A crack in crown sheet wouldn't end the locomotives carrer. Firebox sheets are consumable and where routinely replaced throughout any steam engines service life. Gotta build the drama toward a climax lol. I've heard enough from this video.

In 1974, 4449 was selected to pulled the American Freedom Train Bicentennial Celebration of our country, 200th Anniversary.

It's a locomotive. The "engine" is the running gear of a steam locomotive. My recollection is that after its last revenue run in 1955 pulling the Coast Daylight it was stored in L.A. until 1958 whe it was stupidly sent to the City of Portland. Never could understand that. They demonstrated what a mistake that turned out to be.

We can all thank Jack Doyle for keeping 4449's running gear in good condition until his death in 1972. Had he not done so, 4449 likely wouldn't have been eligable for the Freedom Train.

No, 844 was a coal burner the first year of its life before being converted to oil in 1945
