Transport for Wales train fleet/rolling stock. Transport for Wales (AW) is a train operating company in Great Britain (mainly serving Wales) operated by the Welsh government since taking over the franchise in 2021.
TfW operate services across the country of Wales serving every welsh station as well as operating route into England. TfW have a metro style routes in South Wales around the Cardiff Valley Lines from Central and Queen Street stations to Merthyr, Aberdare, Treherbert, Barry, Bridgend, Maesteg, Ebbw Vale and Newport. They also operate regional services such as those from Manchester to Cardiff, Birmingham to Aberystwyth, Cardiff to Carmarthen/Milford Haven and Manchester to Holyhead. TfW also operate rural local and long distance routes such as the West Wales lines, Heart of Wales line, Conwy Valley line and Cambrian lines.
This video shows the current train fleet (December 2023) along with the future rolling stock and past rolling stock for this operator.
The Transport for Wales train fleet is currently in the process of being nearly entirely replaced.
Older rolling stock from Arriva Trains Wales that TfW operate/have operated (to be replaced) included class 150 Sprinter, class 158 Express Sprinter, class 175 Coradia 1000, class 170 Turbostar, class 142/class 143 Pacer, class 769 Flex, Mark 3 locomotive hauled carriages.
The class 153 Sprinter currently operated with be split with some leaving TfW and some remaining for the Heart of Wales line Shrewsbury to Swansea service with some of the single carriage units being converted to become active travel units with more bike/luggage capacity.
The Mark 4 carriages with class 67 Locomotive are not new rolling stock but have joined within the last few years (some ex LNER and some ex Grand Central) and will be remaining with the operator for more premier services from Holyhead and Manchester to Cardiff via the Marches line.
New rolling stock that entered service/is entering service is the class 197 CAF Civity 2 and 3 carriage trains, class 230 D Train (ex London Underground) and class 231 Stadler FLIRT (bi mode).
New rolling stock planned to enter service in the next year are the class 398 Citylink tram trains for the core valley lines via Pontypridd which will give options for future street running extensions. class 756 tri mode FLIRT trains for the Rhymney/Penarth/Barry valley lines.
The train fleet information is correct as possible as of December 2023 and future train fleet dates are based for the planned introduction for passenger services. Past Train Fleet is based on when the current Transport for Wales operation has been in operation since 2018.
