anonymous I don’t use the term climate change or global warming or other for that reason. I do know first hand of the devastation of rivers, oceans, air, health, etc., from what I’ve seen first hand in indigenous communities in the Amazon rainforest that I work with and others in the US. I’ve seen, for example, that two feet below their soil there’s oil from oil spills from multinational petroleum extraction projects. They can’t grow food in their contaminated lands. Their rivers are contaminated and they eat contaminated fish. Even the air they breathe is contaminated and there are higher cancer rates in these communities due to extraction and the pollution that these projects create. Then there’s the pollution at the end of the process from driving cars that contaminate the air we all breathe. The pollution from chemicals from dying factories and textile manufacturers that end up in rivers and our food when crops are irrigated with this waste around the world...to name a few. I’ve been in the manufacturing/design industry for 3 decades... this first hand knowledge among other things is why I can’t work making more stuff people don’t need. So yes, the bad actors, cabal, corporations behind all this lump it all into a theme and agenda to fulfill their goals. But again we can use healthier ways to live in this world without devastating nature and the very sources of life that we depend on.

What could be more important that what Vivienne W was saying? Shami C calls herself 'a friend of' Westwood, but in fact Westwood was reaching a culminating point and she almost sabotaged it. What Westwood was saying was so coherent and so important, that an interviewer couldn't meaningfully add to it, nor steer it. It's sensible to realise that and have the good grace to step back. Instead Shami C having sponsored the visit, was attempting to take control and back to her own organisation and work, fearful that wasn't getting enough of a mention and prepared to do anything to get there. Embarrassing and tone-deaf. There was plenty of time to do that. Cringemaking. We all make mistakes but my worry is she didn't learn from it. Westwood was so gracious about it.

When I was young the slogans were 'rebel, freedom' etc. Now kids walk around with 'Obey' on their clothes, Britain is in very many ways just as backwards today except now youth fashion has been co-opted and become part of that sad moral slavery. Saying that I hardly know anyone who could afford any of Westwood's uber expensive punk clothes other than an occasional bum-flap or arm band, we just bought cheaper versions or made our own -or stole them from Seditionaries of course.

Westwood was open about the fact that she uses the fashion business as a. platform to finance her political activism. This means she was far more effective in the world than someone just scratching to get by, but sounding off about how they managed it.

What she is saying is explained by david ike and in zeitgeist. Zeitgeist the movie explains the cycle of debt more clearly and the way we are kept in poverty by the banks and governments. Don't be ridiculous. We've ALL got blood on our hands, starting with the seizing of this country from First Nations people and your and my continued occupation of it. There are plenty of historical injustices so don't pretend you don't benefit from history, because you do. Are we going to sit around finger pointing and wallowing in guilt and/or self pity? Or are we going to do something productive? Westwood realised that just being a punk wasn't sustainable intellectually nor morally. She decided to acquire more skills. One of them was to draw on the design and work from history, and that's where she developed a fine appreciation of tailoring. In fact she said a slight adjustment of 1/4 an inch would make all the difference to a design. That's how refined tailoring is. Westwood realised that throwing out tradition wholly wasn't the solution and that the Queen represented a lot of things, including high standards. That's why she accepted her honour from the Queen. Not that the monarchy is perfect, far from it. Get behind the Voice constitutional movement and do something productive instead of whining behind your keyboard and taking shots at people like Westwood who are inspiringly active and about whom you demonstrably know very little. There are far too few Westwoods in this world, and now she's gone. And far too many people like yourself. I hope at least you're young so you can quickly learn and change, like Westwood did. Read more books don't just get your opinions from websites. That would be a good start.

This is satire, right? Vivienne Westwood can't be serious (or can't be taken seriously) when she says she's animated by "the idea of people being victims that are just picked on because they happen to be in the wrong place at the wrong time and are then killed or, in the case of what's happening in America, in concrete cells in solitary confinement for the rest of their lives. Solitary confinement. I mean, 40 years not seeing anybody and you're stuck in there!" Didn't the lawyer in Shami Chakrabarti want to ask Westwood to name these individuals who've done nothing naughty but end up in prison? And is there anyone in the US prison system who spends 40 years in complete solitary? Surely the Americans don't even do that to people like Aldrich Ames? Chakrabarti fawns over her interview subject and expects her audience to fawn, even as Westwood says absurd and in some ways deeply offensive things about central banks all being entirely privately owned (some are substantially privately owned but they operate under government/public sector control) and being motivated by a desire to own absolutely everything. And then when Westwood confidently predicts the world south of Paris will soon be uninhabitable and it will all be too late if we don't de-carbonise our economies before 2024, Chakrabarti joins in. This is rubbish.

