I’m sorry to say that is a myth. I’ve lived in the south for 16 years, and the people who have been the most friendly, open and generous with me have been outsiders.

@@cindland There are good and bad everywhere. And every person's experience is different. In my own experience, there seems to be a lot more generosity in the less populated areas of the South and Midwest.

I think it depends on the person, and you can find generous and kind people everywhere. I used to work in New York City, and I knew a lot of very kind, generous people there. So I don't think any region or state has a corner on "nice" folks.

A honky-tonk is both a bar that provides country music for the entertainment of its patrons and the style of music played in such establishments. It can also refer to the type of piano used to play such music. Bars of this kind are common in the South and Southwest United States. Most bars seen in western movies are honky tonks.
