This week we had a caddy in for a lean condition. I was scrolling through the data on the scanner and found that the mass air flow was only registering 3 grams per second. I distinctly remember in one of your videos that GMs.should be closer to 5.5. my coworker said it was fine. It bugged me. Sure enough, I looked it up in Mitchell and found that it should be 4-8 at idle. Tried cleaning it, the money light came back on,. co-worker was giggling. I checked the data again and still couldn't get but low 3's out of the mass air. Changed it, and like magic, the airflow grams went up, fuel trims corrected themselves and once drive cycle completed, I inspected it and shipped it. Thanks for the videos. I grew up spinning wrenches. After 11 years in the military, and 12 years in a mill, I got back into it and am constantly trying to educate myself. Thanks for your very informative videos. You help tremendously by not showing just the answer, but the diagnostic road to get there

I have a '99 Silverado, and did the mass airflow, took it out for a quick rip and it was still runnin shitty. Money light wasnt on, but with OBD data the sensor was reporting exactly 3 (iirc) g/s, regardless if im sittin there or full send. Really threw me for a loop. So, I take it all apart, pull the airflow sensor out, clean it, have a goodly gander at it, put it all back together and walk away...and then realize for the second time, now, I've forgotten to plug the damn thing in

I immediately had to check to verify it wasn’t an episode from “The Red Green Show “! I suppose it’s the voice and manner of speaking. Good video learned and enjoyed at the same time! I especially liked watching you tap on the purge valve while the connector was responding to each tap! We all can to feel normal now! Unique for a technical video. I think it is awesome that you do not mind diagnosing the problem and letting the customer fix it themselves. I've seen shops act like you are taking food off their children's plate when you decide you want to do your own work. There have been times when I was too poor to pay attention. Not having a car to get to work would make things worse. Without a lot of diagnostic tools or the ability to fund a parts cannon, sometimes having a shop get you in the right direction was neccesarily the difference between paying rent and an endless cycle of cash advances and a hole that is very hard to stop digging.

Very important not to allow too much vacuum into the tank. I replaced a rusted out tank in a 1993 Chevy 6.5 Diesel, along with the fuel cap. I drove about 350 miles and stopped to refuel. When I tried to remove the cap (which is supposed to vent under vacuum), I ended up having to pry it off. The brand new tank that used to hold 32 gallons now only hold about 20.

This video helped me figure out a similar problem on Similar Vehicle, but with different symptoms. About a month ago I tried to put gas in my 2005 Avalanche with the 5.3 flex fuel and the pump at the gas station kept kicking off like my filler neck was clogged, like maybe somebody tried to sugar my tank, and I got the check fuel cap display on the dash and a few evap codes. I pulled the filler neck it was clean. I pulled my line off at my purge valve at the Intake and a bunch of little black pellets fell out. I knew right away that was charcoal. So I pulled my canister down and took my cutoff wheel and cut a big hole in it. dumped out all of the charcoal, springs, pads and all of the other little bits in there out and wrapped it up with that aluminum really sticky tape for doing a/c ducts. blew out all of the lines, purge valve, and vent valve, and now I can put gas In my truck at the fastest pumps around without it kicking off, and the truck starts easier now, no check engine light, and no check fuel cap display. It didn't cost me a dime.

We have these issues on CRVs when customers try to squeeze more fuel into their tank after the pump clicks off, the fuel gets in and eats the sponge filter that keeps the charcoal in and little tiny bits of charcoal get sucked into the purge and blocks it open. We have to replace the canister, the purge valve and blow out the line in-between. Hope it was worth it to hit 50$ exactly on the pump!

