Come along with Eric O. at the SMA shop and let's have a look at this 2013 Dodge Grand Caravan 3.6 liter that was bounced around between shops and ended up at ours with a poor running / misfire complaint and a code P2308 "Ignition Coil 3 Secondary Circuit - Insufficient Ionization" and see if we can diagnose it.

One thing I've learned by watching auto repair videos is how to judge a good technician. I still haven't found ONE in my whole country. I swear if I could take my truck to SMA or to some other guys here on youtube, I would. But since I can't, I try to diagnose stuff myself. Don't know crap about it, and still I can do better than most "Pro" guys down here. So, No wonder why even other shops take their job to SMA. Eric is like a superhero. No car can beat him.

It's a real shame that the other shops would leave a car in that condition. Your integrity prevents you from doing that, and the reason you never have to send any of your customers to another shop!! Well done.

First, do no harm. But no, not these clowns. If someone left my car in that condition, I'd be mad as hell. Eric shows more respect to the cars he's pulling parts off in the junk yard.

"I want to go in there like a nijga, I dont want anyone to know where ive been in there" is exactly why Eric O. is the best. He cares about peoples property (car) and doesnt want to damage anything while he diagnoses the car. He takes it to heart and all of us should thank him for doing the right thing by taking care. I only wish I had a mechanic like him in my area

"Like a ninja..."; smiled at that comment. I agree there shouldn't be evidence the mechanic has been in there other than clean and shiny where new parts installed. But manufacturers don't always make it easy; they certainly don't seem to consider servicabilty when specifying things like plastic clips and they design their engine layouts to be assembled separately from the body and mated as a complete unit with scant regard for subsequent maintenance. On the other hand, Eric O seems to be able to fix things without leaving a trail of destruction so why can't others? I think there's a strong element of respect for the customer and pride in one's work involved here.

This was a good solid diagnosis, and honestly pretty straight forward. It still amazes me that people work in this field, call themselves good technicians, and if swapping components doesn't give them an easy answer... all of a sudden, they are out of ideas and have no idea what to do. Another good video sir, I do enjoy your videos. checking for the drag of the pin on the connector, wanting to know which coil was in that spot originally, those are the hallmarks of a true technician that genuinely understands diagnostic work and strives to do a good and thorough job on every vehicle.

I worked for a small independent shop in the 80s and had a customer bring in a Cadillac for a water pump. It was one of the last Eldorado that was normal position for the motor. He didn't like the price we quoted him, and decided to do it himself. Three days later he calls and wants us to do the job after he took the engine apart and got stalled on the power steering pulley. His idea of organizing the parts was to throw everything in a bucket, bolts brackets and all. My boss asked what I wanted to charge since it was going to be a big clusterfuck to put back together. I told him to double it. The guy agrees and it gets towed in. I ended up going to a local car lot that had a car of the same year and take a couple of Polaroids of the brackets and how the layout was. I ended up taking a day and a half to get it up and running and out the door. Customer stayed away for a while and then started coming in regularly.

Okay, Okay, Erik we get it...you're good!! lol However this is not the first car you have done a video on that has bounced around from shop to shop until finally landing in your god like mechanic hands. I'd love for you to maybe in a video someday address why finding a "good" mechanic like your self is so difficult, even taking your car to your specific dealer seems to be a crap shoot! Every time you solve one of these cases I always think how relatively simple finding the fix was for you and how on earth could this have been missed by another professional. Not everyone is equal I know, but believe me your mechanic/problem solving skills are VERY rare these days! Thanks, love the vids!

You're the MAN , Eric. You're neat in your approach to diagnosing a vehicle, and honest as the day is long. Very disappointing to see how others treat someone's vehicle. But I will give the other Tech the benefit of the doubt. Maybe he was being rushed and gave up...I don't know. In any event, the other shops should be embarrassed. But judging by the way the vehicle was left, I doubt it.

James Zivny a few weeks ago I had a heavy truck that apparently according to the main dealers needed 6 diesel injectors. Had engine warning light on dash logging low rail pressure. guess what injectors don't work as intended without fuel. there was a push fitting drawing in air. primary fuel filter was empty. I think people are far too quick to believe scan tools and suspect the worse. found it by vacuum testing the fuel pipe from the tank to filter. a lot of people never check basics anymore. I'm not complaining when you save the customer 3000 pounds it makes you look like a superhero haha

Actually Eric you can use RTV to seal that wire just not the old stuff like Dow Corning 732 which was based on Acetic Acid. The newer versions of RTV (what Permatex calls their Ultra series) are based on a different chemistry from the original. The original versions of RTV were what are called Acetoxy silicone rubber and the newer versions are called Oxime silicone rubber. The Oxime versions do not use acetic acid which is what caused corrosion. It's also why they don't smell so bad like the older technology does. The Ultra Gray that you're fond of is fine for this purpose but of course you can always use the tried and true liquid electrical tape.

