Great video...as always. I've had a spring break lose on me while using the DIY type clamps...and it's quite something i can tell you, one moment you're looking at the strut assembly as you tighten the clamps...and the next...it's all gone, there's nothing left...it disappears faster than you can see it all go. If 1 if these broke free and hit you in the face or head...i can't imagine you'd survive. I got lucky...it all missed me and just sprained my wrist as it tore the ratchet out of my hand. So Eric you're dead right to recommend taking these to a shop....also it's clear you know what you're talking about...people respect that, so keep raising awareness about safety...be blunt, don't labour things and be boring about it...just tell people when it's going to hurt/ kill or be expensive if they get it wrong. On a personal note if i can...and with the greatest respect to you. Your Videos and channel are brilliant and will be very popular given a bit of time...all of which i like!....however i was watching the Electric Trailer brake Part 2 the other day and you were working late into the evening doing the video, and videoing i guess added a fair chunk of time to the job...don't do the videos for us...if it means your family sees less of you.

Ian Muggeridge Great story Ian and thanks for sharing. Glad you are OK! When safety is a huge concern I really try to make a note of it for the viewers for sure especially with these. Kinetic energy kills when it comes to a coil cutting loose. Of course I am not "Mr. Safety" in a lot in my videos when I do dumb things haha. On a second note I appreciate your caring concern about my shop time. That was a job that I had already planned on doing after hours and didn't sacrifice family time to do so but thanks again for expressing genuine concern and caring :)

Got hit with a coil spring, helping a friend out at home using the cheap DIY style. Lucky I had the setup facing away from me and it hit the back of the work bench, bounced back and hit me square in the face. They can do permanent damage or worse death. Best as you say, take it to a shop, or if available buy the complete assembly as they are reasonable, especially if the shops labor charge is high. And coil springs can sag just as strut seals leak. Nice job.

Eric spends so much time putting together a informative video, then Trinity comes in and completely steals the show. Charles Miller That was the best story I have read in a long long time, bottom line is i need to come to Fl. We need to hang out have a beer and swap stories. You need to purge them so I can laugh. It is stories and memories like that , that I enjoy. I knocked on deaths door so many times growing up there is no other option than divine intervention that I am here today lol. Plus I want to shoot a Gator in the worst way and I don't know why. I'd like a freezer full of gator meat... well just because, who in NY has gator meat in stock?! What do ya say? Heck me and you gator hunting could produce a pretty fine story ya know... and one heck of an SMA video...
@charlesmiller50789 жыл бұрын
I live between 2 large State Wild Life Areas, Whatever you call them. On a 73 Acre Lake/Swamp/Lake situation. Now In the State Of Fla.....Unlike the gator hunters on TV, God Bless there Souls, We cant , I believe the Law States " Fire Across Any Body Of Water ", Now that reminds me of another Story....But they use, and you being a Gun Guy and all know what I'm typing about, Its called a " Bang Stick ", I myself have never used one, or seen one for that matter. But that's how they Legally kill Gators, Believe they cant hang bait either , not sure on that one. Best way is to let it float on a 2 x 6 anyway. NY is Void of Gators, I have never lived in a place without gators, As a Kid, we would grill in our back yard on a small lake, my Dad would go inside for a minute or 2 and a darn Gator would Jump out of the Lake turn over the grill and snatch up the meat and beat feet back into the lake, and we would end up with PBJ sandwiches, which was fine with me. My neighbor would set on the side of the lake and the 2 gators we had in the lake, both about 6 foot " Sam and George " would come between his legs and he would feed them bread, My Mom always thought he was Crazy. To the Kids he was our hero. We used to swim in the Lake , with gators all around us and bumped into one trying to swim to the bottom of the lake one day, I don't know which one of us were the most shocked me or the Gator. They don't really like people, they just hang around when they hear water splashing, as in 11 year olds playing how much mud can I throw at my friend. We had a 10 Ft Jon Boat, we would take a Brim and a Zepco pole and reel , used heavy line ( no hook ), tie the brim by the mouth, cast it right in front of either, Sam or George, they would grab it and swallow it, and for the next few hours they would pull us around the Lake, when ever they would stop swimming, we just pulled on the line and off they went. But in the end they would head for the cattails and we could never get them to come out once they went into there. That was the Spooky Place when we were Kids, Makes me Shutter even today. Guess I should be typing about struts, and all their Ups and Downs, But I don't care about Struts, so heck with them. I like Gators, Bet you could train one to be on a leash, maybe I will catch a 2 footer and just see ! Off to the Dock. Don't you have some tires to Rotate, or is Vanessa handling that department :)

Super cute daughter? She knows how to ham it up! Prior to finding YT Videos on strut removal I did it both ways 1st took whole unit to an alignment shop and they did the spring compression for me 2nd time rented the tool from auto parts shop and did the forcing screw thing which was nerve racking but had a he'll of a time tightening the large nut with the Allen key hole in strut rod., had no impact etc., thought about buying a pass thru socket set but didn't so used the $ saved to take to shop where they just impacted the nut on, don't think the strut shaft got turned and damaged but it did cross my mind as was sure Allen socket must be there for a reason! It was for Subaru rear struts. Thanks for the excellent videos your electronics diagnosis videos are very instructional! I can diagnose simple electronic problems and can read auto diagrams but have not made the leap into serious scan/ OBD2 code diagnosis. All your Subaru content much appreciated. Your rear wheel bearing video......yikes, will not do anytime soon that long rusted bolt looks real hairy !