Clearly you don't know much about these topics. There are legislated powers of detention in Australia and they exist despite haebus corpus, which is a common law principle. The powers of arrest and detention are there and operate in defined circumstances, but the details of who has been held and for how long are in secrecy. How can this be? We don't know what we don't know there. The whole matter of challenging can isolate you and cause a lot of problems. Look at how the trial of a human rights lawyer in Australia, Bernard Colley has been held in camera. Collery is not a radical he was just doing his job. Of course she is glossing over many details and conflating facts, this the topic is huge and she's not a lawyer. Assange is a shocking case and the relevant law is almost irrelevant, it is clearly a witch-hunt. If you don't understand the varying laws in the US I don't blame you. It's complex but you sound like a lawyer yourself. How about then, researching how motivated by the need to find a culprit, people (in the wrong place at the wrong time) get framed then tried and locked up indefinitely? The three strikes laws in the US are particularly onerous about sentencing. The system of incarceration in the US particularly and in Australia, is oppressive against black Americans and First Nations people in Australia. Try and get your head around it. There are corporations running jails in the US, and now in Australia and there is no real motivation to look at the causes of crime and incarceration. There is a lot of cost involved in any meaningful change, and there aren't many votes in it. Onto climate change then. The fact is that we are now entering a dangerous period where feedback mechanisms have been triggered and the climate is increasingly unstable. What she says is true, but it's actually worse than that. Because the climate modelling we are using doesn't really take into account what happens when those mechanisms start to be triggered (example is release of methane gas from the tundra in Greenland, Siberia etc) and that's exactly what's happening. The results are actually far worse than predicted. Further, we have only knowledge about how to reduce emissions (which we refuse to act on meaningfully enough because, dog-in-the-manger style, we're waiting for others to do it first, and also it's very difficult indeed to stop the momentum of a carbon powered economic train). We have no concept of how we're going to remove carbon from the sea where it is being stored. It's not even being contemplated when it should be uppermost in our minds. UN climate change treaty emissions reduction targets need to be seen in this context. It's the surface temperatures in the sea and the currents underneath that are driving climate change, but that's a manifestation of carbon in the atmosphere, then being stored in the sea. Oceanographers have a lot of the story. There are tipping points here that have been triggered and don't show up in the very conservative modelling. These are limitations and you're only vaguely conscious of if at all. I suggest you do a deep study of these matters. ' Ask yourself this: Do you wait until you are absolutely certain of being robbed before you take out an insurance policy? No! you do a risk assessment. and you evaluate the risk of being wrong. In this case the potential is catastrophic. The reason we are not supposed to wait until there is total certainty, is because of that risk. This is what is called the precautionary principle. It is something you clearly have no concept of otherwise you wouldn't be clutching at straws as you clearly are. It wouldn't matter, but what's at risk is not your MacBook Pro, and family silver, but the continued survival of our species, or a significant number thereof. People have an optimistic bias it's part of our survival devices. But this won't suit all scenarios. In this case it's the worst possible attitude to have, and it's the dominant one. As you demonstrate. I find it ridiculous that you think this is not a problem but how to spell 'habeas corpus' is so major you lead with it. I won't tick you off about your use of the double negative because you're already making an insubstantial point. You must be English. I went to Australian law schools (yes, I have a higher degree) and the consensus was the demystification of legal principles particularly with the continuation of Latin terms, many of which don't withstand close scrutiny. And my central point was that the common law principle has not survived legislation since. To ignore that, and focus on the spelling of the common law Latin term means you must be desperate to score a point, however lame. I'd like to take you on in court, you'd be a doddle. And yes, we had people from Oxford and. Cambridge who transferred and tried to complete their degrees here and they were drowning at sea because our law schools are far more rigorous than yours because they involve problem-solving all the way through. The English just do theory and then do practice later. If you're American all I can say is Australian law schools, the top ones are highly regarded. And I know about climate change from the international law perspective and the practical perspective and from a policy-making perspective. And we are in deep doo doo. Deny it all you like but you're running a colossal risk. Already there are people hitting the panic button and going: we were wrong. Because they were. It's only getting worse from here on.

Over my lifetime (61 years so far) people have devoted a lot of time to saying how Malthus and the neo-Malthusians like Paul Ehrlich because the number of people who are starving to death has actually fallen at the same time as world population has increased by about 5 billion. Pessimist/realist that I am I think Malthus will eventually prove to be correct. Our population will expand to match the resources available, then it will go beyond. that and population and per capita living standards will decline. Maybe we're already seeing that. I made a conscious choice when I was in my early teens never to have children, precisely because I was concerned for the environment. But my three notionally green sisters had 10 children between them. Their micro decision-making has had an enormous macro outcome and you'd have to be a twit not to recognise that. The other thing I've seen in 61 years is wave after wave of young people wanting to take over from older people and feeling convinced they can and will do things better. Greta Thunberg's "how dare you" was typical young person inexperience and self assurance. She can't be expected to know that my generation grew up with visions of an environmental apocalypse thanks to Rachel Carson and Paul Ehrlich and the near certainty of a nuclear holocaust and the absolute certainty of mass unemployment as mechanisation and globalisation took made paid work opportunities a thing of the past. Didn't bloody happen. So, it remains true that the one thing I'm absolutely certain of is that there are too many human beings on the planet, living beyond the planet's means. I used to date a very highly regarded climate change expert and when I spoke to her boss, Andy Pitman (UNSW) he said we wouldn't have a problem if we all "enjoyed" the same standard of living as a very poor Chinese rural peasant - the sort that uses a pit toilet and eats grasshoppers when frogs aren't available. But we don't live like that and don't want to live like that and in multi-party democracies the parties that offer that to the electorate are never going to get into power. Sorry for having a go at you about habeas corpus. I really was just teasing. I know how little it matters that people misspell things from time to time. Hopefully you'll feel pleased that in this response I've addressed the substance of what you're saying. Have you seen Tim Jackson's talks on Prosperity Without Growth, or read his book of the same name?
