Southern Right Whales Mating in Argentina

Here is a spectacular and rare video showing the mating rituals of southern right whales that I filmed off the coast of Peninsula Valdes, Argentine Patagonia in September 2023. Filmed under Government permit.
Peninsula Valdes is a Patagonian nature reserve and UNESCO World Heritage Site located on the coast of Argentina.
It is home to the globally most important breeding grounds of the southern right whales, that from June to December migrate from the cold waters of Antarctica to the warm and protected waters of the Peninsula to meet other whales, mate, give birth and take care of their calves.
I traveled to this untamed area to film the southern right whales and I witnessed one of nature's greatest events: the whales mating ritual, one of the most impressive manifestations of nature that I have ever had the privilege to see.
Their mating system is polyandrous, meaning that several males participate in mating with one female.
As shown in the video the female is surrounded by two males. She is not yet ready to mate and rolls over on her back to keep her genital region away from her suitors. While the female is hovering belly up the males seem to work in coordination to achieve copulation. Avoiding mating though is not an easy task when a male is as formidably equipped as a right whale. With a body weight that can exceed 60 tons, male right whales have one of the largest penises in nature, a 12 foot (4 meters) long (a quarter of their body length) and highly mobile penis. After a while the female has changed her mind, she rights herself and dives down leaving the surface. She is now ready to mate. The female can copulate with one or several males on the same day. Male right whales have gigantic testicles, the largest in the animal kingdom. They weigh a ton and produce gallons of sperm. One coupling can flush out whatever preceded it so it may not be the first male who succeeded in copulating who becomes the father. It will be the last. The females that mated in the previous season approach the coasts of Peninsula Valdes, that are protected from the wind and storms, to give birth to their young. The gestation period of the whale calf is estimated between 12 and 13 months and births usually occur between the months of July and October.

La Penisola di Valdes è una riserva naturale della Patagonia e patrimonio mondiale dell' UNESCO situata sulla costa argentina. Ospita le zone di riproduzione più importanti a livello mondiale delle balene franche australi, che da giugno a dicembre migrano dalle acque fredde dell'Antartide alle acque calde e protette della Penisola per incontrare altre balene, accoppiarsi, partorire e prendersi cura dei propri piccoli. Sono andato in questa regione incontaminata per filmare le balene franche australi e ho assistito a uno dei più grandiosi spettacoli della natura: il rituale di accoppiamento delle balene, una delle manifestazioni della natura più impressionanti che abbia mai avuto il privilegio di vedere.
Il loro sistema riproduttivo è poliandrico, il che significa che diversi maschi partecipano all'accoppiamento con una femmina.
Come si vede nel video la femmina è circondata da due maschi. Non è ancora pronta per l'accoppiamento e si gira sulla schiena nel tentativo di tenere la regione genitale lontana dai corteggiatori. Mentre la femmina e’a pancia in su, i maschi sembrano lavorare in coordinazione per realizzare la copula. Evitare l'accoppiamento, però, non è un compito facile quando un maschio è straordinariamente dotato come una balena franca. Con un peso che può superare le 60 tonnellate, i maschi di balena franca hanno uno dei peni più grandi in natura, lungo 4 metri (pari a un quarto della lunghezza del loro corpo) ed estremamente flessibile. Dopo un po' la femmina ha cambiato idea, si rimette dritta e si immerge. Ora è pronta per l'accoppiamento. La femmina può accoppiarsi con uno o più maschi nello stesso giorno. I maschi di balena franca hanno testicoli giganteschi, i più grandi del regno animale. Pesano una tonnellata e producono litri di sperma. Un accoppiamento puo’ spazzare via il liquido seminale che lo ha preceduto. Quindi potrebbe non essere il primo maschio che è riuscito ad accoppiarsi a diventare il padre. Sarà l'ultimo. Le femmine che si sono accoppiate nella stagione precedente si avvicinano alle coste della Penisola di Valdes, protette dal vento e dalle tempeste, per dare alla luce i loro piccoli. Il tempo di gestazione del cucciolo di balena è stimato tra i 12 e i 13 mesi e le nascite avvengono solitamente tra i mesi di luglio e ottobre.
