South Sudan's most comprehensive aerial wildlife survey found about 6 million antelope - a figure that would make it the world's largest land mammal migration. The nonprofit organization African Parks warned that the animals face a rising threat from commercial poaching. (AP Video by Sam Mednick. Produced by Julián Trejo Bax). Read more: bit.ly/3XXaxRp

Probably part of the reason why they migrate. This green are brown and dry parts of the year. It's probably less rain there these days as well.

It's great they're trying to seek a balance and there's a South Sudanese person spearheading these convos! So often outsiders forget that HUMAN AFRICAN LIVES are at stake when discussing saving ANIMALS. It's so bad that often, our lives are secondary to those of elephants and antelopes while nobody would risk a European's life over an animal. It's usually forceful policies totally detached from lived realities. And they're being pushed to these extremes due to an economic and social global system that doesn't accommodate them nor their millenia-long ways of life that kept nature in balance

I totally agree but I think it is also important to note that the birth rate in Africa is extremely high and by 2100 the population will have tripled to over 3 billion according to the UN. If there isn’t any rigid protection of nature than this increasing population will easily take over africas incredible nature especially as the continent further industrializes. In contrast Europe has very few births and its population is crashing so the wild will be able to come back on its own and less policies need to be put in place.

What you say is true and sad, but if all the animals disappeared then there wouldn’t be any to hunt for food and people would starve anyway. Tourism brought by the wildlife could be a valuable source of income, but once it’s gone, it’s not going to come back

Yeah but with balance. It's not about wazungus it's about making sure we don't destroy our land like the "developed" world has. We need wildlife to thrive too... that's how our ancestors did... except they didn't rely on money so they didn't "need" to hunt excessively. That need driving this is what needs to change

If they weren't mostly insane, suicidal, and the walking fast-food chain of Africa, the wildebeest would be angry about getting the gnus that their migration lost its top spot on the _Guinness_ _Book_ _Of_ _World_ _Records._ They can still be the animal that naturally speaks the Wookie language from Star Wars.

You would be surprised. People have shifting baselines , which is a problem. The newest generations gets used to certain amount of wildlife and thinks that's normal, but if you look historically it might be 90% less from previous generations. For example take this into perspective : currently on Earth, wild land mammals make up only 2% out of ALL mammals on Earth...2% (and 2% sea mammals) !!!! The rest is humans, their pets and factory farmed animals, which is 96 freaking percent!! And all life support systems on Earth are in decline due to what we are doing... And who knows what was the historical numbers and range of these particular animals. Probably a lot more. So, I would say there's ways to go. A loot more conservation is needed. And not conservation only, but preservation.
