I’ve never set eyes on a camellia until I moved to SE Virgina last fall. They’re blooming all over town. Beautiful. They’re evocative of gallica roses (without any scent)

I love camellias! I can personally vouch for the camellia sasanqua 'Jean May' being easy to grow. And she is beautiful and is always covered in buds and blooms starting late October into early January here in zone 7b. I planted a contorted camellia a few months ago. I hope it does as well. Thanks for the info (I have been out camellia shopping today!)!

Hey! Thanks for this video! I’ve never even considered Camellia’s until watching your videos and now I’ve planted two from Plants by Mail :-) Funny that you mention that you see these a lot around old houses. Just helped my son clean out shrubs that were absolutely swallowing a cute little old house he’s renting. It has camellias all around and one is an unbelievably beautiful crimson red. I’ve never seen one like it. Such a rich color. I presume it’s a Japonica - since it’s blooming now in late winter?? I will be following your camellia propagation videos later this year in hopes of propagating a few for myself :-). Keep up the great work! You’re teaching me so much!

I would love to plant a privacy screen with these and gardenias. And maybe that evergreen empress dogwood that has been mentioned in some videos. My back fence line is probably most shade and I’m in a zone 7. Southern Mid/ western NC.

I love Camellias, just planted October Magic Ruby, Rose, Diana, Dawn, Alabama Beauty, Early Wonder and many more in our hillside under our Pine trees. Thank you for your videos, I'm so inspired can't wait to start planting but it's been raining and cold in Northeast, MS.

I found a variety that are suitable for zone 6, I may have to get a few.

Yes, the Ackerman hybrids are hardy into zone 6. I would definitely spring plant them

They are all hardy in zone 7. I never use them in super windy areas. They do take a little winter burn in the open.

Really anytime. I wouldn't take one out of a house and plant it in the winter, but other than that no problem. Absolute best time in the fall.

I moved here from Lewisville, in North Texas, but don't remember ever seeing Camellias. Of course, I didn't know about them then so probably wouldn't have recognized them. Are you in northeast TX, or pure north? Knowing what I know now, I can't imagine having grown them in Lewisville's heat.

One of our Camellia Japonicas has a lot of flower buds huge ones. Someone advised us to remove flower buds if they are in clusters so they can give a better bloom. Now I don’t want to remove them lol. Is it necessary? 💚💚💚💚💚💚💚

It's only necessary if you are going to be competing in Camellia flower competitions. Be careful with Camellia folks, they will have you gibbing and only talking about Camellias with anyone that will listen 😂.

Yes, very hardy perennials. They will outlive us. Good container plants but not fond of frozen roots

That is usually an iron deficiency. Can be caused from a high pH or being overly wet
