This video shows an NS local crew getting ready for their days work at Spartanburg's Hayne Yard. Watch as the local crew starts up their 2 Southern engines, a GP30 and B30-7A1. Then they head off into the yard to pick up their train. A few shots of some of the cars in the yard are included. Then, the next shot shows the local freight running by the Amtrak station headed back to Hayne Yard after finishing their assigned work.

Thanks for sharing this. Sad to see the remaining high hoods getting cut up and that admiral cab being scabbed on. I know it makes sense and NS is a business but it doesn't change the fact that I would get a thrill every time I saw one of the old high hoods working. Most of them even still were lettered SOU in smaller letters under the window letting me know where they came from. Nearest I can tell the crews hated the high hoods and are glad to see them go. I will miss them.

Southern Railway ran high hoods so they could draw a head from either end. This is what my father told me, he was a SR trainman, started working in 1948.

I love the EMD high hoods, but those old GE's just look like a shoebox with a cab on them...lol. Maybe good for a battering ram, but looks ugly! Oh wait, they're all scrapped now, so it might actually be a battering ram now! LOL!!! Still love the classic footage my friend! Keep them coming! I wish you guys would paint a heritage unit or 3-4 in the black tux like these... :)

***** actually the reason the SOU ordered high hoods was this. On most SOU locomotives, the long hood is the front and the short hood is the rear, however On the gp30s, the ge's, and a few others, the short hood is the front. SOU did that for added crew protection in case of a collision with a vehicle. Thus, almost all the SOU locomotives have high short hoods and run long hood forward.

dumb question, lol but what does the "A1" in b-30-7A1?
@SOU5111
@SOU5111 5 жыл бұрын
The B30-7A1 was purchased only by Southern Railway and used a 7FDL12 prime mover and turbocharger to achieve 3,000 hp; unlike the B30-7 which used 7FDL16 prime mover to generate 3,000 hp . The 22 B30-7A1's had relocated blower equipment from the radiator section the the cab end of the hood. This was done to accomadate the Southern's request for more powerful dynamic brakes.

@@SOU5111 what do the letters after the cab number mean on Southern units??
@SOU5111
@SOU5111 5 жыл бұрын
@@onrr1726 That is the old "computer check code" letter. Early in the computer era, Southern came up with the letter after the number in locomotives to designate the difference from freight cars with similar numbers.
