Kinda rubbed the wrong way because personally, I remember my mom laughing at me while I cried. I don't think she remembers but it was hurtful as a child because I didn't understand why she was laughing while I cried. The mom says she knows her well so I hope the girl forgets about it when she's older. I think we don't realise how much of this impacts children and their unconscious memory.

When I teach my kids around 8 years old to ride a bike . I know the kids will fall over and would scratch their legs. I would laugh and tell then to get up by themselves. To me personally. It makes my kids stronger. I tell my kids everything you do in life you will need to work for it yourself ❤❤

A loss for everybody. Child is crying. The parents don't console them in fear of creating bad behavior so they laugh it off in front of their child. You don't have to teach kids everything they learn that their mother is laughing so she gets ideas in her head that she isn't loved. So she compensates and copes with it unhealthily- in an immature manner. And later when the kids grows up day by day she will remember how she reacted to the situation and now it's subconscious and they say why she is like that. The relationship is strained. She fails at things. And the parents wonder what wrong did I do. Clearly the child is spoiled😮wow.

@@Meowsofat I think about how in the early days of video cameras there was "home movies" which could definitely be embarrassing but any one who saw them most likely had to come to your house to watch, so mostly family and friends might occasionally watch memories or moments during gatherings. In the US the clip show America's Funniest home videos was popular and offered cash prizes for aired submissions but people weren't anywhere near trying to make "content". The social media score system of likes and shares and views and potential advertising revenue is often a negative cycle of "content creation" versus life documentation with video.

We can move on cuz they're our mom, but we certainly don't forget. Idk how this little girl will grow up with this memory, it'll be up to her, so idk if it'll be damaging or not, depends on each person, but her mom certainly won't be the one to decide whether she'll be fine or not, so she really can't say the whole 'oh I know she'll be okay because I know what she's like'. Part of life, before life becomes harsh when you become an adult, the first pair of people who showcase how imperfect crass or honorable and beautiful human beings can be are parents. Keeping extreme toxicity aside, tough situations build strength and character, however this girl seems too young to cope with it. I would have a different stamp of approval/disapproval if the girl was above 10 years of age.

As a Chinese Canadian, I assume that those who criticize the behavior of the little girl are not Chinese let alone Asian so they have little to no idea just how much her parents push her to succeed academically. Because if I was still 5 years old and got an exercise book as a gift, I would interpret that as punishment and be disappointed if not visible upset as she was. Nonetheless I do blame her parents for not instilling an interest in reading books at a young age and instead it appears only giving her exercise books to do all the time

The girl is 5 and she knew what the work book is about. For my 3 years old daughter her grandma gave her a preschool work book for Christmas and she was very happy because she doesn't know what studying feels like and there is no pressure.

I'm actually confused with the girl's reaction. A lot of my tutoring kids like exercise books too because exercise books they have at home have interesting short-sentence stories, math activities with pictures and etc. They like to do them with their mom and dad a lot and have a lot of them. They are not cheap by the way. They are in bilinguals, or in English and imported.

@@jessicag630 there's a difference in how you teach your kids vs how parents in china teach their kids. you most likely taught them to love learning and challenging themselves because you've taught them that they're smart/hardworking/capable, etc. while most parents in china teach their kids to hate learning and doing chores (aka homeworks/practice questions) because they've taught them that they're dumber than their classmates, lazy, and punishable if they don't meet their standards. I was born and raised in china and lived there for 15yrs before getting out, throughout my childhood i've experience first hand and witnessed how messed up chinese education is. Even when I was in elementary school, i've heard people in china call the american education the happy education and chinese education the beating and scolding education.

@@jessicag630maybe your kids weren’t traumatised by studying yet. The moment I got into Kindergarten my parents pressured me into studying, but giving me little to study with. Each day I was taken home my mother would ask “Have you learned the alphabet yet?” Or “Can you count now?”. They would often shame me for playing, telling me I was lazy and why I wouldn’t study. If the “helped” me with “school exercises” it was just further traumatising, since they’d yell and become physical, when I made mistakes. From an early age I associated learning and studying with the pressure and stress. It wasn’t about learning but performing. I’m still carrying that today as an adult, but am rediscovering how to find the joy and fun in learning again.

My dad tricked my brother into thinking he only got a card (he actually wrapped both my and by brother's gift in the same wrap to look like a single box). My brother was 9 and he was felt humiliated because my dad was laughing at his reaction. He still remembers that day 24 years later.

I remember my dad doing stuff like that to me. I laugh now just thinking about it. Honestly for me. Those were the best times. I always got what I wanted. My parents just liked to have fun. I remember the important things like my Parents always gave me what I needed. And if playing jokes on us helped them get through the tough times with a little bit of laughter. I am happy to have provided them with it. I haven't forgotten nor do I hold one once of anger towards them for it. As a matter of fact, I think it was awesome.

