I enjoyed your vlog, I can't think you were rested when you got back home! When we get out of the city into the bushveld we stay at least 2 weeks to rest, in other words you just take in the beauty and rest but I doubt teenagers would want to rest that much. Africa needs to get into your heart, it seemed like you had a very busy schedule. I encourage you to come for longer; pick your favoirite places and spend time there... do it in such a way that if you want to stay longer at a certain place you can. If you want a beach vacation in Cape Town come Desember - March, good weather... If you want to see wild life , winter is best, May - July. Thank you for making the vlog, had tears in my eyes... Africa is a kingdom of beauty!

@@jozac05 thanks buddy ... I guess your trip will be relatively short so I think that these identified points of visit will leave lasting memories. Get I car here ..some cheep rental ...the distances are huge . SA has close to 3000km ( 1800 miles ) of the most breathtaking coastal line which has to be seen ... from scorching Kalahari desert , the most succulent rain forests of Eastern Cape ... the majestic Drakensberg Mountains right to the edge of the African continent down south you will have the opportunity to see the world in one country ! After Kruger park I would suggest a short visit to lake St Lucia in KwaZulu Natal ... there you can see one of the most spectacular biodiversity on this planet . iSimangaliso Wetland Park has been listed as South Africa's first World Heritage Site and if you are nature lover ...photographer or just curious to see large number of crocodiles, hippos, pelicans, flamingos, elephants, giraffes and leopards this is a must visit destination. If you are planning some backpacking trips ..there is a long list of recommended well maintain places around the coast line along your route towards Western Cape. Is it safe ? ... well ... without been overly optimistic I would not be surprised if you leave the country with a positive impression in this regard. The people here are friendly ... however do not take alone any risky visits to townships especially after dark .. this is Africa after all ! ... having said that, I am absolutely convinced that in these places one can meet the most interesting people ever ...

Hey. This is a great video! We’re heading to Cape Town / Simon’s Town for 2 weeks in April 2020! If I may, I have 2 questions. 1) How was the weather for you? It looked lovely despite it being winter there! 2) Did you feel safe? Since booking our trip our family keep telling us about how unsafe it is. However, with the right precautions and attitude towards it, I think it will be just fine. We’re doing Airb&b throughout with the first 3 nights in seapoint and the last 9 nights in Simon’s Town.
@CarrieCook5 жыл бұрын
Thank you! Yes, we had amazing weather, and I know we were very lucky in that regard. We were in the Cape Town area from August 14-18, and weather was very pleasant and sunny, with highs in the high teens or low twenties (Celsius). But, when we arrived, we heard that they had just come off of 8 straight days of rain. I would think that if you are there in April, the odds of you having good weather are more favourable than our odds were. And yes, we did feel very safe. We were quite cautious, and had heard the same stories you have before we left. We stayed in the Victoria & Alfred waterfront area in Cape Town, and felt quite safe walking around there at night. We were also in Simons Town after dark, and felt OK there. We did not take valuables on our township tour, but even there we felt better about our surroundings than we expected to. Not to say that bad things can't happen, but I think if you have heightened awareness and take some basic precautions, there is no reason why you can't go and enjoy yourself. It is a wonderful destination!

Thank you for sharing a truly inspiring video of what looks to have been a fabulous adventure for you and your family. I stumbled across your video as we are contemplating a first trip to Africa with our two girls, who would be aged 11 and 9 at the date of travel. I’m nervous about taking a trip like this with them but I’m encouraged by the happy and confident vibe from your children. I am wondering whether you’d be willing to share whether you stopped overnight enroute to Kruger and also back to the airport? Also interested to hear whether you would make any changes to your trip with the benefit of experience? Any tips would be much appreciated. I’m a big planner but am only just starting out with the research. Your video is a fabulous first step so thank you!
@CarrieCook5 жыл бұрын
Don't be nervous about it - this is a perfect family-friendly destination! We did stop overnight en route to Kruger - we took an early morning flight from Cape Town to Johannesburg, and then drove to Hazyview before dusk. From there, it was about 15-20 minutes to the park gate early the next morning. Heading back to the airport, we stopped in Pilgrim's Rest for the night, which roughly split the drive in half. (I should also say here that we actually did the Panorama Route on our way back from Kruger, rather than on our way to the park, as shown in the video.) Honestly, there isn't anything I can think of that I would change about our trip. I only wish we'd had more time!