I have a P0455. I’ve replaced gas cap, purge valve, then Evap canister and vent valve. Evap canister was full of gas. (Also still getting code after clearing) Question could the canister being full of gas have been caused my topping off? Or is it def a problem with my fuel pump? AND, should I have blown out the lines after replacing canister/valve? Could gas be/have been in the lines? Without doing a smoke test, only other thing I can guess is fuel pressure sensor. If I’m dropping the tank, I’m replacing all of it. Still running orig. 2005 Tahoe 270k miles. She’s a Beast!
@Stephen-cr3sc5 жыл бұрын
If you have 10 minutes to spare, I’d appreciate some advice. I have a 2004 Honda Accord LX with an i-VTEC 2.4 DOHC SULEV engine. I’m aware it has a timing chain instead of a belt. This car has 118,000 miles and has only been driven in snow about a dozen times - to the best of my knowledge, never on a salted road. It has only lived in the San Francisco Bay Area and then central Oregon. I would say its condition is very good. It’s needed very little maintenance beyond oil changes (every 5000 or 6000 miles), a couple of batteries and a new starter about four years ago. Currently, the maintenance required light is on and has been for three years, but I’m retired and only drive 1000 miles a year. I only fill the tank 3 times a year. It runs a very little bit rough, as in 90% to 95% of smooth normal. The alternator is working correctly but has bad bushing/bearing noises. Under semi-hard braking, the pedal pulses as if it has a warped rotor (not the ABS, different feel), otherwise, they work fine. It rarely loses coolant, oil, brake fluid, ATF or power steering fluid. The AC doesn’t work but it’s still holding pressure. It’s never overheated, or seen temperatures under 20 F or over 105 F. My current plan is to change the air filter, spark plugs and upstream O2 sensor, replace the alternator and belt, and do the front brakes with new rotors. I bought gauges, a vacuum pump and all the stuff needed for the AC. So, finally, here’s my question: My only income is Social Security so I really need this car to last a long time. Are there any jump-up-and-bite-you-in-the-butt characteristics common to this vehicle that I need to circumvent with proactive maintenance? I watch your channel a lot and you often say this or that make or model vehicle is notorious for this or that problem. When I first got out of High School, a friend and I rebuilt about 20 engines (mostly Volkswagen and Chevys) so I’m a little above novice. That was in the late 1960's, I’m far from up to date on newer cars. I learned about individual ignition coils and how fuel injectors worked from you. My experience ended with carburetors, points, rotors and distributor caps. I was a machinist for 18 years after that. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks

@tdidan I got an O2 sensor code. So I bought a replacement. I realize the code could indicate a bad catalytic converter, but I won't go there for now.

I have a 1995 Chevy 1500 V8 and also my aunt bought gas at a gas station and I bought gas there 30 minutes before that. Her car and my truck messed up running like crap acting like it has no gas. She had to replace a part but mine we replaced the gas put gas treatment in it put plugs and plug whires rebuilt the hole distributor and now it runs great iddeline but it doesn't seem to have enough take off and when it down shifts it loses power and if you are going from 2 to 1st usually it dies. Can you help please it is a auto matic and it is a. 1500

I like this video especially because I own a 1999 silverado 2500 and now I know how to trouble shoot the fuel tank vent system. Just this summer I had my fuel pump replaced with OEM because it started making noise.

Hope you got the job to replace the valve and canister. I do most of my own work as well but when I need to take it to a shop for help finding my problem I let them finish the job. Especially no longer than what it would take you to replace those two parts up on the lift.

Nice, that your able to provide that sort of service for the shade tree guys. If I had a guy I trusted. I would be more than willing to pay for the diagnosis and then I do the R&R. The problem I have, most of the mechanics around here are R&R guys too. Not worth paying a guy to throw parts at it when I could do just that my self. Not kidding either. Around here you hit a snag. You're hosed. They have a few pre practiced lines. " You need a new head gasket." " Your Computer is bad." Are you sure, you did not even hook up a scan tool. " Yea we have seen a hundred of them" I bet you have...

Is it possible to add too much purge to a gas tank with my scan tool? I have a Chevy HHR that has the P0446 and have changed the vent solonoid and purge valve in the front. No obstructions and still get Excess Vacuum. Charcoal canister is clean and not obstructed.

Love watching the Bill Nye of mechanics. Thanks for the upload Eric. 👍

That's so rude. Eric is an actual mechanic. Nye is NOT an actual scientist. You want a real scientist, Sir Martyn Poliakoff on the "Periodic Videos" channel would be a better comparison. Not Nye.

I am exact same problem with my '05 Chevy Silverado 5.3l V8 flex fuel ...I have 3 codes..(P0446,P0449 and now P0300)🙄..I put 8 new plugs,wires and coils in..🤷♀️ Im replacing vent valve and canister today for 1st 2 codes..and I have to replace 2 O² sensors also but what is causing the misfire code now? Could it be the missing O² sensors?..I also live in NY but I am way up north on Canadian Border and St. Lawrence River...😂🥶 this is my first year as a solo DIY mechanic..as my Dad was who taught me everything but sadly I lost him in June/2022 to a motorcycle accident😔 so any help or advice would be greatly appreciated 😎
