Hong Kong's biggest political crisis since its return to mainland China, starts with an ill-conceived plan by the government for an extradition law to allow the transfer of suspects for trial to Taiwan, Macau and mainland China. It sparks a massive public backlash, drawing millions of protesters onto the streets. By the time the government agrees to drop the extradition bill, events on the streets have overtaken them and Hong Kong spirals out of control. The police, using tear gas and firing rubber bullets to disperse the crowds, find themselves overwhelmed by public resentment and hatred.
Hong Kong descends into months of fiery street battles with anger and frustration touching every corner of the city. While the coronavirus pandemic brings a halt to anti-government protests, Beijing is determined not to allow a repeat of the past year’s chaos. But society remains fractured, the old resentments run deep, and the future is uncertain.

As a Brit its frankly shameless seeing that man speak. British police are highly professional and, while they aren't perfect, they try hard to protect the community and uphold a rules based order. Seeing this British officer (who had transitioned over from the '97 handover) supporting the Chinese government goes against everything the idea of English Common Law policing stands for. Supporting a tyrannical government is treason against the people.

I believe that Hong Kong has been and always will be part of China. It is culturally similar, and the language is also similar, aside from speaking Cantonese. I believe that the people of Hong Kong should listen to the CCP so they won’t be hated by the government that much to be oppressed. I do believe there are things the the PRC needs to change but overall, these protests are just going to get even more bloodier and violent if the people of Hong Kong doesn’t listen. From the PRC 🇨🇳 and in the United States 🇺🇸.

I’m a resident and I can confirm it’s really bad now. Since the national security law was passed, we can’t really criticise the government and the Democratic Party is completely abolished. Because of carona, it’s illegal to have gatherings over 4 people and since we value our health we can’t protests as easily. I have 0 faith in the government at this point and my hatred of it is growing with each day. In the next school year, liberal studies, which is about examine current events, will be cut from the syllabus and replaced with National education, which is basically propaganda. Yesterday, my school mandatorily had to hand out stickers that had “Support National Security Laws and protect your home” printed on it. I’m honestly disgusted. What used to be a shinning beacon of city and not to mention, my home is being ruined. 70% of residents distrust the government (according to polls in 2019) and I can tell you way more of us do now. I’m sick and tired of China’s and Winnie’s BS. I know our chances for change are slim, but I can at least try and I am saddened by the fact that I may have to immigrate to avoid the CCP. On another note, the media is somewhat one-sided. A LOT of people are anti-government we just can’t say it too openly and mass media (usually having ties with CCP) portrays our protests as overtly violence and uncalled for. Besides, Western governments aren’t doing as much as they can to help us and people are losing interest in our story, leaving us to defend for ourselves.

Only those who actively fight against freedom are capable of terrorism. All riots where the people rebel against an oppressive government or demand an end to oppression are nothing more than human beings doing their job as human beings. That's why i support the Black Lives Matter Protests here in the US (Even as many of them have turned into riots, something i would normally stand against). Our Government ignored our attempts to be kind and peaceful in our fight to cancel Systemic Racism. They should count themselves lucky it's businesses that are being destroyed and not their homes and work places. Some day though, systemic racism will end, and the riots will follow pursuit, or the Government will be the protestors next target, as the US becomes the modern version of 1790's France.

Because they state is the only party allowed to commit violence? That always leaves the working man at the feet of those in charge. Remaining stagnant and allowing the police and your freedom to be taken because you're afraid of violence, well, you just haven't ever had to fight for your freedom have you? It sounds easy in times of peace to criticize violence, and it is. But I'm fairly sure many Polish people decided to fight back against the Nazi's when they invaded. And some had to be shot, because, well we can't have people breaking the law now right? Sure it's a law written by the nazi's, but it's still the law right? Violence isn't the answer. @@keisukekei5914 Problem is that the police incited this by bein the instigators. The protestors originally, all they had were regular masks, signs and eventually umbrellas. They barricaded using their bodies, not violence, this type of protesting is legitimate and non-destructive. When police keeps increasing their level of violence, you justify the minds of radical thinkers who then rely on mob mentality to recruit people who otherwise would be civil. Mob mentality is strong, it's a genetic tool we humans have, it's a survival tool. That's why as government and police, the last thing you should do is anything to incite that age old instinct. The same goes for the protestors, the more force you respond with, the police will have to as well. Although it's painful and unjust, you enable the corrupt government to take unjust decisions and create unfair laws when you respond in too much force. Because now they can paint you as criminals to the rest of the world, where as if you remain a sensible level of violence (only respond with equal or less force as a form of defense), then the government is unable to proceed with further violence. Because they will start treading the lines of human rights, this is a very powerful tool to have when recruiting international help. This will temporarily put less power in the protesters hand, but after the swing, it will give them massive control. Instigators always have a huge disadvantage in any situation, which is why as protesters you want to make sure to never blur that line with your own violence, to make the contrast between you and the oppposition as large as humanly possible. Not to mention you can use the humanity of the police, guilt and shame will bleed into their minds as time goes by, some are immune to it, but majority isn't. Because they're the same people, they feel empathy. These tactics are effective but incredibly slow, but they avoid letting government justify reactive law making and using violence. Rather than giving them a justification, they have to break the line themselves, thereby painting themselves as objectively the bad guys, to everyone else.

But for the past 2 years police have been barricading Victoria Park (where the ceremony usually takes place) with "COVID social-distancing" as reason to prevent people from going in. So yea freedom of speech has definitely been clamped down a huge notch here... I'm the kind of person who values prosperity and peace over violence and far-left movements, but I'm still upset that I can't vote for my own Chief Executive. I feel like people like me (the so-called Blue activists) and people who are more left (called Yellow activists) are 50/50 in Hong Kong, with many of the Yellow activists immigrating elsewhere. The National Security Law made police have unprecedented power to arrest protestors or people who dare to chant "Hong Kong Independence".. it's a scary time for democratic advocates to live here now. Nevertheless, I love Hong Kong. This is my home, my hood, my favorite city in the world. Aside from politics, the job market is still vibrant, delicious cuisines from cheap to expensive are ubiquitous, tons of hiking trails and sea water for boat parties, beautiful women :) there's a lot to appreciate here.
