Come along in this video as I see what is plaguing this 2002 Honda Civic Coupe' and find out what is making the check engine light come on with a code P0131. Once we see what the problem is we dig a little deeper and have some fun with the scope comparing "scan data" vs "real time data" with the scope and scan tool.

Eric, that was great for the average DIYer how you showed how to test the heater circuit for the O2 sensor for the goodies that it needs to operate, such as power & ground with the a common test light. It was also pretty cool that you did the same with the sensor ground integrity and to test the communication between the PCM and the O2 sensor with a test light using the 5 volt bias voltage the PCM was sending down the signal return. The PCM uses that bias voltage to check for a open or short to ground. In your case, using the test light ( to ground the signal wire ) you demonstrated that the PCM would of interpreted the 0 volts on the signal wire as a short to ground and when you removed the test light from the signal wire the bias voltage rose back up to 5 volts and the PCM would have interpreted the 5 volts as a open circuit on the signal return because it was unplugged. If you did not have a expensive scan tool ( like most DIYer's )you could simply use a DVM to check for that bias voltage to verify the integrity of the signal wire from the O2 back to the PCM. In ether scenario the PCM would have thrown a code and as you say, turn on that Money Making, Money Light! LOL ! It could also explain why in the past you said that the heater was not working properly and PCM did not throw a code. If the vehicle that you were working on did not have a bias voltage on the O2 sensor heater, the PCM would not know that the heater was malfunctioning, if the heat environment was at the O2s minimum operating temperature and it would continue to operate ( produce a voltage ) but it may be slow to respond or sluggish. Great Vid, Keep e'm coming!

Thanks Eric. This helped me diagnose the upstream o2 on my escort zx2. It was so lazy after the car was warm, almost same exact problem. Would dip down to .1v very very intermittently causing a buck when the engine speed was between 2300-2600rpm. Restarting the car would fix the problem for a bit but it would act up again. It was driving me nuts forever because it never threw a code....

You should try upgrading the verus hard drive to a SSD and upgrade the memory to 1 Gig. I would occasionally have problems starting my verus. I did the upgrade myself in a few hours its the best thing I did!! No more starting issues!! It went from over 2 minutes to start down to 1 minute. Its not hard to do there is instructions on the net. Great video!!

Great comparison. I'm surprised at the comparison with the old sensor. Apparantly the PCM is putting out a signal, but checkout the 02, not good! Great Video!
@spelunkerd
@spelunkerd 7 жыл бұрын
I've seen that difference before, comparing scan tool live data vs labscope. I've assumed the difference is a result of a bottleneck in the communication rate between the PCM and the OBD output data port. The PCM is sending a sample of the O2 sensor readings, but of course random infrequent samples of a moving target fluctuate. I like to think it's not an issue with intake communication of the PCM, because otherwise the PCM would have trouble interpreting the info. The OBD port is not part of the regular function for the PCM, the port is there just so lowly humans can glance over the shoulder of a computer. No reason to communicate at top speed.

Eric I was taught in my state of indiana when getting my emissions certification that scoping the real time of the o2 to see if she's working properly is to be on a frequency scale. There is a set of values at idle and 2500 rpm. I will get you them values. somewhere around 5 hertz at idle. I think Great video showing us the difference between real time process scanner time. Are you really having trouble frequently with the verus. I truly like pico for scopes and factory for our domestic cars. But as we all know you work on alot of different makes and models. Would be costly. Keep up the great camera work and diagnostics.

I think that Snap-On should buy that tool back from you for the price you paid for it including all the repairs and then go find one that works from a different company. I'd be quite upset with that them if I were going through what you're going through. It's just not right. You shouldn't have to pay for repairs on a faulty piece of tech.. I'm angry just thing about. Just curious, but as far as the scope function goes, have you ever considered just purchasing a dedicated "real" oscilloscope now that pretty good ones are available for about $300 to serve that function. They are not specifically automotive, but might offer some nice extra functionality (4 channels, variable filtering/bandwidth, math functions like duty cycle, frequency, rise/fall times, etc.). For example, Rigol has a popular line of cost effective digital scopes: www.amazon.com/Rigol-DS1054Z-Digital-Oscilloscopes-Bandwidth/dp/B012938E76/ref=sr_1_1?s=industrial&ie=UTF8&qid=1443397469&sr=1-1&keywords=rigol+oscilloscope

*@**16:58* After removing the _nearly useless_ and badly corroded static/ground strap- you stuck the test light to the valve cover in 2 places, and then the heat shield- resulting in an intermittent light operation, only lighting while directly on a valve cover nut. That strap is there for a reason, I know you know that. It should be eventually replaced. I've seen many strange electrical anomalies occur from a badly corroded or missing static/ground strap (especially here in Central New York).

