Five former Southern four-axle units were working hard to get train 171 started again from Beaumont Jct and up the grade towards Magnolia St in Spartanburg. Back in the late 80's this was my favorite train to catch with the older power putting on a show dragging the heavy tonnage train towards Hayne Yard. Many times this train would get stopped for higher priority trains at Beaumont, the junction with the NS Atlanta-Linwood main line, on the way back from Columbia, SC. This train still used a caboose back then, with a Southern bay window cab being on the rear this day.

What does that sign that has 3 black lines, with a dot in the middle?

Awesome! Amazing how the power strategy is so much different now, back then it was all 4 axle for most trains, now it's very rare to see the 4's pulling anything on the mains other than transfers or locals...Thanks for sharing! It's always great to see the classic Southern tux paint!!! Thumbs up my friend and favorite!

One of the best videos I have ever seen of my favorite railroad and time period. The speed of the train really let's you see the rolling stock and examine all the details. This is a moving reference guide. Thanks for this.

If I remember correctly, some of the traffic off of 171 went up the A&S line across the famed Saluda Grade.

I love the fact that you shoot the entire train. There is so much too see besides the Southern units on the head end. So many fallen flags represented in the consist. Definitely a time line for the era. Thanks for posting, Brian Rackley

@benschlechter That was the Southern Railway's style of whistle post. It let the engineer know to sound the horn for a road crossing...two longs (the top two lines), one short (the dot) and one more long (the bottom line). Thanks for watching and commenting!