I really appreciate the way you point out the fact that we need to find out why the P.C.M. failed. Did it die? or was it murdered?, and since the coils have been swapped around who knows which coil drew too many amps, and smoked the P.C.M. I also share your disappointment of hacks breaking parts, those people give the industry a bad reputation. Keep up the great work Eric,and thanks for sharing.

It's actually refreshing to see another technician using liquid electrical tape to seal a hole in a wire. I see too many puncture marks in wiring looms from people probing and not sealing them. Had to rewire an entire abs control system due to the previous shop not sealing the holes they made which caused the entire loom to become corroded past the point of repair.

This is the reason behind why I learned how to diagnose and make repairs myself. There is so much incompetence out there (covered over by dishonesty) that it is beyond belief. The only thing I take issue with Eric is... when he says "If I can do it, YOU can do it" - I understand the sentiment. However he has a big advantage due to the fact that he has ready access to multiple wiring diagrams and service information. I'm not complaining, it is his business to have that at his disposal. But I simply do not. Most of the time when I end up trying to diagnose an electrical problem I hit a wall because I do not have access to good wiring diagrams and documentation. Plus there are quite a few problems that I've seen Eric diagnose that absolutely require a scope etc. I don't have those kinds of tools either. (This is not a criticism!)

Hi Eric, I agree about how sad is to see a car get butchered. But, I think people gets what they ask for, lots of "costumers" complain for the diagnosis fee because it is free on "advance auto", come on that is just a print of the codes in the ECM memory! We do real diagnosis to find what is wrong and replace just the bad part, this takes more time than replace a part. I guess they learn the hard way! Some might say we are expensive (car gets fix with the correct part replaced at the right charge) or they go to the cheap "mechanic" (throw parts to see if gets fix and charges for each part and labor) and then only after spending a huge amount of money guessing they come to us!! I always charge extra when I see a car dismantled by a butcher.

Before I would replace the ECM I would check pin fitment on that 52 pin. Most likely not a fitment issue, but I would check it before the customer drops money on the ECM. Secondly you bring up an excellent point about swaptronics and the possibility that a burned coil caused the issue. Granted as you also said the newer electronics are pretty good at preventing that sorta thing from burning up an ECM, but we all know it's not perfect. At the least I would do a basic test on all the coils to make sure there isn't an oddball in the batch. That would suck to have it potentially burn up a ECM later down the road.
@telocho
@telocho 7 жыл бұрын
jayss10 I just wonder, if the oddball coil got swapped to another cylinder, would that pcm output driver not have been burned out as well, or cause some misfires at least? There are only misfires in cylinder 3.

Wondering if Customers insurance will pay for the new PCM. The way the PCM is mounted, it is possible that a collision from the right rear would be enough to damage something on the PCM's circuit board that could cause the coil signal issue. So, the problem may be directly related to the accident especially since it would be unusual for a PCM to break within 5 years. Yet another double thumbs up SMA video production!
@jimzivny1554
@jimzivny1554 7 жыл бұрын
Sandbag1300 I've been involved with a lot of collision jobs over the years and replacing the ecm in this case would be very difficult to get the insurance to pay for unless there was damage at that area of the vehicle. Insurance will say the part is meant to operate in an environment that shakes, rattles n rolls so why would a hit at the other end of the vehicle affect it. You're right and it could have failed at the moment of impact but proving it is damm near impossible.
@Sandbag1300
@Sandbag1300 7 жыл бұрын
Depends. If the vehicle has a frame and the pcm is mounted on the frame an impact in the rear could damage the circuit board. If the vehicle has a unibody, sufficient force likely would not make it from the right rear to the left front. At a minimum, I would want to open the pcm and take a look see.

Nice diagnosis. I can see why you want to be thorough in checking this out. It's pretty rare for PCM's to fail so everything else has to be eliminated as a possible cause. I like that invisible air filter. I wonder if the last shop the customer was at knew if he was coming to pick it up, maybe they were still going to check some more stuff on it? At least I hope that is the case. If not there was no excuse to leave it that way on their part. It seems Chrysler picked a bad location for that PCM. Hope you get a chance to replace the PCM.