Thank you and kind regards! keep doing great content

Thank you for your kind words! In Victoria Falls we stayed at the Kingdom Hotel, and in Cape Town we stayed at the Radisson Red V&A Waterfront. At Victoria Falls, we booked the Devil's Pool trip as well as the day trip to Chobe National Park with a tour operator called Shockwave. They also did our transfers to/from the airport. In Cape Town, we arranged the Langa Township tour through Siviwe Tours, and we used Howie's Transport for our airport transfers and our day trip to the Cape. I hope that helps - good luck planning your trip - you will have an amazing time!

Sorry, my mistake - Chad just pointed out to me that we booked the Devil's Pool tour directly through Tongabezi, who are the exclusive tour agent for trips to the Pool. Other tour operators will book the trip for you, but they are all outsourced to Tongabezi in the end.

Beautiful! I want to go next year but I don't know where to begin the planning process. Do you have any tips? Was it all done through a travel agency? Thanks! :)

Hi there, we didn't use a travel agency for our trip - we planned it ourselves. If you are thinking about doing something similar, my best tip would be to check out what itineraries the package tours offer. What sites do they visit? How much time do they allow for transportation between them, and what type of transportation do they use? How long do they stay in each place? Typically they do a good job of including the top attractions in each location, but you can also choose to leave out things you aren't interested in and use that time to see something else instead. This will allow you to start constructing a high level itinerary for yourself. Next I would focus on the transportation, to make sure that you can actually follow your itinerary - make sure there are options for flights/trains/etc. on the days you need them. Accommodations come next, because you can generally find a place to stay when you need to. However - if you are thinking about a safari in Kruger National Park, you might want to look into accommodations there sooner rather than later, as I think they book up well in advance and might be a limiting factor. Good luck!!

Great video, Carrie! I enjoy your videos. You mentioned that you took this trip in August. If you don't mind me asking, did you guys visit in early, mid, or late August? We have targeted Cape Town as our next family trip for early August, but the Mrs. is somewhat hesitant to go at that time due to it still being winter that time of year. How cool was it during the time you were there?

Thanks so much! We were in the Cape Town area specifically from August 14-17. Our daytime high temps were probably in the 15-20 degrees C range, and overnight down to maybe 10-12 degrees C. We were lucky to get some really nice clear weather while we were there which is not always the case at that time of year, but just goes to show that you never know what you will get! Good luck with your trip.

We don't generally use tour guides, and instead book most of our transport and activities on our own. In Victoria Falls, we did use Shockwave for both our airport transfers and our day trip to Chobe National Park in Botswana. And in Cape Town, we used Howie's Transport for our airport transfers as well as our day trip to the Cape of Good Hope. On safari, if you are staying at a lodge inside Kruger, they will handle all your logistics, providing accommodation, food, and your guided game drives. They can also arrange your travel for you, though we chose to drive ourselves from Johannesburg to the park. We use Trip Advisor quite extensively to plan our intineraries, get reviews and recommendations for activities and lodging, etc. The forums there are a great resource if you're looking to plan a trip. Hope that helps!

The best vlog I've seen on KZbin! Your video is amazing and loving the candid moments by your kids and husband! What are some of the lodges that you guys stayed at Kruger? As we're heading there end of next month!

Thank you for your kind words! While in Kruger, we split our time between two lodges, Hoyo Hoyo Safari Lodge and Hamilton's Tented Camp. They are sister lodges, close together, both on the Mluwati Concession. We also spent one night outside the park gate in Hazyview at Hippo Hollow Country Estate (not featured in the video).

Many thanks! Would I go back - without a doubt. It's hard to pick a favourite trip that I have been on, but I would have to say South Africa in particular is the most beautiful place I have visited.
