A good way to get the dowel pins out is to grab a bolt that fits snug in the pin, that way it doesn't crush the pin when you grab it with pliers.
@russellstephan6844

I'm a bit late to the party. Someone has probably already mentioned this too. Use a clearance-fit drill bit on the inside of the dowel pin to keep it from crushing. Then, give it the beans with your favorite Channel Locks or whatever. You'll still have to clean up the pin. But, it won't be crushed.

I quit doing business with Home Depot for twenty years because of their policy of taking back absolutely anything and then putting it back on the shelf and selling it to me. I'm a service electrician. I would get way out in the country 20 miles or so out of town and then discover the package I had purchased had been carefully resealed and put back on the shelf with missing or used parts. Twenty years isn't an overstatement.

Here’s some ideas on how to remove the hollow dowel pins. 1) go to your local convenience store that sells dry ice. Buy the smallest amount they sell (you won’t need much.) Place a towel or shop rag on a hard, flat surface, then put the dry ice on it. Gently smash it with a hammer so you get B.B.-sized pieces and collect them with a dustpan and brush, then transfer to a folded piece of paper, or just use a clean funnel, and dump the dry ice bits into the dowel pin. Let them get nice and cold, then heat the engine block near the pins with a torch. This heats the outside, and cools the inside. You should be able to pull the pin out easily with needle-nosed pliers. 2) find an expanding mandrel that’ll fit, so now your hollow dowel pin is no longer hollow. Now grab on with lock-grip pliers, and turn both the pin and the mandrel, gently back-and-forth - clockwise and counterclockwise - until it comes loose. 3) if you get this far, you probably need some TNT and lots of cuss words! 😏

I just did one of these stripped head bolt jobs on a 95 BMW E36. Did a lot of research one Time Sert vs Helicoil and one machine shop video on KZbin showed a pull test and found that the Heliciol was stronger then the Time Sert, check it out. As for the head dowel pulling, I use slip a drill bit that fits nice and tight, heat it up with a heat gun and pop it out. Sometimes you will have to use a numbered drill bit. If you are concerned about the dowel not going deep enough on those two bolt hole you can always Helicoil those two holes. Love your videos and laughed when I heard you said "Wicked" haven't heard that for a while. Keep up the great job. Thank you.

Someone said a magnet can pull metal out of your eyes,but not aluminum.Read of at least one car guy doing the emergency room metal chip eye ordeal so far. Yeah man, friend of mines daughter bought(for cheap @ an auction) an Olds Intrigue with the AWESOME 3.5L V6. Kept getting hot, told 'em I'd fix it. Figured at 103k, it was just head gaskets ate out from the Dex-Cool never being changed. Went to pull the rear head and 3 in the rear drvs side had nothing on 'em. Yup the threads pulled outta the block. Got the Time-Sert kit and it come with all 16 inserts, I did all 8 on both banks(In the car, in my driveway) cause I wasn't tearing that thing down again,HA HA HA glad to see you did 'em all.

Trick, to remove hollow dowel pin, use bread push in hole use a snug fitting bolt, smack bread into center of pin, it will force dowel pin out. People do the same trick to remove pilot bearings.

I replaced head gaskets on a 3100 GM V6. Somebody had been there before but only put one dowel pin in the front of each head. The rear of the heads slid down the block as only the intake manifold was really holding the heads to the top side of the block. When the head gasket fire ring slipped past the bore it was a short while before she started "making water". ALWAYS use ALL of the dowel-pins or sell it as soon as you are done so somebody else can fix it right.

I feel your pain Mr. O. I purchased felpro head gasket kit and they shorted me some gaskets. The package had the felpro tape covering which means it was not previously opened. I had to go buy the gaskets that were not included in the kit even though the parts included clearly listed the gaskets I needed. Thanks felpro. PS. $215 for a gasket kit, you would think they include everything listed.

Here's an idea to avoid removing timing cover for a head gasket job. There is only one bolt you MUST remove under the timing cover which bolts the top of the exhaust-side chain guide to the head. Remove valve cover. Set crankshaft to TDC and confirm camshafts are at their colored-link timing points. Remove the camshafts. After you have the camshafts out, you can support chain with a wire so it doesn't skip a cog on the crankshaft and then I was thinking you could get a 10mm deep-offset box end wrench onto the bolt hiding behind the chain guide or possibly make a special tool by welding a 10mm wrench to a short 12-pt 10mm socket to get behind the chain guide. What do you think about that? Is there enough clearance inside the timing cover? Also need clearance inside the cover for the bolt itself to be completely unthreaded. If not enough clearance, unscrew the bolt as much as possible and then cut off the head with a hacksaw - keeping rags in the timing cavity to catch debris. Remove rest of bolt with fingers or bendable grabber tool (??). Cut replacement bolt short enough for reassembly since bolt is shorter than original. When removing head you might need to “bend” the chain guide out of the way a little - hopefully the part can tolerate a little flex - if you break it you’re back to removing the timing cover. At reassembly, run a borescope down the timing cavity to check the alignment (pink) on the crankshaft cog and check the alignment at the intake/exhaust gears are aligned with the yellow links.

