Southeast Alaska, beginning in Ketchikan, Metlakatla, Sitka, Juneau and others, is the traditional homeland of the Tlingit, Haida and Tsimshian and is rich in Indian culture, wood carving and totem. Wood carving, as an art form, reflects all the Native cultures connecting with the environment. The wood materials used come from the forest and the forms usually represent animals, spirits or places.

God, I wish it wasn't so political to work as an artist. Half the time when you sell or even just create, you are judged by those who are insecure, so if you make someone who's been at it for years insecure, your career is already in the worst conflict and struggle, having to go outside the regular connections for your art, having your name tarnished by others eventually being disregarded for so much as just drawing a design out for people. Happen with many my friends because of innovative designs just to get shunned, eventually ideas taken and trademarked by the very people who condemned them. Why I'm a huge advocate of practice what you love when it comes to art and don't be deterred, otherwise we lose what's most important, the fact that Art is the most open culture and accepting community with the best standards because anything can become art and its based off passion and emotion rather than color or geography.
