The kids have been asking to go on an overnight tramp for ages, but finding the right one can be tricky. Big hill climbs equal big decents which isn't good for Soph's knee, so we wanted to find an easy hike we could easily do with a fire place to keep us warm, and some beautiful views.
We kind of lucked out on this place after camping at Lake Ohau, we did a day trip to this area and saw there was a hut up the valley. The Valley looked beautiful, so here we find ourselves on a rougly 8km tramp up a beautiful remote valley in New Zealands mountains.

A big up to Mum and Dad for taking their kids on this type of adventure. Much respect. And the things Dad's have to do to get the family across a freezing river!

ha ha, wouldn't want it any other way mate ... Nice helping the kids and wife across the stream, kids would have been sweet if it wasn't so bone cold... I think their poor limbs would have seized and they would have been swept to the ankle deep rapids.

So admire Soph for getting out there and doing it all with her knee injuries. I had spinal surgery two years ago and have permanent nerve damage in my right leg so also find some things hard. After a couple of falls while out tramping I get a bit nervous on rough terrain but Soph is really inspiring. Your whole family is amazing! Really enjoy following your adventures.

Yea she is so tough. She;s also had 2 spinal surgeries as well as the 2 knee Ops' shes finished riding all the Alps to Ocean trail on Tue about 300km, she is a trooper. Everyone has their limits though and Soph is pretty good at listening to her body and not going up big hills lol...

Naw thanks! I'm pretty determined to not miss out on adventures and whenever I'm out there I am so grateful for the opportunity because I have clear memories of not being able to do anything (several times). I guess it's about being realistic with goals and being careful. I'll always walk with a pole and sometimes I'll be going down hills backwards. Nerve pain is really debilitating and everything is a balance. I've got to keep moving to keep mine at a manageable level, but too much stress can be hideous in terms of the pain. Cold is also heightens everything. Stoked to hear you're running. Just remind yourself of where you've been, what you've experienced - that way every activity is a win! 🎉😊

@sophleopard9162 so true! I have the issue I can't entirely feel the muscles in my leg so have no idea when they're tired. Have had a couple of pretty good falls when my leg has just given out. We are hopefully spending two months in Europe and Scandinavia over Xmas so have huge goals for that. Keep on keeping on, love watching you guys

What a great mini break away from the caravan. Love these nice river valley tramps. You should consider an overnighter to Lakehead or Coldwater hut at St Arnaud, and maybe a trip into the Leatham valley where you can access 4 huts from the truck. Maybe Big River hut near Reefton. At least those river crossings were each end of the walk, and nice to have a warm fire. A pruning saw is great for chopping up some firewood. Jade was keen with bare feet on the frost, some good work ferrying the kids across.
@leopardsgowild

Cheers Garth, yip Jades feet were pretty cold after the frost then the river, walking across those stoney river bottoms makes it even harder when it's really cold aye. I was glad there was an axe in the hut, it meant we could smash up some of the bigger pieces for some overnight logs.

@leopardsgowild
@leopardsgowild Жыл бұрын
Yea it's such a great resource to people to be able to go into no mans land and enjoy the outdoors. Some of these huts are in places that would take you 3 or 4 days to walk to so you can go extremely remote, some of them you can 4x4 drive to, others are about an hours walk, so it makes it really accessible for all abilities, there is over 1,000 of these in the country. Weekends are likely to be busier so of the really popular places you need to book ahead so you don't arrive and realise there is no bed for you.

It's a long time since I've been in country like that where you're so dominated by nature. My feet went numb just watching you standing in that river helping the kids across. It almost looked like you threw Toby across. I used to love that feeling of taking your pack off, like you are about to float off the ground.
@leopardsgowild
@leopardsgowild Жыл бұрын
ha ha, yes taking the pack off, is so good, the kids were commenting about that as well, feeling like they were so lite. It's some big country in there aye, being dominated by nature is a good way to describe it, you feel very insignificant in places like this.
