But keep in mind that Lhatoo slips in the key takeaway near the end (starting at 2:28): “Of course China will be hurt as well,” he says. He even explains that China will have to inflict retaliatory tariffs on U.S. goods. That is true. And guess who pays those? The Chinese! 😉 Americans (and really most people in most countries that do trade with other countries) totally understand that they pay the tariffs imposed by their leaders. It’s always been that way, and contrary to Lhatoo’s rant, most westerners KNOW this. Most of Dumb Don’s supporters, sadly, do not. lol Tariffs are designed, in part, to level unfair trade imbalances, something China has in spades thanks to cheap labor, low wages, rampant counterfeiting, and a serious lack of regulations. Trump goes overboard, like always, but the reactions from various countries to his tariffs prove that they are effective, even when they seem petty. Cheers!

If tariffs are coupled with reductions in sales or income tax, and there are non-tariffed options for consumers, then a targeted tariff strategy has a chance of having its desired effect without causing hardship on the working class. Regardless, the U.S. needs to wake up to the fact that industrial self-reliance is critical for national security. Also, non-idiots in the U.S. have been pointing out for years that those red hats are made in China. I recently bought a locally made snap-back hat, so it’s not like it’s impossible.

That's a lot of optimism you're forcing into was is objectively an awful international business strategy. You are massively overestimating the US's ability to immediately adapt to a self-reliant model especially when other countries will only increase their trade elsewhere as a result of this. You don't get to bully the entire world into serving your country.

On one hand, America says it wants their manufacturing back, but on the other hand, America is actively kicking the people who are willing to do these jobs out. Even if somehow, all these "local" companies are willing to spend billions for these factories to get built, and somehow they find employees, where do the raw materials comes from to do the actual manufacturing? Where and how are these companies making their billions of investments back? What do you think the prices of goods will be then?

Lowering tariffs only makes sense if you expect peaceful cooperation with the other nation, in this case China. If you expect war, tariffs become a bargaining chip to incentivize de-escalation with their removal. Ideally, there would be no tariffs and there would be free trade. But likewise there would be peace without war.

It's actually very simple. If a seller has to lose because of the tariff, then the better choice is not to sell or sell it elsewhere. What is the point of selling if you don't get a profit but lose? If a seller has to bear the tariff, then the amount of the tariff will be included in the selling price (increasing the selling price), which in the end will still be the end buyer (consumer) who pays more.

High tariffs will make it too expensive to import products into the United States. This will cause shortages. American companies will raise their prices. American billionaires will get richer. American consumers will get poorer.

How do people not know this? I learned way back in school that tariffs exist to encourage people to buy local and support local businesses... It's not a hard concept...

He skips around the issue of China using unfair tactics like not paying their own employees. He skips over the entire fact they also are dumping to cause local businesses (not just American) to compete against but they have to follow global laws with regards to trade and local salaries If China sells EVs for half as much as the western world does this mean they are just doing it for cheaper? Yes but ask why or how (as in Government subsidies in China) N.America is fine paying for their services and jobs. Knowing China is trying to attack with policies that counter the western world in general China loses jobs with the tariffs, America loses if they keep allowing China to break the standards of global competition and trade. The whole point of globalization is to create a reliance on each country so they don't fight wars. We can plainly see there are those who don't care (on both sides) it's the people who suffer on both sides

Ah yes, China who has endless fund and can subsidize all of its industry What stop America from doing the same? Well the company will take the money and go manufacture in Mexico, China or India. As long as the US dollar remains as strong as it is right now, there is no benefit to manufacturing into the US. So sure, you can decide to become a close economy, like the URSS was, which the US could pull off, but that means leaving the rest of the world to China, since nobody in the Global south is going to follow that strategy. American benefits from a strong dollar, to bring back manufacturing one thing you need is to weaken the currency, which will make American poorer.

If what you say is true, then why national leaders like Xi Jinping are so nervous about Trump tariffs ? And what does China sell to US that are so vital that Americans cannot live with ?
