As I said, wild rodents are likely to carry diseases which I don't want to expose to my snakes. And let's all get honest about that once we bring animals inside our homes the rules change. Rodent breeders like in this video shows us that the rats we buy are clean, healthy and on a great diet. That's the difference between wild rodents and captive bred ones: yes, they are the same animal geneticly, but let's face it: you wouldn't catch an wild rat and make it your pet or food for your snake.

blackcat sharp you are right it is for snake food but I’ve bought many rats from snake breeders and they make awesome pets better than buying from petco the ones from petco are always really sick :(

Wild rats are healthier because they have been exposed to disease and built immunity. Their domestic counterparts would easily succumb to the diseases that wild rats would brush off. It is a common misconception that domesticated animals are clean and wild animals are dirty. A wild rat is more likely to have a disease because it is exposed to more, not because they are innately sick. But if it was provided with a clean space, fresh food, and medical care it will be as healthy as a domestic.

handy set up. I love rats and would rather they have more space ect but it can't be that because they are looking healthy and are breeding. I keep my rate in cages but they are bred for pets so it's a different matter

I understand needing to raise them as food but why can't you keep each gender in one large area/cage and try to enrich their lives just a little, so they can at least move around and explore and see some light before being killed. I don't get why the tiny cruel tupperware is so necessary, and it actually sounds harder to clean all those hundreds of containers.

Do you think those pet rats are not diseased, angry, and frightened as well? Any animal would be. My point is that animals that have been carefully bred to be docile and loving companions should not be used as food. It is a waste and an insult to the breeders who spent so much effort creating the pet rat. Plus wild rats would get a good chunk or two out of those murderers.

Snakes have eaten wild rodents for milliennium, so there is nothing wrong with that. Rats, domestic and wild, carry the same diseases. One types is no healthier than the other. And yes, I do believe feeder rodents should be pre-killed, but only with the proper procedure, and also only injured, weak, or elderly rodents. In the wild, these are the ones most likely to be eaten. I understand that snakes must eat. I must eat also, but rest assured that my meat comes from local, trusted farmers.
@sierram979711 жыл бұрын
Wait a second, don't your first and last sentences contradict each other? If wild rodents are what snakes eat in the wild, then what is wrong with your snakes eating them
@BlubbOnly11 жыл бұрын
I would NEVER offer any of my snakes a wild rat. All these diseases would be harmful to them. Also, these rats lives in a good condition: clean, fed with good quality pellets and not cramped together. Until the day comes when my snakes eat carrots or whatever, I will feed them rodents (which, for your information, is what they eat in the wild).
@rebecav86275 жыл бұрын
I breed rats to feed my own personal snake collection. The rats are spoiled with high-quality pellet food and fresh veggies. I wouldn't want to eat trashy food, so why should my beloved snakes? I'm on your side 100% Just wanted to ask where you get those tubs from? I'm trying to find a better and more cost friendly solution. :)

Laetitia Van Zyl The proper way to breed them is to put a male in a cage with a female. Do you think you stumbled on to something groundbreaking by telling her you know how to breed them, they know how to breed themselves. I swear, the morons you see online is limitless... It ceases to amaze me that people can really be this stupid, ignorance is bliss I suppose.

Don`t forget LIVE rodents,honestly i hate offering my snakes ones from the store because they don`t take care of it and a lot of store bought ones either frozen/life were sick till they got killed or you buy a feeder with a RI or fucking pink eye or something i have had feeder rats die from sickness on the way back or days after while saving it cause the snake didn't want to eat,can`t believe i been feeding my snakes sick shit i`m raising feeders and when i can screw the stores and selling them.

Personally, I think any slaughter of any animal for any reason other than an animal hunting another animal to feed itself or its own is wrong. I think gassing them or killing them as humanely as possible is wrong. I know that these rodents are meant to be food, and like cow, pig, sheep or any 'farm' animal for that matter are all killed for us or our benefit, but I still think its wrong. I think in the long term, we shouldn't have any predatory or primarily predatory animal if it means that we have to mass kill in order to feed it. It should hunt like its instincts designed it to, not feed them and play with them.
