What a wonderful show this was: entertaining and educational. Fred Dinage's presentations were more entertainment, John Miller provided the science part, with Jack Hargreaves did his "country lore" . Hargreaves was a terrific presenter and you could listen to him for hours (he also had his own show, Out of Town, that ran for years). Most peopel do not know that Hargreaves created HOW - he was originally the sole presenter - and was the deputy program controller for it. It ran for many years and was so popular it was taken up by the whole ITV network (originally, being broadcast is Southern only), and was on twice a week. It ended when Southern lost the regional franchise to TVS.

Yes, Jack Hargreaves came up with the idea when he was working for Associated Rediffusion (while still doing Out Of Town for Southern), with the title 'Know How'. He took the idea with him when he moved back to Southern in an executive role, and made a pilot as part of the 'Playback' strand which he initiated as a series for people to try out ideas - not necessarily as pilots for a series, some were clearly just one-offs. It went out at 11.15 pm, as did all the Playback shows, but it was less than a month later that the children's show format with the addition of Fred, Bunty and Jon was launched (on Southern only for the first 25 editions).

3:41 - I distinctly remember this actual item on this specific episode as a young lad back in the 70s! After the programme finished I managed to sneak into my father's study and procure his pipe and proceeded to pack, light and smoke it just as Jack had demonstrated! And it was all down to how darned cool Mister Hargreaves looked puffing away on his own pipe, right there on my Granada-rented television set! I never looked back and have probably smoked over a thousand tons of tobacco in various pipes over the decades seeing as I'm an old geezer now... and all thanks to "How" Series 10, Episode 2 and that pipe-lover, Jack Hargreaves!

So interesting and educational but in a fun way. Loved 'How' as a child. Great Kids TV of it's time. Jack Hargreaves smoking his pipe on kids TV ....so 70's lol We've lost that type of programmes these days, such a pity.

I can’t be the only one that hade a huge thing for Bunty. Only because Susan Stranks wasn’t on for another 24 hours. Ahhh 14 year old hormones. 😍😉😇. PS how to smoke😱. None of your wokery here. Just solid educational entertainment. Multicultural before it was rammed down our throats and alternative energy.😂.
