I'm not too sure if you'll see this but I wanted to post this. I just wanted to take a quick second to thank you for posting all of these videos. I'm currently a 2nd year apprentice up here in good old Canada and I'm glad I found your KZbin channel. The amount of knowledge and insight I've gained from watching your videos has been amazing. My grandfather worked as a mechanic for over 40 years and while I've learned a lot from him, the industry and cars he worked on during his career were vastly different compared to today's modern vehicles and technology. I love how detailed all of these videos are from diagnosis all the way to repairing the fault. So thank you again for posting these videos. You've gained a long term fan! I would die to work under some body like you! Thanks, Alex

zlALEXlo Hey Alex glad it is a help to you and that you enjoy them. Kinda funny the apprentice that works with me now is a Canadian and it was his dream to work with me lol. Well keep your head on straight pay attention to your work and do your best! Just member a little common sense goes a long way in this business. Good luck in your adventure. -Eric O.

I don't do many AC systems, but when I do I always stress over how much PAG oil to put in, especially if there was a leak and you really don't know how much came out before you started. I tend to follow the guide for each component in my factory service manual. For that compressor I was thinking the only way to really know how much is in it at any time would be to totally empty it like you did the old compressor. Once it was empty you could replace the amount that came out of the old compressor plus a little more to replace the drips and spills you didn't get to measure. I was relieved to see that even a pro mechanic like yourself stresses over this, so now I don't feel as bad when I stress over it. Chris
@michaelherbert8213
@michaelherbert8213 9 жыл бұрын
I agree. If there was a leak in the system I add a hair less than the factory spec after draining the new compressor. If there weren't any leaks then I put in what came out of the old compressor.

Awesome video. I just worked on a 04 toyota rav4. Bad battery damaged the fuel system. Relay box was damaged, old fuel pump fried. The complain was the car stalled out after getting fuel.owner tried jumping the car but nothing .My initial diagnosis was originally the fuelpump. Put a new one in and nothing. Started digging with the electronics, Had power going to the pump harness but it was only at 11.70v, to low. After my bro helped me out with the electrics we managed to get somewhat of a result. The new pump started to cycle after you turned the key off. Epic LOL. All the relay were showing 170 ohms of resistance. Pulled the entire relay box off to look underneath and it was clean. Put the box back on and the car was a bit less hesitant to start but still nothing. Our conclusion, the bad battery damaged damaged either the fuse box or ecu causing a voltage drop. The car needs to go to the dealership were my bro works to determine how bad the damage really is. I was doing this job outside. Conclusion......... DO NOT IGNORE YOUR BATTERY!!

I find your approach to adding oil interesting. I have never drained and measured what was in the old compressor. I also don't recall ever getting a new compressor without oil being in it. I generally add one ounce of oil to the system when I change a component and two ounces when there is explosive decompression such as a collision or burst hose. I have never had an issue doing it that way.
@SouthMainAuto
@SouthMainAuto 9 жыл бұрын
eldoradony Oh no kidding, see in this case it would have had twice the required amount in the system if I just put it on the way it was.

Whenever I do an AC system repair and if the compressor had suffered the black death I would flush out the system and put back in the total amount of oil for the system, since flushing the entire system will normally remove all the oil in the system.

In my DIY experience, I have had little success w/ measuring drainage (practically zero drainage) from compressor. When a leak is present allowing, much of the lubricant is likely pulled out w/ the leak. In that case, I add system total spec amount before closing. I have had no adverse effects from slighlty too much lubricant. Great video!

Hi Eric Good video.and really I do think Sheba does have the best Job and gets scratched as well (LOL). One question regarding the oil, I understood the compressor stated 70cc as capacity shipped with 80cc. why would you not just remove 10cc as the shipping overage and leave it full? A 2nd question I know the oil is carried throughout the system during operation but my understanding is that most of the oil stays in the compressor resivoir and will settle out when system not running. If there was only 10cc left in the system would that not indicate that system failure could have been caused by too little oil remaining? I am a new subscriber so am enjoying catching up on your videos keep up the good work. Tintown.

Great video Where did you get your info on the oil quantity is it a free site or do you pay a subscription? I'm trying to find some useful web sites that are free. Do you recharge the system with the old freon or you just use new? I'm thinking of getting a AC machine but the cost of it is crazy when I already have all the tools to e vac the system. I also put back the same amount of oil that i take out and sometimes a little more and never had any problems

Hey Eric, just want some clarification on this: Were you able to diagnose that the Mitsu needed a receiver dryer or just best-bang for the buck it's a wise idea to go ahead and do it since the a/c system is already opened up? I ask because I'm (still) about to do the a/c on my Civic and a receiver drier is a fairly cheap.

I have always removed the PAG that in new or rebuilt compressors. As I have no clue if or how long it was exposed to outside air. My factory guru AC guy says, what come out. Should be put back in. And to never over fill any AC with PAG oil. It will flood the compressor and can lock it up or blow seals.

I think they meant there's 80cc of oil in the compressor. Subtract what you drain out of the old compressor 70cc. So 80-70 =10cc. Drain 10cc out of new compressor so now got same amount as the old one.

I will bet that very few techs will double check for leaks with a sniffer after it held vacuum for >15 minutes.

You should put together a video of out takes, Like you don't have enough to do already....... So the boat and trailer are on the way to Key West, actually Marathon Key. Finally took the boat out on a big lake to test before trip, That 350 is rock solid engine. Don't know if we made a mistake installing electric brakes on the trailer, a friend said salt water will wipe them out fast, said hydraulic would be the way to go if your going to be backing them into salt water. Yea where was he when we were in the middle of it. We will be spraying them inside and out with fresh water as they come out of the salt. They should be just north of Miami at 10:45am Sat, headed that way. We did it !!!!!!!!!

Charles Miller Way to go man! Glad it is up and running and working good. All the boat trailers that I fix have hydraulic brakes on them. We call the surge brakes. Hey what makes you think I have any out takes!?!
@charlesmiller5078

Oh......I know you have out takes your hiding from us in some USB thumb drive stashed away, probably double wrapped in plastic zip bags stashed in a knot hole in some tree on your property. My neighbor a real boater guy, said the electric brakes will work, but they need to be unplugged before putting into salt water, or I'm guessing any water. Then rinsed down good with clean water when first taken out of the salt water. Most likely we will be looking into surge brakes. I find it amazing it takes hours and hours to take a 6500 pound 27 ft boat off its trailer on land, and 3 minutes to launch it in water and 10 minutes to put it back on the trailer. This morning the boat was approx 35 miles off the Cuban Coast fishing for Tuna and Sail fish. I wish we could post pictures, Oh well. People who think they know everything.........Don't watch You Tube "They don't "Need" it" People who know Life is about learning and improving your skills. Watch You Tube.

Excellent quote sir Hey if you get some pics I'd love to see it. You can put them up on google + ya know and share them. That Tuna brings big $$$ right?

I know from watching the Tuna Show that the ones they catch do.....But not really sure if the ones there after are the same ones ?. They did do some Snorkel diving yesterday, said it was amazing, tropical fish everywhere, Like swimming in a huge aquarium. This is his first time in the Keys so he's a little blown away. But the boat is running perfect no troubles. Nice thing is he's able to dock it right at the house there renting, no in and out of the water, tho not real hard to do, its still 27 ft. long.......... I believe I have a Google Plus account, not sure, if I do I haven't ever used it, Got to check that out....