I worked on the Final Assembly line for Oldsmobiles for a year. We assembled one car every 40 seconds, which is 180,000cars on my shift that year. Across the aisle from me, 3 meters (30 ft) away, they compressed the front springs. Two or three times each day one of those compressed springs got loose. It was horrible. They really fly, fast & far, AND they weight a lot. Eric is correct! Do NOT allow the spring to get loose.

Good Morning...awesome vid! Not sure if this tip will help you or other viewers... When I replace struts with a camber adjustment I mark the head of the camber bolt.... I also take a magnetic bubble reader (gauge)and attach it to the rotor to get the degree reading before I disassemble... I have never had a problem with premature tire wear and it saves a lot of time... However, if I take it for a test drive before hand and notice that the alignment is off, of course I'm going to stick it on the alignment rack and knock it out... But if everything is perfect I take my measurements, apply the same measurements at the end of the job and keep it moving!

I have used my bolts,nuts and hooks cheap spring compressor a few times. I found that with careful set up, and even compression side to side. that nothing threatened to slip or fly apart. I did use the "u" bolts that hold the bolts to the spring thereby reducing the risk of the bolts slipping off. You don't have to compress the strut springs all that much to disassemble the unit.

Eric, just did this job tonight on my outback before i found this. I did not know about the alignment of the circle and the bottom of the mount. Car drives fine afterwards. Thanks.

That's all I ever had and I damned near killed myself every time I used them , but there was nothing else. .....back in the day , no local services etc , so do it yourself or not at all. Still frightening to think about it. I was interested in your take on the rod bolt and hex fitting , I must admit that I used to just clamp it with vice grips as high as possible on the rod preferably where it would never compress far enough into the shock assembly and I never once had any come backs.

Reminds me of one of my earliest experiences in a shop environment at a technical school. We were doing the steering and suspension unit at the time and we were told to pull the front struts off a Chevy Cavalier. While the other two members of my group took the nuts off the top, I held the strut. I was surprised by the sudden movement of the strut when they took that center nut out by mistake, but none of us realized just happened until after my instructor mounted the strut in the compressor and realized it was already apart. I thought that I was a poor catcher or something.

Hi Eric O nice show love it. Can you tell me about the swivel joint, hose to tool, you use on all your air tools. I have not seen one like it in the UK. Makes moving about less stressful by the looks of it. Ian G

Well - Not going to find any shops around here that are willing to help anyone out...Unfortunately...Easier on a Subaru than a VW Jetta from what I have seen in other videos. Again, I wish was closer to your shop, then you would have ALL of my work- 7 hr trip from the Cape Ma. :).....Love your commitment to customer service...Tried to take my car to a AAA Approved Auto Repair Shop but they are just as bad when it comes to service. Seems like they over charge to make up the difference. Anyway Thanks

First, she's adorable! Are you not a fan of the whole assembly for the DYI'er? Surprised the bolts were so clean being in the snow belt.

Mike Shelly I do like Q-Struts when they make hem but in this case not an option. They are great for the DIY for sure.

Did you use the M-word struts on this car? Are they good enough?

I use Monroe's all the time and them seem ok to me?
@RonGoote9 жыл бұрын
There are several brands making the quick struts. They come with a new spring installed already. They cost more but you don't have to deal with the spring compressor. This should also be a DYI option.
@SouthMainAuto9 жыл бұрын
Ron Goote Oh yeah for sure, that is a great option
@PhattyMo9 жыл бұрын
Ron Goote The only way to go,for the DIY'er,IMO. Much safer. Those springs scare me,There's a lot of stored energy in one of those springs when they're compressed. I like keeping my hands attached to my body.

Nice video. Thank you for posting. Quick question, is this the same procedure for a 2015 Forester? I was thinking about DIY but can't find any videos on the newer Foresters (2014+).

Great video as usual, but I must say, are you feeling okay ?????. you didn't use brake cleaner in this video lol lol lol . Only joking. Keep up the good work. Good advice about people that as never removed there springs before they can be lethal.

I laughed so hard at Trinity. She'd make a face, you'd look at her and she'd stop, then do it again. She's so cute! Also on the 19mm nut in the strut top plate, a 3/4 inch spark plug socket would suffice if it has a hex on the rear for a wrench. that'll only work for certain makes, as far as I've seen readily available there are only 5/8 (16mm), 3/4 (19mm) and 13/16 (21mm). I know the tool trucks sell 14mm and so on but your local tool store likely won't

That was a great video and you gave some Great tips on safety. I have installed Monroe Quick struts on my friends Jeep Grand Cherokee WK. We are on our second set of Quick struts with in 2 years and both times the strut springs have failed. It's having problems holding the weight of the vehicle. At this time I'm looking into replacing the springs and keep the struts because they're still good. The quick strut assembly in this Jeep is only a year old. My question is who makes a good spring should I go with OEM but they're very expensive or should I try an aftermarket like moog. Do you know a good manufacturer that makes good Springs. I am now very weary of buying any Monroe products after this experience.

A few things I will add as working method.1.- wash the vehicle underneath before, so you'll work in a clean environment. 2.- Use gloves. 3. describe the replacement part (Monroe?) 4.- Did not mentioned torque values. 5.- alignment bolt, did you said were it goes? (yes, upper hole). Thank you
