I understand that on the very final Southern Television closedown, the lady responsible for pulling the fader switch to turn Southern off for the last time had tears in her eyes, and could not bring herself to close Southern down. Chairman David Wilson was stood in the control room and leaned across, put his hand over the hand of the lady, and gently faded the company off air. How bitter sweet.

I grew up in Portsmouth in the 70s where Southern TV was our local TV station. Now I live in Maine. Southern Television was so local.😢

Someone published a very interesting site which was set in several alternative universes where: ATV, Southern and Westward kept their respective franchises; Their replacements kept their respective franchises following the 1992 reshuffle; Channel 4 started in 1972 instead of 1982 and became what I can only describe as “the ITV equivalent of BBC 2!”; ABC never lost their franchises! I saw it in art college - I suspect that it was taken down - but it did offer an alternative historical perspective! The ATV symbol in the late 80s and early 80s split in half and became something resembling two birds flying instead of the “shadowed eye!”. The ITV frontcaps allowed us to identify what was coming up next - I grew up in the Tyne-Tees region, so I saw that logo almost as a matter of course - it was also not uncommon for programmes made by a different region to appear on your region, whilst the source region was not showing it (it had already shown it to its own audience) - my brother and I had a little game where we would guess what ITV company made the next programme - difficult, when what was on next was an import or a movie!

0:39 best quality sound even though the volume is poor. But it's okay. Really miss romantic Southern statement.

A sort of karma would come for Southern TV eleven years later as successor TVS would lose it's rights to broadcast.