That stinks about the Verus. Sorry to hear about that, have you attempted to upgrade the ram (should use laptop memory SODIMM) and swap the hard drive (Current drive is probably a 5400 RPM) to a solid state drive? +TheTexasCoder Either that or increase the Page (Swap) File size- best to have it equal to amount of RAM. Win7 Forum makes a program called "Ultimate Tweaker" for Win7, freeware. Works beautifully. 1 useful part is "forcibly unload DLLs from memory after use".

+HUBBABUBBA DOOPYDOOP That is a very good point! The swap file and the windows tweak app would do wonders for his Verus. Does the Verus run the full version of Windows or is it the Windows CE version? Also, would running outside software void snap-on's warranty?

TheTexasCoder Regardless of "version" every OS has a type of "Swap" file that information is written to and read from- to free up RAM. Be it a FDD, HDD, SSD, or even a wireless drive or Cloud-based storage. You can even disable it- watch what happens. That Tweaker is a 1-time use action. It leaves no trace of being used, no change log. It only writes to registry one time, one single multi-command .Bat file. It is not a TSR, and contains no digital signature. It is used to modify registry values- not create or delete them. It does not affect any checksum values (detectable by antimalware) but only the hexadecimal of certain A20 Handles and Memory Mangers, DLL runtimes, and GL/TSR settings. If one knew exactly what/where to modify- you wouldn't need the program at all; it merely makes it easier for the regular User, by using a simple GUI. The Creators of that Forum have been doing stuff for a long time- and so have I. Please at least educate yourself on the subject (look into it) before you blindly criticize something or someone. I'm not going to argue about something I learned 22 years ago, and neither would you. I merely made a suggestion to a complete stranger; I'm sure Eric is smart enough to do what he wants to- he doesn't require a watch dog- tied up in the back yard and barking at a squirrel. From Wikipedia: "A distinctive feature of Windows CE compared to other Microsoft operating systems is that large parts of it are offered in source code form. First, source code was offered to several vendors, so they could adjust it to their hardware. Then products like Platform Builder (an integrated environment for Windows CE OS image creation and integration, or customized operating system designs based on CE) offered several components in source code form to the general public. However, a number of core components that do not need adaptation to specific hardware environments (other than the CPU family) are still distributed in binary only form". Totally tweakable.

+TheTexasCoder, according to the snap-on flyer for the Verus it is running Windows XP (which has been deprecated and no longer supported by MS for a few years now). I’ll add a link in my next post. In case KZbin flags it as spam or something, simply Google “Snap-On Bid Specs” and it will be the first link titled “Diagnostics Brochures and Bid Specs - Snap-on”. On that page, click the Verus link and search for ‘Windows’ within the resulting .pdf.

Pet Rock's Garage *EXTREMELY* repairable, maintainable. You're not "online" with it- so no need for anything further (updates, security, etc.) from Microsoft. On the bench of a competent tech- this device could very easily be brought back to life, and it wouldn't cost Eric any more of his hard earned cash. No more sending it in to company- to be gouged.

A tool that relies on Microsoft Windows? There's your problem! We had to scrap an older Tek scope because it ran Windows 2000 and it was just too creaky and fragile to rely on.

The error with the Varus you're getting is an OutOfMemoryException. This is mostly harmless in terms of the function of the device. Its almost never an indication of a hardware problem in something embedded like this and no need to send it back to snapon. Generally its a software issue due to attempting to do too much at the same time on the device. Either you're overloading it or the software that runs on it was done poorly. Anything on the scope that involves history like taking traces or having lots of browser tabs open will eat into your maximum working memory. Closing down programs or restarting the device should help free things up.

The Autel has a capacitive touch screen. You'll want to find a special capacitive stylus for it. A regular style for a resistive touch screen will not work as well (if at all sometimes). That might be why you're having trouble with it. ;) You can make your own if you have a nice full metal jacket pen. There's a great DIY instructable tutorial on it. www.instructables.com/id/DIY-Capacitive-Stylus/ Speaking of full metal jacket I bet a clean bullet would work pretty well too. Find an old gutted 50 cal bullet and smooth the bullet head down to a nice round shape. Come on that would make for a great stylus you know you want to. :P
