DUDE You gotta understand that 1. Hong Kong still has internet(CCP would take it away as soon as possible) 2. The education system, healthcare and people are way better here 3. NO TOFU DREG AND FAKE FOOD 4. Hong Kong has an unique language(Cantonese) and other areas don’t support it well(especially Guangdong after they banned traditional characters and cantonese) in addition many people know english fluently

I think the reason is the same as why foreigners want to move to Shenzhen.. it's the most advanced city on Earth.. I mean, you can deliver food in 15 minutes by drone and pay with QR code and then go couple of meters and robot will make ice cream for you, then you enter any shopping mall and you are suddenly in a paradise.. I mean, the only city that can compete is maybe Dubai or Singapore, but that's about it. If you have money to spend and don't have to work there, it's much better than HK, isn't it?

Having lived in both the cities, each has it's own pros and cons, for local HKners, of course SZ is a better choice, but for expats HK still has the upper edge! But I find HK housing prices/rents unreasonably high and that makes me look north! Hope the HK govt regulates it or it will be always new people coming and old going!

HK and SZ has a very similar dynamics with Singapore and Johor Bahru. I plan to work in Singapore for a few more years and retire in Malaysia.
@seye46 You're right, but when you're just starting your career mainland has more to offer, HK is getting old and outdated, Adaption of New technology is very slow due to high cost and old infrastructure, however I do speak basic Mandarin but SZ is very modern and with young population you don't find it hard even if you don't speak the language!

I am a foreign national. I used to visit Hong Kong and Macau a lot because I have visa-free access. It was very painful to apply for a Chinese tourist visa. Now that I have visa-free access to mainland China, I don’t bother with Hong Kong and Macau anymore. It’s just more economical to stay in mainland even if I want to visit Hong Kong and Macau. Granted Hong Kong and Macau are cleaner and more developed than mainland but places like Shenzhen isn’t far behind. The only advantage Hong Kong and Macau have is unfettered Internet access. I eat better and stay in bigger hotel rooms when I am in mainland.

While some comments here make sense, some are pure delusional. Agree that Shenzhen is more technologically advanced in infrastructure compared to HK, but comments implying HK is second-tier city or below top 20 Chinese cities? Like it or not, HK is still the city with the highest HDI in Asia and frequently ranks among top 3 financial centers of the world. It has the second highest GDP per capita in China, and despite its small size/population compared to even other prefecture cities (1/4 population of most ranking above it), it has the 6th highest GDP. Shenzhen and new cities do indeed have better infrastructures, but whatever criticism falls on HK, the same is gonna fall on old-school cities like Shanghai. It is difficult to build in existing space compared to building in new.
