye7 ай бұрын
@TLeining On the other hand, I could also argue that atheism does not exist per se. That is only if we agree on two pre-conditions: 1. Any divine figure is a representation of a moral paradigm. 2. Everything pertaining to morality is rooted in religion and God. With this in mind, nearly every single human being adheres to a set of moral values. Thus, he automatically acknowledges those moral values and by implication he acknowledges the God from which they stem. Therefore, even as a so-called "atheist" you still use God as a moral compass, either consciously or subconsciously. You cannot go beyond the moral paradigm of God and subsequently the religious roots of it.
@TLeining7 ай бұрын
@@Tolye While I agree that there are Atheists who treat Science as something that can answer everything, that doesn't make it a higher power. It also doesn't apply to Atheism itself. There is no prerequisite in Atheism to place value in Science. I have no idea what people you have talked to, who have extracted moral values out of Science. Gathering in groups is an aspect of religion? Okay, one out three. ^_^ Obviously I disagree on the two pre-conditions. The argument also doesn't solve the foundational problem. Even if everything pertaining to morality is rooted in religion [...], and any divine figure represents a moral paradigm, that doesn't tell us if the divine figure really does exist, or is a man made construct to convey said moral paradigm. So even if I were to give you those pre-conditions, as an Atheist, I wouldn't be convinced that those divine figures are real. Instead, there is evidence that at least some of those gods were invented by humans. What's the evidence that at least one god is real? The big problem of course, is defining what moral values represent which divine figure. Take the God of the bible. What are his moral values to slavery? Rape? Pedophilia? Homosexuality? Then of course, what happens, when the moral values of a religion are questioned? The Lutheran Protestants disagree with the Roman Catholics on a few things. But they believe in the same god. Which god led which group down the wrong path? Or did they create their own moral code and use the divine figure to convey that to the public?