I hate working on anything that has had too many fingers in the pie. It makes me nuts to see that. I call it smash and grab. You are correct about it being people not knowing proper diagnostics and honestly,on that job,without the proper diagnostic tools or know how,they should leave things alone. I cannot believe a certified shop even touched that vehicle. I sure as hell wouldnt take anything of mine there. When you first started showing us what had been already done I shook my head. Too many times I have ran into these kind of things. It really slows you down and makes it more difficult to find the true issue when someone has been in there swapping stuff around. My guess is they already suspected the ECM but were hoping by some miracle you would pull a rabbit out of your hat and find the problem somewhere else when in reality,it was right there in their face. Eather the mechanic is incompetent and unsure of his own abilities,or was hoping to save someone the bucks its going to cost to fix it. Eather way,they have no choice now. Thats what it boils down to. I have seen that too. The owner doubts the mechanic,wants another opinion because they dont like what they hear,or the other things I mentioned. Or both.

As an older person who has always done his own repairs, I have to ask the question; Is this the way it is out there? Two shops in a row who can't diagnose an automobile? Is the customer paying these other shops?

Andrew K After 30+yrs as a mechanic, service writer and manager I've learned that 70-80% of the shops(NYC area) are great at changing tires, brakes and letting the cash out of your wallet. Finding a shop like SMA is difficult, finding a real technician who understands modern electronics and has pride in his work is like finding a winning lottery ticket. It's worth it to go a little farther to get stuff done right and develop a relationship with the shop. It's a shame but the almighty dollar pushes all else to the side.

There is another unfortunate side to this coin. I was at a shop in New Jersey for an emergency flat repair, and while I waited, the receptionist phoned 6 or 7 customers in a row and told them the reason for their no crank/no start was a bad ECM and it was going to be around $1500. 6 in the shop at the same time, towed in overnight or that morning. Total money grab. They tried to charge me $300 for a single tire for a Chevy Cavalier. $10 to take it off the car. $6 to dismount it. $6 to mount new tire. $15 for valve and balance. $10 to put it back on. I drove away on the flat.

@ James ZivnyWhere are you in NYC? I have yet to find anything more than a parts changer here. Its a dam shame, but time wise and those who don't know any better, to find a reputable shop, its not worth keeping the car long enough to have these kind of issues. The only real shop I like here is Costco tire center. Great honest people, yes you wait, but honest and no BS to sell you shit because they don't care other than liability.

I recently had to take my LR3 to a Land Rover stealership to get a warranty repair done on the brake system. The fault was a known recall / known issue, so only the official LR stealerships could get the parts and labour covered. It took 3 visits for them actually provide me a car with working brakes. Think about that. A car that came in for failed brakes, left the shop twice with non functional brakes "signed off" as working. One of these times it left with the MAF left unplugged, so she wasn't running too well either. And this place is charging $180USD per hour and has about 20 lifts full all the time and a 4 week waiting list. People are sheep.

i wonder....when the collision work was done if any welding was done and they didn't disconnect the battery?, I use to think for that to happen you have better odds winning the lottery....we'll I had it happen and I still haven't won the lottery. lots of lessons learned the hard way that has shaped how I handle repairs.

Good, methodical work. It's a terrible mess that the other shops left for you. There is no excuse for broken connectors if one truly understands the current crop of autos. Looking forward to Parts II and III. BTW- What is the p/n of that Astra magnetic LED light? It seems very handy.

the autel has the ecm replacement , no pin code needed. Right before it reads the current vin (in new pcm) turn the key off , it will say no vin found , and ask you to input a vin , input it ,turn key back on voila no dealer needed. make sure you UNPLUG the skim module before all of said above.

I like Advil too, usually I can feel a headache coming on and I'll take just one (200mg) and I'll be fine all day. They gave me a bottle of 600mg Ibuprofen when I had a root canal a few weeks ago, never needed it. Took a nap to let the Novocaine wear off, no pain at all.

For a 2013 MY vehicle, the PCM is covered under emissions warranty by law. Unless the vehicle is a documented write off and then warranty is void. The dealer likely would have replaced the PCM under warranty if defective.

Inputs? I have a 99 maxima with no signal (4volt to coil transistor) to #3 and #2 coil at the coil connector or the ecm. So I checked for shorts on the circuits and found non. I plugged in a new ecu and I have the same exact problem. Luckily we can warranty the ecu because it was changed a few months back for unrelated reasons. I unfortunately have not had time to get back to that vehicle to check me cam and crank signals. But this video made me think of that car that I'm going to have to get back to soon. Ever see this before.

I really enjoy your videos Eric. Your approach to a problem is classic old school (no offense). For the most part I can follow you, but when you get the scan tool out and start talking geek you lose me. 4:00 to 4:34. I want to understand because it would help me put those backward puzzle pieces the right way around in my head. I'd have taken some advil, gone home and tackled it in the morning. We all are beneficiaries of your strong work ethic. Thank you. Vancouver, Canada.
