South Western Railway (SWR) and Island Line Train Fleet/Rolling Stock. SWR is a train operating company in the South West of England operating services between out of London Waterloo along the South Western Main Line and Windsor Lines to Exeter, Weymouth, Bournemouth, Southampton, Salisbury, Portsmouth, Basingstoke, Reading and London suburban stations/lines SWR also operate the Island Line on the Isle of Wight from Ryde Pier Head to Shanklin. This video shows the current train fleet (December 2022) along with the future rolling stock and past rolling stock for this operator, including the Island Line.
SWR trains that will be remaining with the operator include the class 158 and class 159 Express Sprinter trains which are the only diesel SWR rolling stock to operate around Southampton to Salisbury and on the West of England line linking Basingstoke, Andover, Salisbury, Yeovil, Axminster and Exeter. The Sprinters have 2+2 seating in standard and 2+1 in first class.
Class 444 and class 450 Desiro operate the majority of longer SWR services with the 444 operating the longer SWML services to Weymouth and some fast Portsmouth Direct Line services with the 450 operating everything else longer distance and outer suburban. The 444 have 2+2 seating in first and standard with the 450 having 2+3 in standard and 2+2 in first.
The class 458 will mostly be remaining with SWR as of December 2022 but 8 will leave the operator and the remaining units will be reduced to 4 carriages. These trains are currently standard class only with 2+2 throughout.
The class 455 including all 3 sub classes have started to be withdrawn during 2022 with these units planned to leave once the 701 are introduced. These units have standard class only and are 2+2 and bench style seating throughout.
The class 707 Desiro City have started moving to Southeastern with the remaining units moving when the 701 enter service. These units are standard class only and have 2+2 seating.
The class 701 Arterio, a form of Aventra, will be entering service beginning in 2023 and will take over London suburban services from the class 458, 455 and 707. These trains will be 5 and 10 carriages long with 90 in total and will be standard class only.
Island line on the Isle of Wight currently operates class 484 D-Trains converted from D stock from the London Underground district line. These feature standard class throughout and have a mix of 2+2 and tube style seating.
Previously SWR has operated class 442 Wessex Electrics and class 456. The Island line previously operated class 483 converted from 1938 tube stock with these being fully withdrawn in early 2021.
The train fleet information is correct as of December 2022 and future train fleet dates are based for the planned introduction for passenger services. Past Train Fleet is based on when the current South Western Railway franchise has been in operation from 2017 onwards.
