My family co-owned an AMC dealership, with another family, from the Nash days, until the first Fuego arrived on the K.A.T. car carrier, at which time we exercised the buyout clause added during the "What'sa Matador" days. We became a Jeep dealership in 1964 after acquiring a local franchise from the family of a recently deceased owner - for the estimated value of the parts stock, and new vehicle inventory, plus a minimal fee for the business itself. Kaiser-Jeep really took pride in their 'toughness engineered into the design itself'. We sold the heck out of Jeepster Commandos, and things only got better after the AMC acquisition around 1969/1970. The good reputation earned early-on by the first two iterations of the Jeep Corporation, remained stable after Iacocca's purchase, the Daimler-Benz acquisition, and even on-through to the days of the 2008/2009 "Recessionpalooza". The 'Whitehouse-encouraged' buyout by Fiat/Sellantis, has obliterated a once stellar reputation. I sincerely hope that the next corporate owner at least trys to "right this behemoth of a wrong". Come to think of it, IMHO, with the exception of Toyota, every manufacturer of non-military 4WD vehicles produces crap, or just plain stinks!

Great job, Eric. I just can't believe how the automotive engineers have made such a mess of modern vehicles and turned a rather simple job into a nightmare where you have to tear half the vehicle apart to fix something. It makes me glad that I still drive the 1993 GMC truck that I bought new in 1993. I had to have the A/C repaired in it two years ago and they had to upgrade the system to R134 because in 1993 they used the R12. So it cost me a bit ($869) but it was worth it to me so that I didn't have to buy a new truck.

It reminds me of replacing the ever-dying cooling fan "relay" in my '99 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Either remove the entire grille, front bumper cover and all lights along with it _or_ take a Dremel to the plastic under the passenger headlight. Whoever did it last time (as I replaced a non-OEM relay) took the whole front of the car off. I did not. This most recent time I had my mechanic do it since I wasn't sure it was the problem and I bet they appreciated that hole...as will I in a year or two when it needs another.

I worked on mainly Bmw and Vw for my automotive career, and even though they were unnecessarily complicated, the fit and finish and build quality was top notch . They had different fasteners for every application, the threads would never stick passed the nut they would always be perfectly flush this would prevent rust and the bolt would always come out even in Rhode Island winters However over the years I noticed things like that slipping. Even they would cut cost and use more standard length bolts . Unfortunately durability and fixability have long gone away

People love to bash the quality of the Renegade, but I havent experienced it at all. My 2017 2wd Sport w/1.4t motor & 6spd has 98K miles & runs just as good as new. In 5+ years of very, very enthusiastic driving, mine has been a gem. Still cruisin on the original clutch. Have only done stabilizer links, spark plugs & a brake job to date. Oh, I did also recharge the AC system w/no issues. Vehicle has ample room, handles like a hot hatch, and scoots faster than most SUVs in its class. Plus, I average 28 mpg mixed on 89 octane fuel and I scored it brand new for $8000 off MSRP with rebates & incentives. Couldn't be happier. This vehicle has been just as reliable as my '02 IS300 so far. Regarding the plastic clips breaking, who cares? I always buy new clips when I pull panels cuz I usually end up breaking half of them regardless of the make of vehicle.

The problem with getting rid of that PIECE, she may get something worst and cost more too. As long as she knows the problems, she may want to keep what she knows rather than take a chance on something else. Example, I had a 1977 GMC Astro, a tractor ( semi) was running good and dependable, I traded it for a 2008 Kenworth (new) I had problems from the day I drove it off the lot and it got worse from there. I wound up selling it back to the dealer. Unfortunately I sold my GMC to a private party. So I bought a 2005 international 9400 I and had very good luck with it. I'm retired now so I don't much concern myself with big trucks anymore

I learned about these from Richard at the ProjectBinky channel as he zip-tied the entire automobile harness he built from scratch.

talking about plastic, GM using plastic everywhere on the cooling system really made my day. Had to replace the Tee for the dual climate system in mine, but low and behold, the plastic elbow on the hose coming from the front heater core started crumbling apart on my 03 5.3 GMC Envoy. Had to compromise and use JB Weld for plastic and glop it all around the fitting. Also, when I was changing the water pump, the plastic inlet on the radiator was also starting to crumble. wtf GM.

Plastic in the cooling system is idiotic. Plastic get brittle with heat cycles. Constantly going from ambient temperature to 220 F is tough on it. My BMW and Nissan both have had plastic cooling system fitting failures. Manufacturing cost is much less which is why they are used.

It's pretty sad that the AC only lasted five years before needing major repair. My fiancé's 2017 F150 had to have a new compressor installed last year because the clutch exploded coming back from a vacation trip. Only 32,000 miles on the truck and of course not under warranty. We tried getting Ford to goodwill the repair but no luck. We also had to take it to the dealer because not one independent shop we called was equipped to handle the 1234yf refrigerant and we called at least five of them.

Smoking (again, not the devil's lettuce) is an addictive hobby. I started smoking with a cheapo square Walmart charcoal grill and we've graduated to a full blown barrel smoker. My specialty is definitely pork shoulder but I make some good ribs of the back and spare varieties. I've only made two briskets because I don't have the patience for them. One of the local apple orchards used to sell apple wood chunks so I'd stock up every fall so I was ready come spring and summer.