I didn't get them as gifts, but I got them both when I struggled and when I did well, and they weren't even that related to my studies. All they did was confuse and frustrate me and my parents clearly didn't have a clear plan of what they were even supposed to add to my education. Felt more like a "bragging rights" thing than "how do I help my child understand their learning in school" type of thing, and I'm STILL bitter about it 10+ years later.

Look, many people on social media in China also admonished the mother after what she did. They felt really sorry for her. Some people prank their kids in US too, instigated by a host from a show! The parents pranked their kids by telling them that they had eaten all their Halloween sweets the morning after and film their kids getting very angry or crying in distress! This and the comments below are bringing back all the bad memories of being caned for getting a fail because I was bullied at school and couldn't concentrate in class due to the bullying. Of being threatened with a cane when I nodded off due to sheer exhaustion because I was still forced to study at midnight. Of being told I was a disappointment when I got 10As instead of 11 in my O-Levels, and again for 2As and 2Bs in my A-levels. To this day, I'm still a disappointment for not making it into an Ivy League university despite having graduated with honours. I'm still in contact with my mom, but guess what? I don't love her anymore. Surprise, surprise, when you ill-treat your children, they will never forget.

The kid did the right thing as a kid. This isn't a mistake. This is how kids should act. Now the parents should console them and say that it's ok and accept their emotions and say that they feel them and say that whatever they are feeling is natural however correct them with love in a mature manner with understanding of why and reason with them- love should be a guiding force in disciplining kids. Understanding them, loving them for that, teaching them what is right and thinking and caring for others but keeping them at the center. This isn't spoiling the kids. I think sometimes parents can't help but laugh but they should def make up for it and explain stuff and move on. To teach them how to react in an acceptable manner without losing their authentic emotions and feelings. The parents should ask for forgiveness from their child because children know they are being betrayed. To a child it's a serious thing and it should be. If this wasn't the case children wouldn't be taken care of. They would not understand how their parents could do such a thing if they didn't throw tantrums. As the kid grows up and naturally develops reason. They will correct themselves rather than berate them. First acknowledge their feelings and then address their problems. Se. Them where they are at.

So in this situation the mother did lie about it being a gift/present since the child really did not like the exercise book. Of course, I would also say that throwing the book at the mom is not correct, instead throwing it on the ground or backwards gets the message across just right for getting her point across.

Even if she doesn't remember this incident specifically (though she likely might with the emotion here and them laughing at her distress) they keep doing things like this she is going to know she can't trust her parents and what they say. It means she might not go to them when she needs to because they are not a safe place for her. We need to stop acting like children are just tiny adults we can treat any which way with no consequences. It is how you make maladjusted adults.

To be fair, we really don’t have context for this interaction besides what we see. It a child does many exercises over and over rote from a book, you can see how it isn’t fun. It isn’t just the belief that learning isn’t fun - it’s how we teach. Course, I don’t have any insight to provide myself - I grew up grinding with exercises just like the one shown in the video 😅

In my birthdays I always received japanese pens, colored pencils and educational books, with cute stamps and shapes, to motivate me during the studies. Thanks to that I grew up liking to write, draw and learn. I think that mom should talk properly with the girl to show her how interesting studying really is. To be able to understand people from all over the world, to understand the nature, etc.

When I was young I would stare for a long time at my newly painted BRIGHT RED nails. To me, my painted nails looked sooo beautiful, like little red jewels I couldn't be more delighted. If I got a marker, my legs would be my canvass, I just enjoyed seeing pretty lines, patterns, and colors, just like a normal kid. And of course, I outgrew it all when I got older. Now as an adult, I don't use nail polish, or make up, not into bright colors and fancy things but I'm still very feminine. LOL So the point is, kids love things like bright colors, rainbows and unicorns simply because they are "pretty". It's the same as obsessing over candy and all sweet foods.

Imagine being a young child struggling in school, and your parents get you a workbook as a gift and point a camera at you giggling while you're crying afterwards. This is terrible parenting. If a child is struggling academically, the best thing to do is work with them on their classwork. Sit at the table with them and explain things they're confused about. Taking their toys or games, or doing something like this, will just make them feel like a failure and they wont want to try.

I understand it's mean, however I sympathize with the little girl in the video. I also had a hard time studying when I was little. I was academically slower than my peers. That was surely mean, but I feel that the lil girl was just confused, hurted, upset 'in the moment'. It was a subtle way for the parents to tease and encourage her in her studies. After a while, I'm sure just as we saw that she was truly encouraged to do the exercise book even though it may be hard for her (I also cried a lot like her while studying and answering exercise books before). Daymn, I get that China is overly competitive even for young kids. But she's 5 years old, literally kindergarten age, bruuuhhh. Are they expecting her to be among the highest in rank?