Great work Eric. Just started following you and you get into some of the same crap that most of us find ourselves into. I've done a few of those Toyota 2.4s. I looked into the timesert kit but I was able to put together an almost identical kit thru fastenal for less than $60. The worst of it was determining exactly what I needed but I have more than enough in my "kit" to do at least 3 jobs when I put it together.

I understand your frustration at the end Eric as it's happened to all of us. A while back, I was browsing at Lowe's looking over their tools. The salesman came up to me and we started chatting. Eventually, he was telling me the stuff that people would buy and bring back. He was telling me about how people would buy drill bits, use them and then return them for a refund. Unbelievable! Another case was where I ordered a car part from partsgeek.com. When I held the box in my hands, I thought to myself, damn this box is really light. Well, it had absolutely nothing in it; just an empty box. It took two weeks to get a refund and they still wouldn't credit me $7.00 to ship me an empty box. That was the end of partsgeek for ordering parts. Hang in there Eric; it'll get better.

Hi Terry I guess you back home, always nice to get home. I see all kinds trying to cheat at my friends parts store. I caught a guy trying to return a gasket set saying it was the wrong set . The set was $180 head gasket set and what he tried to pull off was take the good head gaskets out and put in two cheap gaskets from another vehicle and say we sold him the wrong set. Well we knew these Chinese gaskets were not even the right brand and all the rest of the gaskets matched the sku. If we sell a wrong set we have to eat the loss , we would never tape it up and pass it on to another guy, plus to do this to a garage is just dumb because these guys buy on average $1500 in parts a week. Somebody screwed up big time in Eric's case.

And it's only going to get worse. As the economy moves more and more toward the Mexican model: Rich, Poor and nothing in between, the people that work on their own cars (typically those too broke to hire a pro) are going to become ever more desperate and ever more inclined to pull this BS. Here in Phoenix a shop like Eric's would buy parts directly from a wholesaler that doesn't sell to the general public. That would at least reduce or possibly eliminate this problem.

Blind hole puller for pulling the dowel pins should work although I hear you said there was a step where it was installed so maybe not. I would imagine the locking collar was made exactly what you used it for. Maybe was an afterthought to their original idea of using a marker and never added to or corrected in the instructions. Surprised the instructions didn't specify a time to let the Loctite set up before removing the installation tool from the insert.

Have you tried side-cutters? Maybe it is mentioned below I missed it? I used to use side-cutters on hollow dowel pins. I worked on a lot of Hondas, who used hollow dowel pins quite a bit. The side-cutters need to be really sharp - this wouldn’t work with a well used pair where the jaws were nicked and dull. I would lay the jaws on the surface and close the them on the dowel pin as close to the case or engine surface as possible. Then, gently rock the cutters back and forth (not side to side). Once out, I’d just touch the surface of the dowel pin with a file in case there were any raised ridges. I'd protect the case or engine surface with a shop rag. I had great luck using that method - over 90% success rate - the other 10% I just had to destroy them with pliers getting them out and get new dowel pins :-)

As an assistant manager at another big box autopart store, I can attest to the ammount of used items that end up getting put back on the shelf. They get returned as new by incompetent employees and then sent back to the distribution center, which is then shipped to other stores again. I have gotten used ignition coils, water pumps, alternators and bearing shipped to me as new items to sell. When caught the get mark them off the stock and tag them out.

I got a noob question; since you have to remove the timing chain cover, the oil pan, and the engine mount on the passenger side to get the head off, where do you support the engine? I don't have a lift, and will be performing this repair with a floor jack and jack stands.
@SouthMainAuto
@SouthMainAuto 9 жыл бұрын
Christopher Herb Good question. The engine will support itself (somewhat) actually. You need to support it initially with a floor jack under the pan to remove the mount then you can let it "hang". After the pan is off I used a small 2x4x4" block on the corner of the block to raise and lower as needed. Make sense?

The purpose of the sulfur is to provide lubrication at elevated temperatures. Cutting steel produces heat, which melts the sulfur, which lubricates. Using the (thick) sulfur cutting oil in aluminum tends to just cause the chips to stick, and interferes with the chip formation and extraction. When tapping aluminum, I have used a mix of the sulfur oil and kerosene (50/50), with good results. "Snake oil" seems to be just as good.