When I looked at one of these Fiat Renegades the thing that stood out the most was that it was a poor excuse of a Kia Soul carbon copy. The Soul is one of the best wagon/hatchback in terms of utility and value, the FCA really put a lot of effort into creating a few models like the Renegade that mimic the Soul's attributes although they are in extremely bad taste. For a similar price you can get the Soul that will last a bit longer and have more vehicle options, and go just about the same distance as any Jeep Renegade with proper tires.

I had a brand new 1988 Ford aerostar. It was a really nice van especially on vacation with the kids. While it was still under warranty the front power window motor crapped out. No big deal I know Ford doesn't make those motors pretty sure they're already made in Mexico back then. So I take it to the dealer and they put a new motor in the door which is fine. And I look at the door and the door trim panel at the bottom, is sticking out about an inch and a quarter with a huge gap. I'm like oh hell no. So I went in and talked to the service guy on the drive and he gave me a Mumble and I said let me speak to your boss so I'll come the assistant service manager. And he tells me that's just the way it is and you're going to have to live with it. When he buys me a car to drive he can tell me what I'm going to live with. I was up in his face before he knew what the hell was going on. And I basically told him what I said above. Maybe a little more colorfully. Definitely loudly. About then the service manager who I haven't know at the time came out and he said Mr Rodrigues is there a problem? I showed them the door and I told him this stupid SOB says I have to live with bad workmanship and it's just the way it is. The service manager looks at his assistant and tells him to go to the parts department get the retaining clips to fix the door and to do it himself. He looks at me and says Mr Rodrigues would you like to come in and sit down for a cup of coffee while he's doing that. I said sure. So the assistant manager is out in the sun loosening that panel and replacing all the clips and putting it back on himself which is got him pretty pissed. Especially since he had a nice pressed white shirt on and tie. That was kind of a fun day dealing with that turkey! You work on my vehicle you better damn well put it back the way it was.

@@watershed44 the service manager and I had gone through a process together when I got this van. I had had an earlier 87 model. The 87 model year had a problem with head bolts. The head bolts were bought from Taiwan and they sent bolts that were the wrong tensile strength. It was a major scandal in the Auto industry and outsourcing of parts at the time. I don't know if you're familiar with the federal lemon law new vehicles but it's basically you take a vehicle in three times for the same problem if they don't fix it they have to replace your vehicle. Well I gave them more than ample time I took it in 10 times. I gave it to them another four times. And they gave me the van that had the problem with the window motor as the consequence under lemon law. So I had a pretty good understanding with the manager. I had two problems with the new van one was that motor. The other was the rear heater core. The hose clamps weren't tight enough and so they started leaking. I took it up to the dealer. And the mechanic came out and said there is no leak you must not know what the hell antifreeze looks like. Rest assured I know what preston looks like. The mechanic and I were having a discussion outside the manager's office. And he came out and asked me what the problem was. So I told him that his mechanic thinks I don't know what prestone looks like and my van has a heater core leak in the rear heater core. The service manager kind of rubbed his head like oh God not again. You see my first fan because of the soft metal of the head bolts, was burning antifreeze. They replace the bolts but didn't true the heads. If head bolts aren't torque down equally all the way around the head warps. So when they put the new bolts down the leak got worse. That is why they replaced my van. So obviously I was very familiar with Preston since I was putting it in my car for the past 7 months! He told mechanic to take the cover back off and to test my engine hot cold whatever and find the damn leak because if Mr Rodrigues said his van is leaking, it is leaking. Well the mechanic came out about 20 minutes later and said he found the leak and he apologized to me. So I figured not the 30 minutes so I have the covers back on and I can go home. The service manager came out and he asked me to come to his office. So I went in his office and he said we've had a bit of a problem. The mechanic scuffed your trim panel while he was working on your van. If you want I can order a new trim panel and I'll call you when it gets here or we can have a repair company come out and just fix it. He'll do it today and that'll be the end of it. I said let me see the damage. I walked out with the service manager in the mechanic was standing there and you could tell he was a little worried. I looked at the panel it wasn't really bad at all it was just a scuff. I looked at the mechanic I looked at the service manager and said go ahead and have that company come out and fix it and we'll call it a day. You could see a load was off that mechanic shoulders and the service manager to a degree. The company came out and I went and talked to the guy to ask him how he did it cuz I'm a curious person and he said I could watch if I wanted to and I said sure it's all watched him you know basically put some adhesive on it and iron it out with a piece of plastic or something in between the iron and the panel to restore the finish. He even had stuff that match the interior color of the van. So no one ever knew that was a problem. I was fine with it, I just wanted the damn leak gone. I had been a customer at that dealership for about 15 years or so and you get a feel for people. And the service manager was on the up and up. If I'd have thought he was running me around I would have definitely been in his face too. Matter of fact he drove my original van for week and reported to Ford motor company that the lake was indeed there and it was indeed worse. He had actually had to add coolant to the tank in order for the system not to get low. That's one ford surrendered and gave me a new van. I had him over a barrel because I had gone well beyond the three attempts to repair. I didn't even need to get an attorney involved.