So what is an extra $28 for Tap Magic compared to the cost of the Time Cert Kit ? Tap Magic works great for drilling too. I have been using for years. Looks like a trip to the Drill Doctor may have made the drilling a little easier & quicker ? The money I spent for my Drill Doctor was well worth it, IMO. My friend bought a knock-off to save a few $$ and it doesn't work nearly as well as the real McCoy, BTW.

I did some looking around on google maps. The reason Mr. O can’t find Tap Magic in not crazy sizes; he lives 33 miles from the nearest city that has an airport. Applied Industrial of Elmira sells it at their location near the airport, to service the planes. From this search, I have discovered Avoca is basically B.F.E

I dealt with many issues with my new '78 FE coupe over the years. They used soft steel bolts that were cadmium plated and screwed into virgin aluminum threads. Dissimilar metals form electrolytic corrosion, welding the bolt to the aluminum in most cases. They used this method for virtually everything. Even replacing the thermostat was a problem. Just using a 3/8 ratchet, the bolt would crack in a normal manner and the ratchet would turn with resistance, until suddenly, "Snap" and the bolt would break like a piece of taffy. Over the years, the biggest mystery is how the Subaru dealership worked on these cars without a major disaster every day. My '85 Honda was much better, at least the bolts were hardened and they used studs and nuts for high tension areas. I agree with some of the comments in that this situation is a design flaw from Toyota. They should have used screwed in studs and nuts to attach the head, or used metal inserts with conventional bolts.

I know how it feels to get a used part. I went to Autozone to get transmission fluid so I could do a flush on my Excursion. I couldn't get gallon jugs and had to buy up all the quart sized bottles. I believe I needed something like 16 quarts. While I was doing the flush, I noticed that some of the bottles had oddly dark fluid and they were missing the seal. One bottle looked like a glitter bomb and I quickly realized that someone had put their old fluid into the bottles and returned it to Autozone. Really pissed me off.

I had the same bad experience when I ordered the OEM Timing Belt kit from the internet, for my 2000 4Runner 3.4L. Everything was correct until I went to install the Belt Tensioner- it wasn't applicable to my car!! It was Saturday, and the Dealership didn't have one, so I went down the street to Advance to buy theirs. I was PISSED!

Had that happen with a DEF injector. Ordered the part and got it, but it was taped shut. Opened it up and found a used injector with a crappy gasket stuck to it. Bastard put a new part on and returned the used one in the box. Thankfully, I found this out at the shop instead of out in the middle of nowhere, where the machine was.

Eric great video. Back when I was a toolmaker I used three types of taps starting taps have a long lead before the depth of thread finishing taps have a slight taper at the beginning of the thread and bottoming taps which have a tiny chamfer. In your video you describe the sensation of not binding the chips as you work the tap deeper in the aluminum engine block. Cast aluminum doesn’t have the same tensile strength as steel or cast iron. I’m curious about the taps used on the timesert kit if it was a finishing tap not a bottoming tap which would explain why you felt the insert tool tightening up as you approached the counter-sink near the bottom. Was the drill also chamfered at the point? It’s kinda hard to tell based on the camera angles but the chip loading while you were drilling the block did explain the problem and shows the type of material you have. All the chips were small and fragmented they weren’t long and stringy the way steel sometimes is.

8 years later... the parts industry has only gotten worse. Most of my customers won't go for dealer parts so I live in the aftermarket world. And no matter the reputation of the parts supplier, I am having to deal with inferior parts, missing parts, or just plain defective parts. And now a certain country producing knockoffs has infiltrated some of these supply stores. Watch the video of the Motorcraft knockoff spark plugs. You just don't know what you're being sold these days. When I retired I moved to repairing mostly lawn and garden equipment and the parts problems are there also. You cant get away from it. Thanks for the video.

Walmart had issues with people buying items like Flat screen TV's then going back to the store with the receipt, and grabbing a new TV from stock and then going to customer service and trying to return the TV for a refund. They eventually figured it out and placed a station at the entrance where returned items need to be registered and receive a special sticker. Also, they started recording serial number of larger, expensive items on the receipt. In most cases, returned items are probably OK to use, but something like a head gasket is too critical of a repair to take a chance on using returned or previously used items. Too much labor and work are at stake here.

I had one of those indoor BB gun ranges in the cellar for the grandsons. One time we were shooting and a BB went through the target, bounced off a shovel, hit the dog in the ass. The dog did a little dance around the cellar. It took an hour to stop laughing.
